Review: Aloners
Aloners is a free otome game for PC/Mac/Linux by tumblr user sonnet009/ sonnet009games. Download the game here.
*Rated Mature by creator for explicit language and violence, non-explicit sexual content
Synopsis: With no memories and no explanation, you wake up to a post-apocalyptic world. You’re soon confronted by the only other person left alive. With harsh conditions and limited resources, survival becomes everything.
Characters: There’s only two main characters, the protagonist (which I’ll discuss in the Gameplay section) and Trash. Trash is…well he’s a lot of things. His main goal is survival, and he sticks to that. He’s a bit rough around the edges, and he doesn’t always know how to be gentle, but he does try. He has a tendency to be smug and/or sarcastic at times though. Despite only having the protagonist as a companion, he’s surprisingly closed off at times.
Gameplay: The protagonist doesn’t really have any set personality. It’s up to you as the player to shape her, and you can do that through a myriad of choices. Seriously, there are a lot of choices, and they do affect gameplay. Subtle changes appear even chapters later based on the choices you made. You really get the chance to make the character you want. You want to play a reserved, shy protagonist? Sure! You want to be snarky? Sassy? Sarcastic? The options are there for your choosing! This is the perfect game for those who like to self-insert.
Though Trash does have more of a set personality, his response to your protagonist is also shaped by the choices you make. He can respond jokingly or kindly or harshly depending on how you choose to play. And he will remember and mention your choices later too.
There are basically two endings. One is the bad ending, and the other is the good ending. However, based on your choices at certain points, the good ending has three variations. Though there are a lot of choices, not all of them necessarily affect what ending you get. A lot of choices merely shape your journey to the final chapter.
Writing: Aloners is a perfect mix of a unique story and excellent writing. It is poignant, tragic, hopeful, and thought provoking. The plot is more complicated than it appears at first, and the story veers into places and topics that you wouldn’t necessarily expect.
Even though there is only one love interest, Aloners is about getting to know someone under the harshest of conditions. Do you let them in, or do you keep them at a distance? And ultimately, can you both survive?
Art: I love Trash’s design! The clothes, the hair, the goggles, it all subtly complements his character. And though there aren’t many CGs, the ones you do get are beautiful. Also, the backgrounds and the GUI add to the dry and distressed feel of the game.
Music: Both the music and its use in the game are minimal. The music is minimal in that the textures and sounds are often thin as apposed to full and lush. Sometimes it even has this primal undercurrent that contributes to the tone of the game. And the use of music is minimal in that it’s not always present. When it’s absent, you feel the quietness, the isolation, of their situation. When it does appear, it’s entrance has impact. You know something is about to happen. You know the mood is about to change.
Final Thoughts: I had played the creator’s previous game Rei, so every since the announcement, I’ve really been looking forward to Aloners. I’ve seen so many suggestions from people wanting a game where you can really shape the MC and have your choices mean something. This game does just that.
I’m biased, but I truly think this game is a bit of a masterpiece. I know that the creator has put a lot of time and effort and heart into this game, and it resulted in something that is both different and thought provoking. The array of choices and how they affect gameplay will appeal to a lot of people, and the unique plot and love interest will attract readers interested in a good story.
In short, play this game!!!

Layout & Performance
Fsfsfsfsfsfsfsfsfsfsfsfsfs………. Let’s rock!
Modes
Something I’ve not mentioned so far is that StoryDevs has what I call ‘modes’. Modes determine what’s inside the columns, which columns are expanded by default, which order the columns should collapse in as the window narrows, and how wide each column should be.
Above you can see me switching between two modes: talent and asset. The gif demonstrates the different default columns that I’ve assigned the talent and asset modes. (It’s just an example — in reality the talent and asset modes both happen to expand only the left-most column by default).
Above is another example, this time demonstrating the different default widths columns might have for each mode. Again, the asset and talent modes would likely have the same widths in practice but for modes I add later this may be applicable.
Notice in the picture above that while we’re viewing the about page the right-most column is labelled “asset” — the mode is still active in the background. If you were to visit talent and then go to about it would be the talent mode that’s active in the background instead. This also applies in reverse: if you expand a column there’s still a page loaded in the background.
This might sound more complicated than it actually is. In a nutshell all it means is that the last thing you looked in the columns will still be in the columns. Likewise, when you collapse all the columns you’ll see the last thing that was there.
Performance
In those above gifs I’m switching between modes and the contents of the columns changes each time I do this. The first time you switch to a given mode you have to get that new content from www.storydevs.com — i.e., you get it from the server. You can’t just magic the data onto your computer instantly, you need to load it across an internet connection.
Communicating across a network with a server is slower than your computer accessing its hard drive, and network communication it only gets slower the further away the server is. Incidentally, I’m in Australia but the server I’m renting is in a data center in San Francisco!
So then, it’s preferable to avoid communicating over a network. How can we do this less often? Well, if the user switches from the talent mode to the asset mode and then back to the talent mode again, we’re downloading the talent mode twice. We can prevent this by just downloading it once and storing it on the users’ computer:
The pic above is a little confusing because the keys are in alphabetical order, but under keys you can see two things:
- the names of modes and pages (e.g., “about”, “assets”, “home”, “talent”)
- the names of columns that end with a mode’s name (e.g., “search_talent”, “browse_asset”, etc.)
When you switch modes the site carries out the following steps:
- If you’re trying to visit the same mode that you’re already in (i.e., you’re in the talent database, and you click “talent”) it will just set the columns to their default positions and stop here.
- If you’re trying to actually change modes, let’s say from talent to assets, it will get the name of the current mode, “talent”, and store it on your computer with the value “true”. When the site does this it’s making a note to itself saying, “I’ve already got a copy of the talent mode”.
- Next, it removes the contents of each column and stores it on your computer, giving it the name of the column plus the mode. For example, it stores the talent mode’s search column under the name “search_talent”. See the entries in the image above that begin “<div class=“col_inner”><sty…”? That’s the code for the column’s contents.
- Now that the columns are emptied and their contents’ are stored on your computer it’ll check to see if the new mode is stored on your computer. So in this example it’ll look for an “assets” entry. If there is one, it’ll load search_assets, browse_assets, and detail_assets into their respective columns.
- If it can’t find the mode saved on your computer it’ll ask the server for a copy.
There’s other concerns, such as making sure the data saved on a user’s computer is up-to-date, being conscious of security (e.g., XSS, accidentally saving private data, etc.), but this is the gist of it. And of course knowing what a mode is won’t be necessary to use the site — it’s just a technical detail.
First Video Update Has Been Re-Uploaded
The video I shared in the previous post had some artifacts in the video and the audio was kinda quiet so I’ve fixed those and re-uploaded it here. I’ve also updated the post it was in with the new version but I’m pretty sure that won’t affect reblogs… which is annoying but oh well.
I won’t do a video update with every post since I kind of forgot you have to edit, render, and upload video — not just record it! Watching it again, I can also see that I should’ve had a list of things to cover rather than just winging it. Lastly, it’d be nice to have a proper intro / outro section but I’m too busy to make it right now.
Couple of quick reminders: firstly, I’m speaking at VNconf on the 14th of January! Second, the recent updates I’ve been sharing are from a local version of the site I have on my computer. I’ve left the IM and gamepad demos on the beta version of the site for now which means it’s pretty out-of-date at the moment. I’m really hoping to have something solid & presentable ready for VNconf but I don’t know if that’s realistic given how much work is left for the re-write.

You are suddenly engulfed by a blinding light and lose conscious. When you wake up, you find that the scenery has changed into that of a video game fantasy world. As you are overwhelmed by the sudden twist of events, you learn a terrible truth: to escape this deadly world, you must clear the game.“
Bad Apple Wars

They’re all part of an organization composed of former police officers and have taken it upon themselves to investigate the brutal cases.
Without knowing whether she should trust these men or not, she suddenly came to hold the key to the massive case. In order to remove the collar that places her at the edge of death and to liberate Shinjuku from the malice that binds it, she cooperates and begins to investigate the incidents with the men.”
Potential Write-In Petition?
Many of us heard about the potential of SSL being localized in the USA. I had a successful write-in campaign for Tiger & Bunny: The Rising to be released in theaters a month after the Japanese release. We presented the collection of petitions directly to Viz at NYCC. I would have to keep it to the USA and Canada for collection. It would also be exclusive to Hakuouki titles. It would be a single piece of paper with selections to mark as well as a place to make your comments. Would others be interested? There are multiple online petitions but honestly many publishers ignore those.
Spread the word, and do it for them <3
Aksys Games is trying to localize Hakuouki: Sweet School Life for PS Vita, the publisher said during its Anime Expo 2016 panel.
Nothing is confirmed as of yet. The PS Vita otome game first launched in Japan in March 2014.
So, I recently released this rather mawkish VN: Round the Mulberry Bush. A kinetic (choice-less) VN set in the late 18th century, about an impossible ‘romance’ between a young Lady and a stableboy. Watch as their relationship falls apart over the course of seven long, lazy summers. You can download it for windows/max/linux here.
Vixen Games’ OZMAFIA!! Giveaway~!
So ya’ll may have heard that OZMAFIA!! is being released on Steam in English. How exciting is that?? Yay localization. And while I’m not entirely convinced this game isn’t about the Australian mafia (which would be such a good game holy crap), we’re I’m gonna give a copy away because HECK YES OTOME LOCALIZATION (also Poni-Pachet is still a new independent group in Japan and they deserve the moolah).
Prizes: A steam copy of OZMAFIA!!
Rules:
- To enter, Like and/or Reblog this post.
- You don’t have to follow/be following us (but we are pretty rad so maybe do it anyway?)
- You must have a Steam account or create one to receive the game.
- Secretly agree with me that a game about the Australian mafia would be tops
(like, what would the Oz Mafia even do? Organised Bottle-o robberies? Crazy pot rings in West End? Bribe our already ridiculous politicians? We are not an organized crime kind of country. We’re not an organised ANYTHING kind of country)
Winners: Winner will be chosen by a random generator. The Winners will have 48 hours to respond or another winner will be chosen (:
Winners will be chosen when the game is released on Steam (29th of April at this point), give or take a few hours because of Australia’s quirky timezone.
May the odds be ever in your favour and all that jazz.
Have some pretty art to get you in the mood:
Final reblog before this game is released!
*dies*
Alright, for those of you who aren’t following @teaforthreestudios on Facebook/their website, this was announced a few days ago.
Too lazy to click on that link/read the whole article? Allow me:
On this monumental day, I’m thrilled to announce our next project: a Shakespearean game for iOS (and possibly Android) entitled Shax.
Excuse me while I go die of happiness. As some of you (any of you that have spoken to me) may know, I regard Regency Love as the crown jewel of iOS VNs, so I can’t even describe how excited I am for this new project. In the post, Samantha from Tea For Three goes on to say that Shax aims be “funfunfun rather than ‘educational’” and excepted release date, at this stage, will be around 2016/2017.
And if all that wasn’t enough:
yes, the Lord Sutton novel is being written, slowly and surely
Just bury me.
Everyone please get as super-excited for this new project as I am. I have the upmost faith that this new game will be amazing, like everything else these girls make. You can follow Jenny, Melody and Samantha here on Tumblr, Facebook and their website :)
