Storge is the natural love that, for example, a mother has for her child. The mother nurtures, protects, and helps the child grow. Although this can be a struggle at times, there is a give-and-take of mutual affection. This is not the same as philia because, in philia, the two parties are usually equal in status and in their power to serve the other. In storge, there is an imbalance in that power to serve given the young age of the infant or toddler.
