Frozen Observations

@virtual-winter

30-something, he/him. I think too much about Frozen. Analyst, mapmaker, infrastructure engineer. Arendelle-content and trips down memory lane! Banner: photo of Nærøyfjord by me!

“What happened to Hans??” Boy they better return him

So, the QUESTIONS:

  • Who gave Elsa her powers? - Um, it's WASN'T Ahtohallan???
  • Why doesn't Anna have powers? - Because the character she's based on doesn't have powers, but I guess they need to come up with a different reason
  • Was there a 5th Spirit before? - I sure think so! It would be odd to have legends about it otherwise!
  • What kind of Queen will Anna be? - Hopefully the Queen Arendelle needs her to be!
  • Will Kristoff be King? - Well, actually, he would be Prince consort This is a Disney movie so of course he will be!
  • Do they want kids? - The Royal Council definitely wants them to because the only alternative is Olaf
  • Where are Kristoff's parents? - Darn good question!
  • How did Kristoff meet Sven? - Read "The hero within" and "The fixer upper" and find out!
  • How can Sven be so old and still so virile? - An actual real-life question that I'm very interested in how they answer!
  • Why is Olaf alive? - Is this a very polite way of asking why the darn snowman isn't dead yet?
  • What about Marshmallow and the Snowgies? - What about the post-credits scene in Frozen II?
  • Is it "Hoo Hoo" or is it "You Hoo"? - Asking the big questions of life, the universe and everything... TBF i read the script, it's "Hoo hoo"
  • Why is Elsa's powers still growing? - She needs to level up more before the final boss
  • Why are there castle ruins throughout Ahtohallan? - I'm genuinely excited about what they do with this because I've wondered the same thing. They look like Elsa's own architecture but obviously not made by her. A previous 5th spirit who settled there long ago?
  • Where do the nature spirits come from? - "Dangerous secrets" says Ahtohallan is their mother but IDK
  • Do we still need to beware the Frozen Heart? - Leading question, OF COURSE we do!
  • Who is the Frozen Heart? - I... don't understand this question at all
  • What happened to Hans? - Even though you put this at the end I'm sensing shenanigans

Questions that COULD have been asked but weren't:

  • WiLl ElSa GeT a LoVe InTeReSt???
  • What about the Northuldra?
  • What does Elsa ACTUALLY do in the forest all day besides babysitting the spirits?
  • What year does Frozen take place in?
  • Why on Earth doesn't anyone have a gun?
  • Are Agduna still alive?
  • Why does the castle have 8000 salad plates?
  • Who the heck is SAMANTHA?

Frohana Birthday Parties! 🎂

The birthday parties were always one of my favorite plots from the storybooks. I'm glad all of them got one!

Olaf, of course, had a summer party! After many "failed" attempts, that is. You know how animes have a mandatory "beach episode"? I guess this is Frozen's version of that 🤭 (Well, depending on which storybook you read...)

This story also had some of my most favorite illustrations of the Frohana too! It's always a treat to see them decorated with flowers.

"It's my birthday?" Olaf grinned, "That must be why it's been the best day ever!" Aaaw 🥹

It was also very sweet to see the kinds gifts the Frohana planned to give Sven. I like it when Olaf uses the snowflakes from his flurry as a plot device. R.I.P. Olaf's flurry. Of course, Sven gets a... carrot cake! 😆

For young Kristoff, he got to celebrate his first "human" birthday party with the Trolls! He says he's never been to one, so they wanted to "surprise" him (with his knowledge lol). Little Kristoff saying he doesn't know when his real birthday is because he doesn't have a family to keep track of it was... 🥺

Elsa's was very interesting. She already knew Anna would be planning for her (because it takes one to know one! And also 'cause the Frohana wasnt very discreet either). So, like the introvert that she is, she sort of "dreaded" the party all day as she finished her daily royal duties. She thought they had planned a huge party with a reindeer-sized cake and invited five hundred guests (her words, not mine!) To her surprise, they threw a "quiet little party with family and friends"—exactly what Elsa wanted! 😁

Little Anna's was my favorite! It was also nice seeing a young Anna with messy bed hair too. Some things never change. Come to think of it, her birthday is the probably one of the most celebrated events in the storybooks. I think there's also another birthday of hers where Elsa creates a winter wonderland in the castle? Correct me if I'm wrong 😅 Not to mention, Frozen Fever.

Important guests from neighboring kingdoms were invited, so Anna acted as formal and as proper as she could to please her parents. Every single time she thought she messed up, Agnarr and Iduna played along to reassure her it's okay 🥹

That night, Elsa, of course, showed her what a "real party" looked like without the pressure of acting formal! ♡

No Hug Goodbye

It's obvious rewatching these scenes now that that's what they meant, but I never really picked up on the real reason why they showed Elsa curtseying to her parents here before...

...whilst Anna pulls them into a hug.

At first, I thought it was just another one of those comparison scenes where they emphasize Anna and Elsa's differences— in this case, Elsa being more "reserved" than Anna. It very well could be, but it was probably also because Elsa didn't want to touch them or be touched (by anyone) so as to not hurt them. We know her last scene before this was when she was 12 saying, "No, don't touch me! Please, I don't want to hurt you." when Agnarr tries to hug little Elsa to calm her down.

Given that... Elsa's probably never gotten a hug in YEARS 🥺

If that were true, that means her embrace with Anna after she thaws back was her first hug in forever!

...buuuuut luckily, the Junior Novel (adapted by Sarah Nathan and Sela Roman) and Dangerous Secrets by Mari Mancusi mention that they did hug their parents goodbye (or more specifically Iduna hugged her), so thank goodness for that 😅

A perfect night by Mari Mancusi - 3 year(ish) anniversary!

Oops! Looks like I had a slight calendar-malfunction 😆

The Agduna (Agnarr x Iduna) centered short story "A perfect night" was released for free by Mari on February 10th, 2021 on nerdist.com and this was the 1-year-anniversary edition I put together in 2022!

Some of the illustrations/screencaps were provided by the fantastic @shade74
