You’re at a house party off-campus—perhaps you’re coming out of the bathroom after finally breaking the seal or you’re walking out of the kitchen, drink in hand—and you notice a black woman who looks much more wasted than you do, being led into a bedroom by a relatively sober guy. Being the good feminist you are, you register that the situation looks suspect. What do you do?

According to a new study, white women aren’t likely to intervene and help. The study, published in The Psychology Of Women Quarterly, posed a similar scenario to 160 white female undergraduates. The students were randomly assigned whether the intoxicated woman in the story had a “distinctively black name"—LaToya—or an ambiguous name—Laura, as a control.

When asked to report on their intent to intervene and how they viewed the situation and the potential victim, the white undergrads said they would be less likely to help when they perceived the woman who was at risk of being sexually assaulted was black, because they felt “less personal responsibility.” Secondarily, they also “perceived that [the black victim] experienced more pleasure in the pre-assault situation” at a slightly higher rate than the control group. (The control group given the scenario with the non-racialized name uniformly perceived the victim to be white.)

“We found that although white students correctly perceived that black women were at risk in a pre-assault situation, they tended not to feel as personally involved in the situation,” the researchers at SUNY Geneseo, Jennifer Katz and Christine Merrilees, said in an interview with PsyPost. In other words, “despite their shared status as women, white female bystanders in the current study may have felt that a Black woman’s plight was not as personally relevant because race has a more powerful effect than gender on intent to intervene and feelings of responsibility to intervene,” they write in the study.

Previous research has found that white people, in general, are less likely to help black victims. A 2008 study on racial bias in helping behavior troublingly found that “as [a situation’s] level of emergency increased, the speed and quality of help white participants offered to black victims relative to white victims decreased.” When the victim was black, the white participants also viewed the situation as less severe.

For anyone not so familiar with cat behavior, this cat is out of its mind excited to do this. It’s much more rare for cars to wag their tails but it means the same as it does when a dog does it. This cat is curious and proud and playing. It keeps looking at its owner too, like “LOOK AT ME, DAD” and it’s so rare to get videos of cats this happy. This is fucking rad

Nope.. wagging tails means anger or irritation in cat body language.

hey y’all, hope you don’t mind me stepping in!

you’re both right :) a wagging tail means the cat is highly stimulated (think coiled spring, ready to go off). depending on the situation, this can be interpreted differently - just like people can smile nervously at job interviews vs. happily grin at friends.

in most cases, it’s safe to interpret overstimulation as ‘you’re doing something to amp up the cat & it wants you to stop’ (ex. unwanted petting). it should be seen as a warning; all that pent-up energy COULD be released as a swat or bite.

BUT in this case, that tail-wagging ‘frustration’ is the stimulation that comes from problem-solving (where can I jump? is it safe to go here?) and the excitement of play. it’s good to be wary of ‘cute’ animals vids, but this seems like an unproblematic video!

I’d like to add to this–just look at world-famous box-loving cat, Maru, who wags his tail every time he stuffs his body into a box or other small object. He’s clearly not about to attack the person behind the camera! It’s definitely based on stimulation, but more to the point of “ahhh FINALLY I’ve gotten into the small space, now how do I get the rest of me inside”:

i love everything about cats ever always

unpopular opinion but i think the film and tv industries should have better labor laws even if it makes it harder or impossible to depict certain things

i dont care if it makes it harder to produce game of thrones or whatever, acting should not leave women traumatized

Okay I know this is about acting and people are getting more traction about it (sexuality safety coordinators are a job! yell about them. demand your shows get them) but

Any person who has worked on a set for more than a few years has at least one person they know who died.

Not usually on set, but afterwards.  Because we don’t have anyone shutting down production for unsafe practices when “unsafe” means 16 hour days.  Or more.  For weeks.  Finishing a day before hour 12 (not including lunch) is considered an early leave.

I had teachers tell us not to, unless we absolutely had to, take music video gigs because they’ll work you for 24 hours and send you to drive home.  And if we had to work that, pull over and nap in our car because multiple people per year fall asleep at the wheel and go over the canyons around LA.

I know you mean acting but please.  Don’t forget the crew.  We have a shockingly high rate of suicide because these working schedules leave us with no sleep, no time outside of work, and it destroys lives, relationships, and families.  Burnout is high.  Chronic illness and broken bodies are common.  Cocaine use in order to get through a 20 hour day is rampant.  Every single one of your reality shows is fueled by cocaine.

The number of days that are scheduled to shoot a feature has shrunk dramatically in the past two decades.  Which means longer days.

Netflix shows are notorious for being poorly organized, understaffed, and long days.

There are labor laws but what they do is levy fines.  Those fines are either factored into budget, people are bullied into not reporting actual hours, or crew members see them as incentive to take those jobs because more money and cost of living is high.  (Also this industry has a crew culture of dick measuring by sticking your wang in a blender and boasting about how many 100 hour weeks you pulled.)

this can be applied for people working in animation as well. Like I know people who work at Pixar and they straight up work 12 hour days and go into work on weekends to meet their deadlines. The incredibles 2 made over a billion dollars and Pixar still cut jobs due to “budget”. The entertainment industry is a business at the end of the day. There here to make money and they are going to do it at the expense of workers because they know no one is going to do anything about it.

I know this post is specifically about film and tv but in general I don’t think I’ve seen any entertainment-related industry provide safe, sane working hours+environments to the creators who are working their asses off to create things the public can enjoy, and that pisses me off

every time you ridicule a nasty person’s appearance there is chance it’s going to reach a vulnerable person who sees themselves in their features

This. It really frustrates me when someone is being problematic and then people start attacking their looks. Like go ahead and call out the person for bad behavior all you want but when you start making it about their appearance you become part of the problem.

if you’re offline or away and i message you something (like a link to a meme or a picture or w/e) honestly just assume that i’m just leaving it there for when you get back and not expecting you to answer straight away. i don’t need you to respond with “hey, sorry, i wasn’t at the computer!” or anything. i was leaving u a gift for later.

This also applies if you’re online and just don’t want to or have the energy to deal with humans in the moment. Just because we have the ability to reply in real time does not mean we have the obligation.

im like a cat i drag the posts to ur doorstep and if ur not there it’s ok, the post will be on ur porch for later

ok but imagine watching bella and edward’s relationship from the outside like. ok this new girl moves to school and she starts dating that really weird guy from that really weird family for like. 6 months. and then he leaves her and shes like. really depressed for 6 months. then he comes back and like 6 months later youre invited to their wedding??????? i would be like bitch what the fuck

And then they go on their honeymoon only to have him come back and be like “oh yeah, she’s dead now, so sad”

That sounds like an episode of one of those “True Crime” shows where they know he murdered her but never had the evidence to prove it.

Why did “be critical of your media” turn into “find all its flaws and hate it” why did people become allergic to FUN

Because people confuse “critical as in critical thinking” with “critical as in criticizing something,” so they think that “look for something bad, no matter how far-fetched” is what “being critical” means.

Change.org - Petition To Hire 1,000,000 People To Put Their Fingers In The Shoot Hole Of Peoples’ Guns So They Can’t Shoot Them

It’s still gonna shoot… And they’re gonna lose a finger

No. The finger blocks the bullet. We can do this

This is a gun we’re talking about. The projectile is fired using an explosion, not by compressed air of a toy gun or the elastic forces of a sling shot. People would be lucky if they only lost their finger.

The finger blocks it

The finger won’t block it - the shaft is only there for keeping the bullet straight, all the propulsion happens behind the bullet. The bullet would rip through the finger, not that many would actually fit without the victim being a child, and beyond.

The bullet would go forward a little and then hit the finger and stop it’s not that hard to understand

People are going to lose their hands. Go watch Mythbusters. They did an episode on this, the hand fucking exploded.

Avatar
hungwy

No, the bullet would start to go but stop at the finger. Thats basic physics. Also hands dont explode normally they did something wrong.

Avatar
blipblerp

Why the dingleknockers would you even consider sticking your finger in the barrel of a loaded gun?? the amount of force propelling the bullet at that close of range would shatter the finger at the very least; this is a petition for 1,000,000 people to loose the use of their hands. If a bullet explodes the back of a persons skull when they shoot it in their mouth it sure as hell will explode a finger.

No the finger would stop it

I’m loving the idiocy of this post.

Ppl with brains: ummm finger go boom…

Others: no bullet stop. U no kno fisics >:V

no the finger would stop it

You guy who think the bullet would stop at the finger have never shot a gun and can volunteer to it their fingers in the barrel of my 9 mil and I’ll I’ll the trigger and see if it will stop the bullet. Dumdasses

the finger would stop it

Since when was this a gender thing? 1,000,000 people are gonna lose their hand because people are taking such extreme was to show guns are bad when he can already see that. This is why I can’t stand shit like this sometimes.

Avatar

No, silly, see, the bullet would stop because the finger would be in the way

Is this what they think will happen if the petition gets enough signatures?

Avatar
dresupi

no, the finger will stop the bullet

The bullet will rip straight through a finger and maybe more of the person’s body…. how hard is it to understand this

No, this is very simple, the bullet will get to the finger and then stop.

I really don’t understand what you people aren’t getting about this. The bullet will travel down the barrel a little ways but then the finger stops it. Easy.

I will never understand why some cats have a bread addiction like

No cat, …….you are a carnivorous predator.

You no eat bread

What are you even doing

My coworker who adopted one of Mona’s kittens gave him some bagel once and now he’s a mad bagel fiend. He had to put locks on his pantry so the cat wouldn’t break in and eat through the bagel bag.

Avatar
f1rstperson

One of my cats was rescued from outside. I’d only ever had a super polite cat who would come up and sniff food and then be like “can i have this?”

So when this other cat came up I was like oh you wanna sniff the bread right? Here it is so you can sniff it.

Instead she just Jean Valjeaned the whole thing.

Oh my god 😂😂😂

I was super curious about this, so I googled it, and apparently: it’s the yeast! Cats are batshit for the taste of yeast, to the point where it’s used to flavoUr kitty food.

I also read that MOST breads should be safe in small quantities, but other types (like garlic or raising bread) can be dangerous, and raw dough is a big no-no. So! PSA!

Context: My character had just found a book of mispells (spells like message becomes massage, mage armor becomes mage armoire, and speak with dead becomes speak with dad) that she’s been using a lot until we had entered a private competition overseen by the king of a dwarven kingdom. In the middle of the competition he suddenly dropped dead, apparently from being poisoned.

Guards: all teams in are participating the competition are currently under suspicion of murdering the king, line up so we can find the murder weapon

(the guards search every team, until finally reaching us and searching through our stuff)

Guards: alright, we found the the murder weapon in this group

Our group: what

Guards: *pointing at my character* on her

Everyone in the group except me: WHAT!?but she’s too much of a coward to try and murder anyone!

Me: wow, thank guys.

Guards: regardless, you are under arrest. do want to say anything before we haul you off?

Me: …

Me: can i have my one phone call? i need to tell my dad i’ve been arrested.

I did not get my one phone call, and thus begun the rest of my group’s search for the real murderer.

Microsoft announces it will shut down ebook program and confiscate its customers' libraries

Microsoft has a DRM-locked ebook store that isn’t making enough money, so they’re shutting it down and taking away every book that every one of its customers acquired effective July 1.

Customers will receive refunds.

This puts the difference between DRM-locked media and unencumbered media into sharp contrast. I have bought a lot of MP3s over the years, thousands of them, and many of the retailers I purchased from are long gone, but I still have the MP3s. Likewise, I have bought many books from long-defunct booksellers and even defunct publishers, but I still own those books.

When I was a bookseller, nothing I could do would result in your losing the book that I sold you. If I regretted selling you a book, I didn’t get to break into your house and steal it, even if I left you a cash refund for the price you paid.

People sometimes treat me like my decision not to sell my books through Amazon’s Audible is irrational (Audible will not let writers or publisher opt to sell their books without DRM), but if you think Amazon is immune to this kind of shenanigans, you are sadly mistaken. My books matter a lot to me. I just paid $8,000 to have a container full of books shipped from a storage locker in the UK to our home in LA so I can be closer to them. The idea that the books I buy can be relegated to some kind of fucking software license is the most grotesque and awful thing I can imagine: if the publishing industry deliberately set out to destroy any sense of intrinsic, civilization-supporting value in literary works, they could not have done a better job.

If you’ve got an ereader and want to actually own your books, I heartily recommend using cailbre to scrape the DRM off and so you can backup the files.

A special kind of magic happens when kids gather around a table to play a fantasy role-playing game. Legends are born, friendships are forged, and they begin to experience real-world personal growth.

For the past seven years, we have been using tabletop games as therapy to help kids become more confident, creative and socially empowered. We’re ready to help thousands of children around the world, but we need your help!

Critical Core is a tabletop role-playing game designed to help kids on the autism spectrum build social skills and confidence. It’s a great way for parents to engage with their children at home, and for professionals and experienced gamers to use as a group social skills tool.

Critical Core is brought to you by Game to Grow, a 501©(3) not-for-profit organization, and co-developed with autism advocates, parents, therapists, and educators.

  • Suitable for cognitive age 9+, including teens and adults.
  • 2 to 4 players recommended, plus one adult that acts as the facilitator. (Game Master)
  • Players must have basic listening and verbalization skills.
  • When running games with young players on the spectrum, parent or certified therapist should be present.
  • Experienced gamers will be able to integrate Critical Core into their favorite platform: Ruleset is adapted and streamlined from D&D’s 5th Edition OpenSRD.
  • A great introduction to tabletop role-playing games for everyone.

The Critical Core Starter Set has everything you need to play. The game has been tuned to be as easy as possible to get started and stay engaged.

  • Facilitator’s Guide - For parents, therapists, and Game Masters, our best practices on running fun and effective therapeutic gaming groups.
  • Player & Game Master Guides - Quick-start rules and playing guides for players and Game Masters.
  • Adventure Modules - Tested and tuned to be challenging and fun.
  • Dice (4 sets) - One for each player, one for the Game Master. Enough to run a 3 player game out-of-the-box.
  • Character Sheets - 4 popular hero archetypes, each with their own unique abilities.
  • Game Cards - Not required for play, but helpful aids for both players and Game Masters - Visualization, quick-reference rules, and spell cards.
  • Game Tokens - Visualization aids for working with the included map.
  • Reusable map - whiteboard marker friendly.

Please note: Artwork shown is work-in-progress and may be subject to change!

Critical Core is fit-for-purpose, designed to help neurodiverse players get started and stay engaged. At the same time, facilitators are provided with the right tools to make the experience effective without it ‘feeling like therapy’.

Each encounter the players face is targeted to help build strength in areas that are related to challenges associated with autism spectrum disorder.

Critical Core is scaffolded around the DIR/Floortime model, and game encounters map to the FEDC framework. (Function Emotional Developmental Capacities)

But all of this is under the hood. At its heart, Critical Core is simply FUN.

When kids engage in a world of fantasy play they are free to explore new ideas and relationships in a safe and fun sandbox. Skills learned while playing Critical Core can last a lifetime.

Although designed for kids on the autism spectrum, Critical Core is just as beneficial (and fun) for all kids. It’s an easy stepping stone into the fantastic world of tabletop role-playing games.

Critical Core is built on established developmental frameworks and distills seven years of practical gaming therapy experience into an easy-to-use format. It is an amazing tool that can be used at home, at school, in a therapist’s office, or out in the community. And above all, it’s great fun.

Game to Grow - Adam Davis (MA Ed) and Adam Johns (LMFT)

Critical Core is brought to you by Game to Grow, a 501©(3) organization that runs tabletop RPG therapy gaming groups every week. Founders Adam Johns and Adam Davis are distilling 7 years of experience and best practices into the Critical Core project so that the benefits of intentional gaming can be spread to an even wider audience.

Virginia Spielmann (MSOT) - Executive Director of STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder in Denver, Colorado.

Virginia is a British trained Occupational Therapist with more than 20 years experience working in pediatrics. Virginia co-leads the development of the Critical Core Project, defining the system within the established DIR Floortime™ framework of developmental intervention.

mcgarrybowen Greater China - creative agency

The Critical Core project was initiated and co-created by creative agency mcgarrybowen Greater China as part of an ongoing program to provide creative solutions for social good.

ICDL - The Interdisciplinary Council on Development and Learning

A not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting each person’s development to their fullest potential. ICDL was formed over 20 years ago to be the official home of DIR® and DIRFloortime, recognized as the next generation of evidence-based intervention for autism and other developmental challenges.

Your passion and support can make Critical Core a reality. Please, pledge now and then get a friend to do the same. Together we can bring the incredible benefits of intentional gaming to those who need it most.

We’re committed to getting this right. The majority of our time will be spent improving and refining the Critical Core Starter Set with the feedback from beta testers and testing groups. We also have some final artwork and design work to take care of, and of course there is the physical production. We’ll be keeping you informed throughout the process, and probably asking for some help and advice along the way!

Game to Grow is a not-for profit 501© company, and our donations are allocated to helping run game groups for kids across the Seattle region. Kickstarter is important for two reasons:

  • First, you are an amazing community, and if anyone can help spread the word about the incredible benefits of role-playing games, it’s you!
  • Second, there are costs involved in developing and manufacturing Critical Core, so Kickstarter helps us to produce this amazing project!

Perhaps you already have a favorite role-playing game and are wondering how Critical Core can fit into your gaming life. Like many of you, we are avid gamers and have many games we’ve loved for years.

Critical Core can improve the games you’re already playing.

If you’re already playing an established RPG with your kids, your students, or your community, Critical Core can still help you improve your game and boost your outcomes.

Critical Core contains a rule system, designed to be easily accessible to a neuro-diverse population as well as new facilitators, but that’s not all! If you are already established using a game that you enjoy and find effective, you’ll be able to use the other components of Critical Core that are designed to support a game facilitator in helping their players learn and grow.

Critical Core contains a unique module design where in-game scenarios are targeted to real-world development outcomes. This can be translated to most established role-playing games. Additionally, the Critical Core kit includes a facilitator’s guide which contains the learnings of the past seven years of facilitating role-playing games for social growth.

Do I need prior experience with role-playing games to run Critical Core?              No. Critical Core is a ‘rules-light’ tabletop RPG, and the instructions will be designed to help brand new Game Masters quickly learn how to facilitate games that are enriching and fun. We are also planning to release video guides and tutorials to help you out!

I’m already playing tabletop RPGs with my kids!

Awesome! You already know the amazing benefits we’re talking about. You also know from experience, that tabletop RPGs can be easy to pick up and play, but learning how to be a great Game Master can be challenging, especially for new players.

Why not use an established role-playing game platform?

Critical Core’s rule set is adapted from D&D’s 5th Edition Open SRD. We have taken out some of the complexity for new players and Game Masters. Think of Critical Core as an entry-level platform: easier for parents, schools, and clinics to pick up and play.

Are you trying to replace my favorite game?

No way! We see Critical Core as a stepping stone to the wide world of RPG gaming. Actually, we hope that as kids grow familiar and comfortable with the system, they can move on to your favorite platform. If you’re already using some of the great games out there, then more power to you!

So how is Critical Core different?

We have applied our experience and best practices to help children (and caregivers) have the most effective and fun experience possible.

  • Meticulously designed adventure content to help empower kids with social and problem-solving challenges.
  • Game encounters, guidebooks, mechanics heavily influenced by established developmental frameworks (DIR/Floortime).
  • Rules have been adapted to be easier for new players and Game Masters to pick up.
  • Adventures divided into ‘one-shot’ chapters that can be completed in 90 minutes.
  • Goldilocks Content’  -  not too complex/scary and not too easy/cartoony. Just right.

I’ve been GM'ing for years, what’s in this for me?

For starters, you’ll be able to pick up the Critical Core system in minutes. We have had inquiries from organizations from across the globe who want to start using Critical Core. You could be a great mentor or GM partner for Critical Core games. Please contact us for more info on how you can help!

Please support this Kickstarter!

Oh!  I was kind of concerned because while I didn’t see anything like “people with autism” that might be a big red flag, I couldn’t tell.  So I went to look at the comments.

“Hi there,I’ve had a read through the description of Critical Core, and I have some questions and concerns… Are there any actually autistic adults on your team? Did you consult with the autistic community (as in, people who are actually autistic, and not just professionals who work with autistic children and family members of autistic children) about this game? What is your stance on groups such as Autism Speaks? I’ve seen concerns raised from others within the disability community that your approach seems very medical model driven. Can you speak to where you stand on your approach to autism specifically, and disability generally, in terms of the medical model vs. the social model of disability? For some context: I’m autistic (and an adult) and a huge gaming nerd (mostly online RPGs, but I’ve been fairly recently introduced to D&D and love it). I love the idea of this game! I love tabletop games, board games, card games, computer games… I love games! I am, however, very concerned about the lack of transparency around these issues I’ve raised, and I’d love to hear where you stand (and it’d be great if you could add your response/some clarity to the campaign description!).Thank you so much,Charlotte“
“Hi Charlotte! Thanks for posting your comment. I’ll answer your questions in order. 1) Yes we have autists on the team. We have some posts from specific team members coming up this week on social media.2) Yes we consulted from day one. Autistic adults, autistic parents who are also parents of autistic children, autistic youth. 3) We try to follow the ASAN guidelines on all our language, communication and more. 4) We are all about support and very much believers in the social model of disability. We do not think anyone needs ‘fixing’ or ‘normalizing’. We are about providing youth with a place to connect, feel understood and learn who they want to be in the world. We want to share this with allied health professionals, gamers and really promote the neurodiversity movement as a whole.I like your idea about raising the visibility on these issues. I think it’s time to post some FAQ!! Thanks again.“

It’s really nice to see that they seem to be doing it right. (I hate it when I see a thing targeted at autistic people that looks like it might be really cool … and then I start looking at it and it’s the Autism Speaks type bullshit.)

I’m still just kind of inclined to dislike this because I automatically revolt at the idea that autistic kids need a separate version of something from other kids.
