Someone just liked this in my notes so I’m gonna reblog it again. My relationship with Butch and Sundance is that they were referenced in Justified, in my favorite episode ever, and the relationship between Raylan and Boyd is hella gay, so I watched this movie because of that. Following the gay breadcrumbs as you do. Like trusted this mainstream media to be making a gay reference and it was! Recently I saw a video being passed around where Timothy Olyphant admits how very homosexual (his words) Raylan and Boyd’s relationship was from their first encounter and it made me feel very validated.

I haven’t watched the new season of OFMD yet but I just have to say I cannot BELIEVE that I had to find out from Reddit that Balki Bartokomous was in it, you guys are slacking

So, I feel like I’m losing my mind. I keep seeing metas about how Aziraphale wants Crowley to return to Heaven and be an angel again because he wants them to be on the same side/be good/change/etc., etc., etc. but I don’t see that at all. I actually see it as the very opposite.

Aziraphale loves Crowley just as he is. But there’s something more. Something huge.

Avatar

And another thing, that I haven’t seen anyone else talking about (and sadly don’t really have anything intelligent to say about myself) it’s interesting to me that in the flashback part of Ep 3 Crowley is both attempting to and succeeding as passing for Scottish…he’s doing the accent.. while Aziraphale gets called out on being English immediately. He can’t fake a Scottish accent? It’s giving shades of when he was arrested in France because he couldn’t not dress like an aristocrat for 5 minutes. He can speak every language but he can’t do an accent?

I know there’s context I’m missing as the Scots and the English haven’t always been on good terms but as an American I don’t know the actual history of that (which is probably relevant to this situation). On the other hand it’s just interesting to me that Crowley can pass as who he’s pretending to be and Aziraphale either can’t, or doesn’t want to.

in the scene where the zombies hear that man singing, greta is saying “i suppose that’s dinner” right ? 😭😭 because the subtitles said something about oxygen and i had to rewind

Oh dear god. I think the exact line is "Well... I suppose that's dinner".

It's embarrassing. Sorry.

embarrassing for amazon, not for neil. amazon has access to the finished scripts, with all the words right there. amazon has the money to pay the writers and actors a living wage, so neil could have been participating in the rest of the finishing process. this egg is all over amazon's face.

I’m honestly wondering at this point if Amazon used some sort of AI to to make these captions, without any human oversight. Voice to text is a thing, right? Sounds like something Amazon would do. It would get them out of paying somebody.

So what I’m thinking now is, what if Aziraphale asks Crowley back into Heaven not just because he thinks Crowley would be happy to be accepted by Heaven and be an angel again, but because he thinks Heaven- with which he’s had a shitty and contentious experience, let’s be real, and which he’s actively wanting to change- would be made better by having Crowley there. He wouldn’t agree to do it by himself not just because he would miss Crowley but also he wouldn’t think he could be the change needed all by himself.

Like it isn’t just a savior complex it’s a “don’t you see how awesome you and me would be together and how much you could help.” He’s actively choosing Crowley as someone he does think Is better than Heaven. (Which is sort of what Crowley has been trying to show him this whole time about how messed up Heaven’s morals are!! The Book of Job! Aziraphale has taken this lesson to heart!!) so it would be pointless to try and change Heaven on his own but Crowley has been his guide to morality (even if he won’t admit it) and he honesty thinks they could make heaven better. TOGETHER. I think Crowley would have rejected returning to heaven either way but it would have looked very different if he had understood where Aziraphale was coming from.

I think I have a potentially controversial opinion on Aziraphale and the ending.

No but I think you’re absolutely right. There’s a reason we see sweet happy baby Crowley at the very beginning, and importantly, see that Aziraphale sees him. I am dead certain that’s what he’s thinking of every time he brings up Crowley being an angel. I’ll bet a limb that that’s what he wants to give back to Crowley. As I said elsewhere - he can’t possibly give that back, it’s been taken forever, and we know that, but I sure can’t blame Aziraphale for trying.

Yes I this this is a big part of how Aziraphale is thinking.

I do wonder if Aziraphale remembers this interaction but Crowley does not and maybe does not even realise that they met then (as he doesn’t remember saraquel or furfur). It would make the disconnect between them over this all the harder to transverse.

Addition—

And that joyful innocent exhilaration at the world? That thing Crowley has lost? Aziraphale has it himself. He somehow still has it himself. It is part of why Crowley is so drawn to him. And he has it not about Heaven, but about Earth.

Angel Crowley’s excited joy at a nebula and Aziraphale’s excited joy at magic and books and dancing and pears. Same thing.

Aziraphale doesn’t have to return Crowley to his previous state, he needs to be Crowley’s other half and make him whole. Crowley finds it again by being with Aziraphale.

Exactly! Aziraphale believes it’s the Fall and being a demon that stole that joy, because he didn’t lose it. And that’s (as far as he can see) the main difference between them.

It’s a bit more complicated than that, of course; Crowley wasn’t just disillusioned by the Fall, but also by God’s callous cruelty and indifference. He’d have never remained as happy as he was then, just because of who he is and how he questions and overthinks everything. But to Aziraphale, it seems simple. Crowley used to feel true joy, then he fell, and now he doesn’t. Aziraphale didn’t fall and he can still feel like that. So maybe, just maybe, letting him be an angel again would give that back to him.

(That’s leaving out all the non-Crowley reasons, because as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, they DO have motivations besides each other. Aziraphale believes he has to act here. If he can make a difference, he has to take the chance. Just as Crowley has to question everything - it’s in their respective natures.)

Yes, and to expand on that: because he, Aziraphale, is SO terrified of Falling, of losing his angelic nature, because being an angel is still the ultimate measure of doing (not being, doing) good in his mind, and doing good is central to his very existence, he can't fathom what he'd do if that were to ever be taken from him, what he could possibly want back more. And because Crowley has shown time and again how much good he's capable of doing, Aziraphale can't fathom there's possibly something Crowley would want more.

Avatar

Honestly though if Aziraphale really thought Crowley would be as stoked about returning to Heaven as he seems to think he ought to be he would never have been this shaking and nervous in his delivery of the “good” news in the first place. Is this his love confession? Within the rules he’s allowed? Choose me, stay by my side forever? And Crowley responds with the kiss… with I want you in ways that Heaven is Not ok with and I won’t compromise that…

Avatar

Ok but we’re all in agreement when Gabriel says he thought he’d feel better around one particular person and asks if Aziraphale feels the same and Aziraphale gets frightened and gets up and backs out of the chair and frantically denies it’s because he thought for that moment that Gabriel was faking his amnesia and being the first wave of heaven coming after him for his friendship with Crowley? Right?

Hey so you know how House MD was based on Sherlock Holmes, right?

This has most likely been pointed out before but I just found some pictures from the last time I watched House and I just can’t stop thinking about this —

Patient: You really as good as everyone seems to think you are?

House: Are you really as miserable as everyone seems to think you are?

Patient: I just want to do something that matters.

House: Nothing matters. We’re all just cockroaches, wildebeests dying on the river bank. Nothing we do has any lasting meaning.

Patient: And you think I’m miserable.

House: If you’re unhappy on the plane, jump out of it.

Patient: I want to but… I can’t.

House: Mmm. That’s the problem with metaphors. They need interpretation. Jumping out of the plane is stupid.

Patient: Well, what if I’m not in a plane? What if I’m just in a place I don’t want to be?

House: That’s the other problem with metaphors. Yes, what if you’re actually on an ice cream truck and outside are candy and flowers and virgins. You’re on a plane! We’re all on planes. Life is dangerous and complicated and… it’s a long way down.

Patient: So you’re afraid of change?

House: No, you’re afraid to change. You’d rather imagine that you can escape instead of actually try. ‘Cause if you fail, then you got nothing. So you’ll give up the chance of something real so you can hold onto hope. The thing is, hope is for sissies.

— Season 4 Episode 14, “Living the Dream” (aired 08 May 2008)

So I’m sure you know where I’m going with this…

“Look how brilliant you are. Your mind has created the perfect metaphor. You’re high above us, all alone in the sky, and you understand everything except how to land.”

So House says you need to find the courage to let go of “hope” (spending your life in daydreams that won’t come true if you don’t do something to make them happen), JUMP out of the plane (do the risky thing) in order to be more happy with your life… but holding onto hope and possibility of something better is preferable to the reality of failing and crashing to the ground.

Because after all,

It’s not the fall that kills you… it’s the landing.

Being gay isn’t dangerous. It’s other people’s treatment of you that is.

Loving someone isn’t scary, it’s the possibility that they won’t love you back.

But you’ll never find out how happy you could be if you don’t make that jump.

Oh and the next two episodes are called “House’s Head” and “Wilson’s Heart” and have House having all kinds of medical and memory issues, buried memory retrieval, hallucinations, talking to himself through other characters in his mind, shadowy lights to visualize being inside his mind, mystery woman with a false identity his mind creates who represents Wilson’s girlfriend, “I’m the answer”, “you believe in reason above all else, there must be a reason”, overdosing on drugs to solve the mystery, playing out scenarios completely in his mind, almost dying himself, Wilson restarting House’s heart after it stops (heart restarting a heart anyone?), House saying Wilson’s girlfriend’s name as soon as he wakes up after coming back from almost dying, hallucinating Wilson’s girlfriend in a pantsuit and having conversations with her as though she’s there, and then of course Wilson’s girlfriend dying and Wilson blaming House (since he called and she came to meet him), Wilson isolating himself from House, House keeping his distance, and then trying to guilt Wilson into being his friend again…

And here’s an interesting coincidence with the opening scenes from House’s Head and The Final Problem…

Yeah this haunts me.

Hmm - interesting!

Going absolutely feral over interview with the vampire right now. Yes, the gay is surface-level, which is great, but it’s also responding to the earlier text which was only subtext, but obvious subtext- and to see it pulled forward and made explicit is just-

Like I feel like Louis is saying “I told you the story, but I didn’t tell it correctly.” He’s already DONE the interview, now we’re getting the uncensored version. He’s outing himself and the original narrative as unreliable. I have brainworms. Also am I the only one who has read The Feast of All Saints? Anne Rice’s gay interracial romance set in New Orleans? I mean I think it was a tragedy but the gay element was there. It’s been a very long time since I last read that but I do feel it influenced what’s happening here in a way that I would love to sink my teeth into. Where are my meta writers?

When he says “that was the last sunrise that I ever saw” I can remember exactly how Brad Pitt said that but it never gave me chills like this does. I’m already seeing so much more of who he really is and care about him so much more as a character.

Amber Heard was a victim of domestic violence. She has been purposefully targeted and humiliated in front of the whole world by her abuser, who has used his fame and celebrity to weaponise the culture against her. As someone who has lived through domestic abuse in my home, I stand with Amber Heard today and all victims of domestic abuse who have had to put up with the heartbreak of seeing their abuser get away with it. And Amber has had to do so with the whole world watching and the whole world seemingly wanting her abuser to be exonerated and paint her as the aggressor. I am sad today. Amber Heard deserves better. Survivors of domestic abuse deserve better. Women deserve better. If you don't like or disagree with this statement, unfollow.
