Richey Beckett is an illustrator based in South Wales, UK. Working predominantly in pen and ink, he has gained recognition for his intricately detailed record covers, movie posters, and screen printed artwork. Beckett uses traditional pen and ink methods to create lavishly detailed pieces of black and white illustration. Taking influence from historic biblical, literary and natural history illustrators and engravers such as Doré, Durer, Audubon and Bewick, along with the decorative flair of Art Nouveau, he creates his own organic world which expands with each new piece. Clients include:
Metallica, Grateful Dead, Mastodon, Converge, Kvelertak, Baroness, Unearth, Trash Talk, New Found Glory, Sick Of It All, Mondo (Game Of Thrones/Lord Of The Rings/Army Of Darkness), All City Media (It Follows), Hero Complex Gallery/AMC (The Walking Dead), Silva Screen Records (The Wicker Man), New Republic Magazine, The British Film Institute.

My Grandfather is a story teller.

From my earliest memory of him, I can feel the knit of his argyle jumper and the slump of his well worn sunken chair in which many stories were told.

His most recent story was of himself.

Much younger and living the life, he drove down from the UK to Monaco. Dressed to impress, shirt and tie and all, he parked his car outside of the casino. As he made his way towards, he noticed a brand new car right outside of the entrance with a banner saying “Jackpot & £2,000 in Cash.”  With £20 in his pocket (which was a lot in those days) Took a deep breath and walked straight in.

He headed straight for the One Armed Bandit, which was the machine that if you hit the Jackpot with, you win the car and the cash. After playing steadily, he started to win some and lose some and eventually as the saying goes “The House Always Wins.” He’d spent his £20 and was out of pocket and like all sore losers, mutters and swears under his breath and began to leave the machine. As he does, another gentleman walks over towards him, passes by him and stands at the machine next to the one he’d been playing on. The guy puts in his money… and instantly hits the jackpot. Lights flashing everywhere, he’d won the cash and the car.

Vividly saying to me that if he’d gone to just to the machine next to him, he’d have been sorted.

On the side he told me that back in the day he found out a way to empty the  one armed bandits at his local pubs. That if you pulled down the arm and held it long enough in a certain position the machine would instantly just drop all of it’s cash. Needless to say he earned his reputation.

This was the last story my Grandfather told me before he passed away recently. He wasn’t an easy man to get along with by many accounts and raised hell when he couldn’t get his backy, stuck his fingers up at passing by bewildered nurses.. However for me, he was a story teller and a fucking good one at that. He may of not won that jackpot, though I know full well that I hit the Jackpot for having him as a Grandfather.

So here’s to the story tellers and loved ones.

Up yours.

vogue

Do you remember a world before Beyoncé? The singer has been in our hearts and headphones for more than 20 years, from teenager to mother of three. The Queen graces Vogue’s September issue this year, sharing the story of her latest pregnancy and delivery, her thoughts on body acceptance and the influence of her ancestry, and the legacy she hopes to leave her children. Beyoncé’s fourth Vogue cover is also historic: It was shot by 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell, a rising young black photographer from Atlanta, hand-selected by the star.
