So here’s a solution to the whole thing with iOS Tumblr users that I haven’t seen anybody talk about, but that I unintentionally implemented before I even knew what the problem was, and it’s this: turn off auto-update. I realize that if you’ve already downloaded the latest version, intentionally or automatically, that it’s too late for this, but I don’t have auto-update on for any of my apps, and I’m sitting here on my iPhone looking at as many blocked tags as I please.  I remember a couple months ago people were all upset that mobile had apparently removed quick re-blog or the ability to instantly scroll to the top of the page. This also never affected me, because I never updated the app to the version that had that change. Turn auto-update off, at least for Tumblr, and many many problems will suddenly magically disappear.

Breaking Bad + banned tags

Apple makes a big show of being a socially progressive company but then tells Tumblr to ban tags like "racism," "antisemitism," "antiblackness," "lesbophobia," etc. As we all know, actual racists aren't posting in the "racism" tag, but rather anti-racism activists and POC talking about their experiences with it. So progressive to basically ban organized discussion of those topics on iOS!!!

This is just part of the broader effort to make the internet more sanitized and advertiser-friendly at the expense of freedom of expression. And unfortunately, marginalized groups talking about their oppression is bad for advertising and the sanitized "family friendly" image brands are going for. It makes people uncomfortable.

This is why I roll my eyes when right-wingers complain about "woke" companies. Sure, Apple or PayPal or Uber might change their logo to a rainbow-colored one in honor of Pride month or make a tweet in support of BLM, but it's complete lip service. Having terms of service agreements against hate speech isn't the same as actively supporting and fostering social justice causes. These are the same companies that spend millions of dollars on anti-union efforts to prevent their employees from unionizing and being treated better. Do you really think they give a fuck about treating people fairly?
