Nebraska hasn't passed a single bill this year because one lawmaker keeps filibustering in protest of an anti-trans bill: 'I will burn this session to the ground'

Damn. I thought she was just gonna up and make a fuss and her swearing to protect trans kids was a bunch of empty words (again).

But no. She's one-woman filibustering the entire Nebraska legislature into a complete standstill until they agree to protect the rights of trans kids.

She was 100% serious when she said she'd make it as painful for everyone as it is for trans kids. Gahddamn.

This is why small elections matter. She's not a country wide senator or president or shit. She's just a local official representing District 6 in Nebraska.

This is why the "smaller" elections between the presidential elections matter.

HEY GUYS!!

GUYS!!!

FRANCE HAS REACHED THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SIGNATURES ON THE CITIZEN'S INITIATIVE AGAINST CONVERSION THERAPY IN THE EU!!

ONE COUNTRY DOWN, SIX TO GO!!

We also need still quite a few signatures in order to reach the one million required.

As to date, the six other countries with the most signatures are:

  • Spain - 38.72%
  • Finland - 30.31%
  • Ireland - 24.86%
  • Netherlands - 24.15%
  • Germany - 23.54%
  • Belgium - 23.09%

So yeah, still a long way to go, but we ARE slowly getting closer. Don't stop now! Don't let this stay within the community, either, if you have any friends or family who are open to queer rights, get them to sign, too!

hey um queer desi people if you think you're alone, i promise you're not. i'm here, we're here, and we exist. i love you.

you've also not been "brainwashed by the West" or whatever bullshit I've heard over and over. queer people have existed in the Indian subcontinent and its neighbours for as long as humans have. you're not something Other and you don't deserve to be alienated from the aspects of your culture that you love. you have as much right to your history as anyone else.

you are free to reject it or choose not to associate with it for various reasons, of course, but you make that choice. they don't get to make it for you.

so yeah.

you're so valid, and so loved.

yeah please reblog/share this even if you're not desi or queer, because i need it to find as many of them as possible, because it's so, so easy for us to forget that we do have a community and that we aren't alone.

our cultures are generally extremely social, with large families and communities for every single tiny thing, and that's how we were raised. to feel alienated, and to feel alone, is a horrifying feeling for anyone, but it's so different when you grow up in a society where everyone else has so much security and support and belongs. because then you start to wonder if you're the one who's wrong, whether there really is no one else like you, because everyone seems to have a community except for you.

so yes. please share this. i want us to know, that we aren't fucking alone. and we deserve that sense of community just as much as anyone else.

In some positive news, the British medical association has passed a resolution against the implementation of the Cass Review, calling it “unsubstantiated.”

puc-puggy

oh holy shit this is GOOD good news.

The largest doctors' union in the United Kingdom... The British Medical Association (BMA) is an independent union representing 151,000 doctors in the United Kingdom. The group negotiates on behalf of all doctors in the UK and lobbies for best practices in medicine to the UK Parliament. The organization states that it “regularly represents the views of doctors and their patients in Parliament” and is also responsible for briefing other medical workers and members of parliament.

there are only about 215,000 doctors in the UK total. this is a keystone stakeholder group. this is a group so embedded into the function of the system that their support (or at least lack of defiance) is fundamentally necessary to enact and enforce the goal. it is very very very hard to accomplish a goal that keystone stakeholders oppose.

so what's happened is the parliament said "we will make a law about medical care" and 70% of doctors in the country said "lol good luck we know more than you and will not listen." and they're unionized. the uk jeapordizes a LOT more than just trans healthcare by fighting with their largest MD union. if the parliament proceeds with criminalizing medical care the union supports and attempts to actually enforce that criminalization, they run the very real risk of throwing their own medical infrastructure into abject chaos if 70% of their practitioners are directed by the union to begin labor disruption. BMA is fully aware of their influence here

AND THEY ARE NOT FEELING SHY ABOUT IT

This meeting recognises that the provision of gender identity services in the United Kingdom is inadequate, and that transgender people should be treated with compassion and respect for their bodily autonomy. Following the publication of the Cass Review on Gender Identity Services for children and young people, this meeting is concerned about its impact on transgender healthcare provision because of its unsubstantiated recommendations driven by unexplained study protocol deviations, ambiguous eligibility criteria, and exclusion of trans-affirming evidence. Therefore, this meeting calls on the BMA to: i. Publicly critique the Cass Review;   ii. Lobby and work with other relevant organisations and stakeholders to oppose the implementation of the recommendations made by the Cass Review;   iii. Lobby the Government and NHS in all four nations to ensure continuity in provision of transgender healthcare for patients younger than 18 years old;   iv. Lobby the Government and NHS in all four nations to ensure continuity in provision of transgender healthcare for patients aged 18 or older;   v. Publicly state support for transgender people, particularly transgender youth, and provision of prompt access to gender identity services and treatment at all ages; vi. Condemn the increasing political transphobia which is ostracising transgender people and discriminating against them by blocking their access to healthcare’ “The task and finish group will make recommendations to improve the healthcare system that has, for too long, failed transgender patients. It will work with patients to ensure the evaluation invokes the old adage in medicine of ‘no decision about me without me’. It is time that we truly listen to this group of important, valued, and unfortunately often victimised people and, together, build a system in which they are finally provided with the care they deserve.”

Perisex allies: stop this shit

CW: intersexism

Came across this infographic during some google image searching and I'm still kind of a state of despair about it because it's not just offensively wrong about what intersex is, it was used to teach university students about queer issues:

Alt text: LGBTQIA+ are defined one by one. Intersex is defined erroneously as "These are people who were born with genital organs of both sexes (male and female). It is a genetic condition."

It's one thing for your rando perisex person to be getting this wrong on social media. It's another thing entirely when it's professionals getting this wrong in an educational setting. 😩 And that this infographic appears in a peer-reviewed publication. 😩

It's even worse to know the students that were taught with this infographic were medical students, who will be the ones traumatizing intersex people for decades to come 😩

It's so wrong in so many different ways:

  • Intersex is not limited to people with genital differences. Most intersex people have intersex variations that are not apparent at birth, with puberty being the most common time of life for variations to present. Many people find out in adulthood having no outward physical differences.
  • Of the intersex people with genital differences, they do not have two sets of genitals. Most genital differences are still recognizably female or male (e.g. spadias), and those who have ambiguous genitals have one set.
  • Intersex is not "male parts + female parts" or even "intermediate male/female parts", it is an umbrella term for anybody whose primary/secondary sex characteristics don't line up with what is expected for male and female bodies. Some intersex variations make women look more feminine, or make men look more masculine.
  • Defining intersex by genital differences doesn't just exclude most intersex people, it also sets the tone that we are defined by our genitals. To be publicly intersex is to have non-stop DMs about your genitals. This sort of framing sets up openly intersex people for invasive questions and harassment, and it keeps large numbers of intersex people from coming out.
  • Many intersex variations do not have a known genetic basis. Many intersex variations are caused by exposure to certain hormonal levels in the womb. Certain medications when taken during pregnancy can trigger intersex variations.
  • While bodily variation is necessary for being intersex, the social experience of stigma, discrimination, isolation, hyper-medicalization, and hyper-sexualization are all just as much a part of being intersex.

📣 Perisex allies: this is shit you can stop. When you see other perisex people parrot this sort of misinformation, correct them. Direct them to look up resources written by actually intersex people.

Here are some starter resources to give:

My mom decided to weigh in on this, on the side of the Italian boxer, thinking I'd allow her to repeat bullshit talking points for some reason (never have allowed that shit, especially not from someone who raised me not to tolerate racism or anything that ends with someone being put down)...I made her stay on the line until she admitted she was wrong.

I want to clarify, Angela Carini did not quit because she thought her opponent was trans, nor was she "forced" to quit. She quit because the first punch made her nose bleed and she couldn't breathe. She quit due to fear for bodily safety. She did cry and refuse to shake her opponents hand, but it had nothing to do with her gender, she was just upset she was injured and couldn't continue. She later admitted that she had shown poor sportsmanship in refusing to shake her opponents hand, and apologized to her and to everyone, and clarified it had nothing to do with gender, and if the Olympics said she can compete she can compete. Angela Carini is being used by terfs as a scapegoat and is not at fault for anything more than poor sportsmanship.

Dead on. Thanks for adding this. Here's a thread from Threads with more background on Carini.

Transphobia are falling for a false narrative about Khelif, and tumblrites are falling for a false narrative about Carini. Carini was not wrong to cry, and to claim she's "weaponising white woman tears" or that she's responsible for the hate Khelif faced is to blame a woman for the actions of people twisting her story in a way that she's repeatedly disavowed. These women are not against each other, and the problem here isn't which one is right. Neither of them did anything wrong (except Carini was a little rude after getting injured in front of the entire world)

In the case you missed it. In United States Politics, the Biden Administration (current government) has updated Title IX to reword the law to include the line "sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics." in the "Protections against sex-based harassment and discrimination." section.

Meaning, the same protections afforded to cisgender children in schools against discrimination to transgender children.

Full document here:

These protections were previously added by the Obama administration, then revoked by the Trump Administration.

So why is this different?

How it was done. The previous protections afforded to transgender students a part of the federally funded public school programs were done by a guidance document release by the federal government. These guidance documents can be revoked, or edited by subsequent administrations. The Biden Administration has updated the law itself meaning it will be much harder to repeal those restrictions by subsequent administrations. Not impossible, just much harder. This is to take effect August 1st, 2024. Right at the start of the new school year.

So way to go USA. After years of attacking trans kids on every possible angle, this is a step in the right direction.

good news for trans women: kamala harris is not, in fact, a vicious transmisogynist. the actions of her office and of the california department of corrections were wrongly attributed to her and her alone by people who wanted someone else to win, and when harris did become involved in the cases, she rewrote the entire policy for dealing with trans inmates so that they would get the care they need.

I haven't seen this circulating here on Tumblr, so I decided to make my own post.

last saturday, in Porto, there was a pride parade going down the street and this old man was standing there, by his front door, waving the portuguese flag. most people on the parade probably thought the same: old person waving the national flag? he's probably protesting against the parade, he's a nationalist of some sort.

then the old man called for that person to come near him. the whole parade stopped. everyone just.. stopped moving. they didn't know what to expect, and most expected the worst. and that person decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and approached the old man. and then... they traded flags, he hugged the person and then he waved the pride flag happily. everyone cheered him.

such a wholesome moment. 🥹❤️🌈

My grandma just called and, among other things, said “You have hips. That’s good! Men like hips!” and then she interrupted herself to say “Women like hips. People of your preferred gender like hips. I can never remember”  And I was like “Thanks grandma! My preferred gender is none of them, no thanks.” and she was like “Okay, no one will comment on your hips!” very self satisfied, like “aha, I have figured it out” I think like half her grandkids are some variety of not-straight and she can’t always remember which is which but she is the epitome of like “she’s a little confused, but she’s got the spirit!”

Update: I gave it some thought and my estimate was wrong. Of the grandkids that are out, it’s 1/3, not ½

I told my grandma that I’d told my friends about what she said and that some of y’all had said you wished she was your grandma, and she said “Well, you can never have too many grandkids!”  So like…consider her your honorary grandma* I guess? *if you want an honorary grandma, that is

Update on my grandma: I told her my hair was standing up, but instead of straight line it was diagonal and she said “That’s okay, you’ve never been straight!” and then laughed so hard at her own joke I thought she was going to drop the phone

Happy almost pride month! Have my confused-but-supportive grandma!

An update: my grandma just called me to ask if I knew it was pride month

banning a trans woman from playing women’s darts is crazy on every level. it’s like saying cis women have horrible hand-eye coordination so it wouldn’t be fair.

there was talk of banning trans women from women’s chess, don’t know what came of that. it was like. okay. you’re admitting you think cis women have less developed logistical skills than AMAB people. and I’m sure mediocre transphobic female chess players were cheering this on like in every sport where this debate comes up but Jesus that’s setting feminism back by 60 years.

One thing that's likely not visible to all younger queers is that little kids shows have gotten radically queerer in the last 10 years.

I'm not just talking about Owl House, Kippo etc, much as I love them.

I mean like stuff for kindergardners.

Characters in Strawberry Shortcake and Superhero Girls and more have gay parents just unremarkably in the background. That was unthinkable 15 years ago.

But the thing that shocks me utterly is the casual inclusion of nonbinary characters.

Dee and Friends in Oz, Polly Pocket, Craig of the Creek...it seems like half the shows my daughter watches have nonbinary characters just seamlessly included. Not even a Very Special Episode. Just...here's the scarecrow in charge of scarecrow village who uses they/them pronouns that everyone just uses without comment.

I was almost 30 before I found the word nonbinary. For my kid to just grow up with this is astonishing.

Conservatives are so mad because it's INCREDIBLY hard to just put this kind of inclusion back away. Once something is normal, and clearly not causing anything bad to happen, it's hard to convince people to be scared of it.

ppl on here get sooo mad when someone says you should be a little bit grateful for lgbt allies like sorry but i have homophobic overbearing parents & im used to people thinking gays are freaks and “groomers” so the concept of “cishet people who are willing to ally themselves with the lgbt liberation movement” is something i dont think ill ever take for granted. but thats just me i guess idk. yeah its praising the bare minimum but receiving the bare minimum allyship is a blessing when im used to deeply entrenched homophobia. i’d rather shit talk the people who actually want me dead instead of the cishets showing up at pride to day drink with drag queens. what does ridiculing them do except ruin the vibe :|
