Since nobody is talking about the existential threat to the climate and the environment a second Trump term/Republican government control will cause, which to me supersedes literally every other issue, I wanted to just say my two cents, and some things you can do to help. I am a conservation biologist, whose field was hit substantially by the first Trump presidency. I study wild bees, birds, and plants.
In case anyone forgot what he did last time, he gagged scientists' ability to talk about climate change, he tried zeroing budgets for agencies like the NOAA, he attempted to gut protections in the Endangered Species Act (mainly by redefining 'take' in a way that would allow corporations to destroy habitat of imperiled species with no ramifications), he tried to do the same for the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (the law that offers official protection for native non-game birds), he sought to expand oil and coal extraction from federal protected lands, he shrunk the size of multiple national preserves, HE PULLED US OUT OF THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT, and more.
We are at a crucial tipping point in being able to slow the pace of climate change, where we decide what emissions scenario we will operate at, with existential consequences for both the environment and people. We are also in the middle of the Sixth Mass Extinction, with the rate of species extinctions far surpassing background rates due completely to human actions. What we do now will determine the fate of the environment for hundreds or thousands of years - from our ability to grow key food crops (goodbye corn belt! I hated you anyway but), to the pressure on coastal communities that will face the brunt of sea level rise and intensifying extreme weather events, to desertification, ocean acidification, wildfires, melting permafrost (yay, outbreaks of deadly frozen viruses!), and a breaking down of ecosystems and ecosystem services due to continued habitat loss and species declines, especially insect declines. The fact that the environment is clearly a low priority issue despite the very real existential threat to so many people, is beyond my ability to understand. I do partly blame the public education system for offering no mandatory environmental science curriculum or any at all in most places. What it means is that it will take the support of everyone who does care to make any amount of difference in this steeply uphill battle.
There are not enough environmental scientists to solve these issues, not if public support is not on our side and the majority of the general public is either uninformed or actively hostile towards climate science (or any conservation science).

I've been messaging with a 17yo kid from Gaza, named Nader.
When I asked what he wanted people to know about his family's situation, he immediately answered "the bitter cold".

Can you imagine being in this situation? Made homeless where the stores are no longer getting consistent deliveries and might be bombed, the government is barely operating cuz it keeps getting bombed, there's not even charity getting into your besieged area, and most people's jobs—including your big brother's—have been bombed beyond repair?
Where it's getting so cold and you CAN'T get warm because you're relying on strangers to help you get that coat or blanket, or bc you need the little money that trickles in to just survive??
And can you imagine living this way for OVER A YEAR as a normal teenager who has a little brother and a baby niece with malnutrition to stress about too?
I know people are tired of hearing about Gaza. It's upsetting that this genocide has continued so long with so few powerful people even trying to stop it. But we have a responsibility to our fellow humans, to help them survive persecution.

The yearly amount for all Swim On zines has been donated! We did so well this year! Thank you for your help with shark conservation. This year we made $941.00 All proceeds were donated to finfree.org, which is listed as the Rob Stewart Sharkwater Foundation. Swim On donations are sent out on a yearly basis every September 30th. I take care of all the fees that stripe takes myself, so Finfree gets the full amount. We made a whopping $941.00!!! The most we’ve EVER made! Thank you all for your support in this last volume, what an incredible journey. I’ll keep annually donating whatever we get even if I don’t make another zine (but who knows, maybe I’ll come back to it if I have more time down the road). All Swim On zines are still available for purchase!

It‘s scary to see how very important european petitions get no visibility whatsoever. We had a basic income petition last year which failed because not enough people knew about it. Now we have a „tax the rich“ one that only lasts until october this year and only has around 250k out of 1 mio. signings.
Most EU people go through their every day life w/o knowing about them. There are no ads, no marketing…nothing. I know that costs money though one might think important petitions that lead to a better and progressive life would be supported by the government or ministries in some way, but nooooo
And why should they? It’s petitions that would help out the poor and middle class, but endanger capitalism and their exploitation, sooo: government and business leads for example.

The petition has to reach not only 1 million statements of support, but also a minimum threshold of support in at least 7 EU states. If you have citizenship for an EU country other than Germany and France, your country has yet to meet the minimum threshold for this petition.

Hey, I'm really sorry to have to do this but I'm having a really difficult time recovering both financially and nervous-system-wise from a hellish few years of abuse and mounting health problems and I'm just... not ok. Very basic self-care like being able to unclutter my home or even go outside to get some sun has fallen by the wayside as I struggle to catch up on a chronically backlogged commission queue while paying off a literal mountain of debt in the high tens of thousands and being continually derailed by illness flares. I'm trying to put more attention into my shop but it's so early on and I'm still working through so much debt from illness that it's not able to fill the gaps I had hoped right off the bat. I hit an absolute wall the other day, completely shut down, and realized I can't keep going without help. More details are in the link, I'd really appreciate shares or even just reading. Thank you so much to everyone who's helped so far ;;
