The Holly and the Ivy, 31: new year, and

the yellow ones. December Drabbles

31 Dec.: new year prompt: last night, and new year

*

Have I ever told you you’re a genius?

Many times.

Amazing, fantastic, brilliant?

You used to.

Oh, hush. I still do. All the time.

You do. Thank you. Where’s this going?

Another proof of your genius: declining three invitations and spending this last night in.

Comes a time when I want just my one person.

I’ve a confession to make. Don’t be peeved.

You have another person?

No, you git. There’s only you for me.

Ah. Fine, then. What’s your confession?

The yellow ones. I hate them. They've got to go.

Fine. Happy new year, John.

Happy new year, Sherlock.

Through Jan. 6 I’ll be posting Johnlock drabbles daily, here and on AO3 (The Holly and the Ivy: December Drabbles)

Nudge me if you want to be added or untagged. I'm pretty random about tagging, but will remove your name right away if you tell me to.

Happy new year! and thanks for reblogging.

The Holly and the Ivy, 24: To hear the

angels sing. December Drabbles

Ch. 24: To Hear the Angels Sing. Prompt courtesy of my own inner adolescent male

*

From the outset, I said that soldier fellow would either be the making of my brother, or make him worse than ever.

I never predicted it would be both.

Sherlock is steadier now, stronger, less self-destructive, which makes my life calmer.

But he also appears to be discovering that adolescent male humour which his solitude made him skip the first time round.

When I asked John if he liked Sherlock’s carols, which Mummy used to call angelic, the wretch interjected, “Oh, I didn’t wait for Christmas to make John hear the angels sing!”

I winced, and John blushed and guffawed.

In December I’ll be posting Johnlock drabbles daily, here and on AO3 (The Holly and the Ivy: December Drabbles) Mine are comfort snacks, not a proper storyline, just practicing here!

Nudge me if you want to be added or untagged. I'm pretty random about tagging, but will remove your name right away if you tell me to.

And thanks for reblogging!

Christmas ficlet ... with  gorgeous art by Dangeles

I commissioned a painting from the amazing @dangeles for my Christmas ficlet Something red, something green, something sparkly (1100 words) and I’m over the MOON!

I mean honestly, look at that sly cheeky grin, that languid available pose. If that doesn’t whisper “Santa Baby” I don’t know what does. Thank you, Dangeles! Commissions are open, right?

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

  • insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
  • add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
  • delete -> self explanatory
  • on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

Farewell to Esterbrook

Esterbrook passed away yesterday.

Esterbrook, whose real name was Fawn, lived as honestly and true to her beliefs as anyone I've ever known. She was thoughtful, caring, and hilarious, and more than willing to mix it up for a good cause.

Esterbrook was an actual professional writer who made a living writing actual, professional words. Her fics reflected her gift, and then some. I had the opportunity to beta for her once, and I literally had no notes. Just first pass, flawless. She was astonishing in her assurance with the written word.

Years ago, when I'd just met her, I barely bit back a laugh when, while leading a panel on Sussexlock at Sherlock Seattle, she called out those writers who insisted on painting Sherlock and John in middle age as feeble and past their prime by indicating her own fit figure, dark hair and dancing eyes and saying, "Hey, kids, this is what 40 looks like."

To remember her, and to remind us all of her brilliant talent. I'm linking probably her best known fic, Stay. The Writers' Suite crew mourns her passing and honors her memory. She was an extraordinary writer and an extraordinary person. We'll miss her.

If There Were Any Time For A Miracle - Season’s Greetings from the Holmes Family Christmas. There’s snow and mistletoe, misunderstandings and music.

Tomorrow - At Baker Street Mrs Hudson has her work cut out for her - making idiots admit to being in love. The only problem is that one of them is going back to his dreadful wife tomorrow. Luckily Hudders knows a trick or two.

A Little Christmas Spirit - In which a Christmas cocktail must be decided upon which leads to unforeseen circumstances.

This Time - Not exactly jolly, but not hopeless. Sherlock is breaking his unspoken rules by meeting up with John but somehow he cannot stay away.

A Smart Arse Consulting Detective Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas  - This is not the Christmas Eve John had planned but it turns out for the best despite being locked in a freezing farm building for the night.

Please watch out for the ratings and read the tags and warnings.

Wishing you all a peaceful and safe season.
