my friend just told me that there's a secret second dashboard that solely contains posts from people you've turned on post notifications for, and when i click the link in the messages it opens it within the tumblr app, so the tumblr app also has a secret second dashboard for post notification blogs, and the only way to access it is to open the link for it within the app.

an insight i heard on a podcast recently that really lit up my brain was this idea that the role of costuming in a period piece is not necessarily to BE historically accurate, but to convey information to the audience in a visual language they will recognize. like how in titanic, kate winslet has very contemporary hair and makeup that is giving fiona apple or tori amos, while leo has the same floppy 90s heartthrob hair with the blonde highlights that he did offscreen - this wasn't a failure or lapse in historical accuracy so much as hair and makeup chosen to make it clear at a glance that these are the main characters and he's a rogueish heartthrob while she's moody and independent. and i think that being able to translate these key pieces of information in visually interesting and quickly recognizable ways is such a skill that goes unsung most of the time, but it's even more important in period pieces where just doing what's historically accurate may be counterproductive to that goal and end up being confusing or visually unappealing. anyway, just musing on that while watching the crucible (1996)

This is especially frustrating because the only reason we know the wind speed is because NOAA's Hurricane Hunters literally fly into the hurricane and collect vital data. They fly in and out of the storm over and over in 8 hour shifts.

This brave team flies two identical Lockheed P3s called Kermit and Miss Piggy.

You can see the dangling ornaments in the videos to determine which plane they are in.

And when I say they fly into the hurricane, I mean they fly *into* the hurricane.

Here they are in the eye of Milton.

As you may notice, this flight was in Kermit.

So the next time you see live data about a hurricane's wind speed and pressure, just remember how that was collected and don't be a giant turd about it.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

this also goes for aesthetic or -core titles. 'y2k tank top' is going to get you resellers and fast fashion brands advertising to people looking to meet a current trend. 'thin strap crop tank top' is going to get you a diverse group of results and not upcharge you to hell and back

additionally, shop second hand when you can, second hand and thrift sites typically organize clothes by the cut and color. theyll be more affordable than a depop seller curating you a style to sell you
