Trektober Day #26: Meet Ugly

(I've been toying with a second installment to Stand Beside Me In The Mirror, aka the one where Julian is kidnapped by Garak's creepy transporter clone. So here's an excerpt of that!)

"You'll forgive him, for whatever it is he did, but you won't forgive me?"

Julian stared flatly.

"You kidnapped me. He didn't."

"Ah, but he would have, in my circumstances."

"If you don't understand the difference between being kidnapped and not, I'm not sure I can explain it to you."

"Why must you make everything so difficult, Doctor?"

Julian leaned his head back and reminded himself that the argument was the goal. Elim was deliberately trying to be provoking, and so the best thing to do would be to not give him what he was looking for.

"Hm," Julian said, as neutrally as he could manage.

"I must say Doctor, I am finding you to be something of a disappointment," Elim observed.

Julian couldn't quite keep the sarcasm from his voice. "I'm so sorry to hear it."

He also does this to the teenage cat who you can tell is also humoring him like yes thank you you licked two square inches of my fur in the wrong direction little brother wonderful

And then he immediately fixes his fur the second the little one walks away lol

My cat does this all the time! (I've never met a cat who licks people as much as she does lol.) And when she sees me petting one of the rabbits, she often comes over to lick them as well.

"Hopefully you haven't mellowed too much for whippies"

Long Eared Bat, huge ears and an adorable face!

Mexican Free Tailed Bat, named for the fact that their uropatagium (back leg membrane) doesn’t cover their tail, leaving them with a teeny mouse-like tail. 

Gould’s Wattled Bat, they got some pearly white sharp teeth, but they tell great jokes and always laugh at yours too. 

“HAHAHAHAHA!”

Hoary Bat, AKA the bat that looks like they’re covered in powdered sugar.

Bulldog Bat, a bulldog… with wings <3 

Vampire Bat, often seen as creepy, but they’re actually really cute. Also fun fact, vampire bats live in a social structure where able-bodied bats go out and feed and then share part of their meal with old/weak/sick members who cannot forage themselves. No survival of the fittest here, every bat helps every bat out <3 

And lastly, the Painted Bat, and yes, those are its actual colors. Can’t get any more Halloween than that <3 

Let me add a couple more!!

A personal favorite of mine: Honduran White Fruit Bat, also known as ‘Marshmallow Bats’! These tiny cuties make tents by nibbling on the leaves until they fold down, and they snuggle close underneath it!

Bumblebee Bat! The smallest bat species and often considered the smallest mammal on Earth!

And the newly discovered Pied Bat!! I couldn’t find much about them, but gosh, they are adorable!!

Trektober Day 25: Post-Apocalyptic

Julian surveyed the neat, orderly line with a furrowed brow. Younger citizens politely stepped back to let older ones ahead; neighbors joked quietly to each other and gossiped about shared acquaintances.

It seemed... well, disturbingly normal.

"They're all taking this very well," he commented.

"Given that Cardassians do need to eat in order to survive, ration distribution is rather welcome, Doctor," Garak said.

"I suppose people can adapt to anything given the right motivation." Julian tapped his card against his thigh as he spoke, then paused as a thought occurred. "How did they get the ration cards distributed so quickly, anyway?"

"Oh, most of us had them to begin with."

"These are better than the ones when I was little," put in an old woman behind them who was shamelessly eavesdropping. "Ugly things, those were."

Julian turned around.

"There was rationing when you were young? But the Dominion-"

"Abundance is the exception on Cardassia, not the norm," Garak cut in, and bobbed a polite bow to the woman. "My friend hasn't been living here for very long."

"Obviously!" she said, with a gesture to her forehead that indicated the remark was more about Julian's species than his manners.

Julian lowered his voice, trying to cut her from the conversation. "They never mentioned this in any of your Cardassian literature."

"Ration cards are hardly a glory of service to the state."
