An emissary of Demeter reminds us that even when we cannot be together with our loved ones in person, we will see them again someday, one way or another. And in the meantime, their memories keeps us warm.

Demeter (associated with Ceres in Roman polytheism) is a Greek goddess of agriculture, the harvest, the earth, and the cycle of life and death. She is often depicted with poppies or bundles of grain, and snakes are one of Her sacred animals. Her daughter is Persephone (Proserpina), Who descends every winter to the Underworld. Demeter awaits Her return, year after year.

As the local forest hag and snake mama, I must send out a little reminder that snakes are active again due to warm weather. This time of year is breeding season for many snakes. If you happen to stumble across a snake, don't panic. Either leave it alone or get a long stick to push it back into the woods. Remember: the danger noodles and nope ropes are friends. They just wanna be left to their business.

The following it a little rat snake I found today. Probably a yearling. Little thing was very calm and went about its way into the woods.

Spring is usually the most dangerous time for snakes because the little noodles are just waking up, are cold, and are looking for food. It is easier to startle a snake during spring which means it is more likely they will attack rather than escape since their energy levels are likely lower. Same goes for first light and mornings.

Keep an eye out in all snake-loving areas: rocky terrain for basking, long grasses and shrubbery, leaf litter, piles of logs or bricks; anything that would be an attractive hiding place for snakes or their lunch.

When out and about in less urban areas with snakes, take care to wear enclosed shoes, pants of thicker material or gaiters, and keep to paths where possible. Walking loudly helps warn little snek noodles of your presence, and most will slither away to avoid confrontation.

Most snake bites are caused by humans being idiots, probably from trying to touch or move the snake. Just don’t. Leave the little bugger be.

It you do get bit, remember: high pressure on the whole limb and very little movement.

Love from your local Australian.
