His pale eyes were half-lidded, as usual. His lips were a straight line, as usual. But somehow, it almost seemed like his face was twisting in pain under the stony, unfeeling mask he wore. Somehow, Corporal Rivaille just hadn’t been himself since the day of Commander Irvin’s funeral. Even now, after the rest of the squad had left the meeting room, Rivaille stayed seated in his chair, eyes fixed on the window, though it didn’t seem like he was looking outside at all. Rather, he seemed lost in his thoughts. So lost he hadn’t even realized Eren was watching him from where he sat three chairs away. If he thought about it rationally, Rivaille had lost countless comrades in battle. It was for that reason Eren couldn’t understand why the commander’s death had hit him so hard. At the end of the day, Commander Irvin Smith was still only one man… wasn’t he?
