A Guide to Some of the Best Queer Asian Shows
The guide includes a show’s basic summary; main genres/tropes/themes and official streaming links (additional info on how to watch at the end of this post)! You can find some content warnings in the reply section of this post. Shows are listed by countries, numbered by the order I recommend watching in, not by rating. All shows have happy endings unless specified otherwise. The list will hopefully be updated regularly (last updated on 04/04/2024, 98 queer shows in total).
Most shows are about mlm, I specify with coloured notes those that are focused on wlw, polyamory, aromantism/asexuality, etc.
Tumblr does not allow large texts or more than 30 images per post at the moment, so you can click on every country’s list to expand them and view them fully in a separate post. You can access this guide in a google doc here.

Dancing in Film: Big Eden (2000) dir. Thomas Bezucha choreography by Alex and Melanie Parkhurst
happy birthday @magterrific
سينما الفؤاد | CINEMA FOUAD (1993) dir. Mohamed Soueid A portrait of Khaled El Kurdi, a Syrian trans former freedom-fighter living in Beirut where she earns a living as a domestic worker and belly dancer. Soueid shows us scenes of El Kurdi’s domestic world: eating, applying make-up, dancing in her bedroom, all while reflecting on her life and experiences. She often alludes to the aggression she faces outside of the home—in the street—and through her adept defiance in the face of some of Soueid’s more goading questions, we recognize the echoing of these aggression in his role as interviewer. جوائے لینڈ | JOYLAND (2022) dir. Saim Sadiq The middle-class Rana family, headed by elder patriarch Amanullah, yearns for the birth of a grandson. i take psychic damage every time i watch a terrence davies film, because they take their damn time exploring such deeply lonely and alienated people, with every frame utterly chock full of tiny details to pay attention to. exhaustingly quiet cinema that stabs at the soul
reblogging again about Big Eden made me think about some of the native american/canadian queer cinema (Indigiqueer Cinema) I've enjoyed.
Found a handy dandy Letterboxd List called Queer Native Pride and Beyond that has a whole bunch of movies I haven't seen yet, and below some of the ones I've gotten to experience (three out of four are linked):
Big Eden: a story about a gay man who returns home, because his grandfather gets sick. A sweet, beautiful man (played by Eric Schweig) starts to secretly make him food to help out. it's an amazing slice-of-life/subtly utopian bit of film-making, in that nobody in the town is homophobic, but being gay/shame is still a big part of the exploration within it.
Wildhood: a movie I got to watch at a film festival (always good to go to your local queer film festivals, many surprises to be had) and it blew me away. a roadtrip movie about two brothers who escape their abusive father to reconnect with the elder's mother and Mi'kmaq heritage. letting go of the instilled shame of being indigenous goes hand in hand with letting go of the instilled shame of being queer
Fancy Dance: this movie isn't about being queer, it's about the ongoing murder of indigenous woman and girls, and it's also a beautiful road trip film between an aunt and her niece, the former of whom is sure her sister is dead but unwilling to face it and to destroy her niece's innocence. Lily Gladstone plays the lead, who's also a lesbian, which is just a choice that works really well for the movie even if it's not the focal point (available on Apple+ TV and however you access movies, but would recommend throwing this one some views if you have access to official streaming)
Honey Moccasin: a 1998 movie i watched at another film festival (this time online), it's anarchic, it's a comedy, it's a thriller, it's got musical beats, it weaves in the intricacies of exploring Native identity and Queer identity, it's a surreal story about a few things, one of which include focus on a "closeted drag queen." it's a movie that beats against conventional film-making to create something not beholden to tropes and clichés forced upon narratives about being Native
BIG EDEN (2000) dir. Thomas Bezucha Henry Hart, a successful New York Artist, returns to the town of his childhood to care for the ailing grandfather who raised him. Back in tiny and quaint Big Eden, Henry must come to terms with his relationship to Dean Stewart, his best friend from high School, as well as the object of his unrequited love. All these years Henry has been pining for a dream image of Dean from back then. This is also the story of Pike Dexter, the shy, unassuming owner of the town’s general store, who is as surprised as anyone to find himself falling in love with Henry. The people of Big Eden conspire and attempt to bring Henry and Pike together. (link in title)
It recently occurred to me that one of my fave feel good/comfort movies, Big Eden, could be included as part of C6D because it stars Eric Schweig who was in the due South pilot.
Big Eden is a sweet film about a gay man who returns to his small hometown in Montana to take care of his ill grandfather, and pretty much the whole town then proceeds to play matchmaker between him and the local general store owner, Pike (Eric Schweig).
This film means a lot to me as Native/Indigenous representation is hard to come by, and queer Native/Indigenous rep even more so. I highly recommend it to any dS/C6D fans, and anyone in general, who wants to watch a lovely queer romance.
Big Eden is one of my ultimate feel-good movies!!!
In “Big Eden,” I liked that Pike was a nod to “Babette’s Feast,” and there’s a bit of a “Cyrano” thing in that he leads Henry to believe that the Widow Thayer (Nan Martin) is doing the cooking.
Gay people come in all packages, and I remember Eric [Schweig] was moved and motivated to play Pike. He said he was doing it for his unseen brothers and sisters in the gay Native American community. He felt a real responsibility, and he wanted to make sure he honored those people.
“I just thought, ‘Oh well, you know, it will probably be the first and only ever gay role I’ll ever get to do, so I’m just gonna go, you know, rock it at the audition, cuz I really wanna do it’ […] I think at the time, I just liked the material because it didn’t have any sort of… racist dialogue that I was so used to, and when you’re a Native American actor, you’re pigeonholed into doing certain types of roles. You sort of get used to doing period piece after period piece, and it’s no fun. And they don’t write gay characters for Native American people."
*
Honestly Eric Schweig was the big celebrity guest star for me in the Pilot. Who is this [squints] Paul Grass?
today is a good day to watch nightbreed
i've only seen a couple of clive barker movies, but this movie is really speedrunning the brutal violence of heterosexuality themes
he says, as the female lead sings Johnny Get Angry
this movie would make a really interesting double bill with labyrinth
subtext? where we're going, we don't need subtext
is he, you know? nightbreed?
david cronenberg playing the doctor here is such a funny choice, particularly his "oh, i'm not one of them" line
the police armory is meant to be terrifying and over the top in this and it just looks downright quaint now when cops are rolling up to any random call ten cop cars deep with snipers and a tank
gonna tell my children this was x-men
this ending is real rough but man the creature effects and design are just delightful
really not here for the goofass romance but you know whatever
