I think about this chart all the time
The Mountain Goats - Thank You Mario But Our Princess is In Another Castle
John Darnielle describes the plot of the original Super Mario game and then sings a song about Toad's fears before he is rescued by Mario.
i miss them so bad
i love the two genre of mountain goats songs are like “i shot a guy in the face. and id do it again if i had to. that’s what loving you is like” and “i saw a monkey through the window. he waved at me. i didn’t know monkeys knew how to do that”
this comes across my dashboard every once in a while and I had forgotten about it, honestly, but here it is and I want you all to know this is one of the most important pieces of writing of all time hidden inside an ugly little jewel case of an album that most people don’t know exists is one of the most important pieces of writing of all time I will not stop crying about this it means more to me than any novel honestly “we may freeze but we will never go numb” tattooed on my body for life this is my everything
[image description: a photo of the inside notes from a CD of Full Force Galesburg, which read as follows:
“IF THERE IS ONE THING I LOVE it’s the weather this year: how it swings suddenly the wrong way just long enough to confuse the geese, who figure, what with the way the air’s warmed up on a given day, that winter’s over. North they go, and I hear them from where I am. They sing happily, flying in a looser formation than you’d think evolution would allow. They’re headed home.
A FEW DAYS LATER, OF COURSE, the elements remember what they’re about, and the clouds come closer to the earth than they should, and the fog hangs heavy on the ground, and I hear the sound again and look up: here they come again, flying much lower now and calling to one another for fear that one of them will get lost in their hasty retreat southward. It is now the middle of winter.
SOON IT WILL BE COLD ENOUGH to keep them south until the Spring thaw. It will be so cold that we will almost forget them. We will imagine that we have been this cold throughout our entire lives. We haven’t. One fine day they will soar through the skies above our small town again, heading North, and the full sun will be bright behind them. The humid air will stick to us like a death in the family. The geese will sing with a joy that even our dreams never approach.
WE MAY FREEZE, BUT WE WILL NEVER GO NUMB. In the summer we tend to forget this, and if an unexpected cold front frosts the crops we fear for our lives. We need not worry. The real danger lies, as we should have learned by now, elsewhere. There is a burning that not even a midwestern winter can kill.” end ID]
Back in 2006 when we shot the Woke Up New music video for the Mountain Goats, I wanted to also make something for my favorite song on the album, “Wild Sage.” So I shot John Darnielle singing the song in front of a black background, turned the footage black and white and high contrast, and printed out every frame of it on 8x10 paper. I then took these stacks of paper to Cape Cod and began to animate them as stills, shooting with my Canon 5D. It took much longer than I thought, and my vacation was over before the video was shot, so I took them back to NYC intending to finish the video there. I never did. So this is all there is.
The printouts somehow ended up in my cousin Nathan’s possession, and seven years later he found them stacked in a box and asked me what these thousands of bizarre photos of John Darnielle’s face were for.
And I said “oh yeah, that thing. I should upload it to Vimeo or something.”
always wondered if rian ever got around to finishing this. guess not. it’s okay, he’s been busy.
i never posted pics from this video shoot either. here’s one, rian at right, ace dp steve yedlin in the green shirt:
thing that always amuses me when i hear the recorded version of “wild sage” is the sole percussion part, which i played by rubbing a business card or something across a page of the garbage tom clancy book i was reading (and admittedly sort of enjoying) at the time. rainbow six. which now that i think about it was the videogame everyone was playing in the van on the last tour. so you see it all comes full circle.
let the record show that the year the mountain goats played “this year” live on the radio from a bar across the street from wrigley on opening day was the year the chicago cubs went to the world series for the first time in seventy-plus years
anyone else got a dull pain that they live with that isn't getting any duller or is is just me and the guy from the mountain goats
I just read the post from claremont cometh about peter's departure from the band. it is a really good post written by someone with decades more experience in both being a tmg fan and handling endings than I, and it is also making me cry again.
poll: should i make this my tumblr header image
