Exchanging gifts for the first time: E/R
(This one Fought Me for no reason I can discern, but hopefully it does the trick!)
It’s taken them several years to invent what Joly dramatically calls The Birthday Party, with the capital letters every time even though he’s a slow texter anyway. Five of them have birthdays in the baking-hot months of June and July, and there was a year or two full of bar crawls and restaurant meals and rooftop parties where they all reached August exhausted and a little sick of each other’s company, so when Jehan, whose birthday is last in the sequence, suggested they just have a joint party in July, everyone was relieved to agree.
And then everybody wanted to give gifts and it felt weird for half of them to be opening gifts and the other half not, and then they all looked at each other at their half-hearted Christmas gathering, a holiday none of them feels quite easy celebrating, and then The Birthday Party became what it is, a chance for everyone to pass things around. Nobody gets special gifts for everyone, with that many to buy, but they pass around fancy chocolate bars and bottles of craft cider and handmade cards and it’s good. It’s better than awkward parties focused around one person.
Grantaire loves The Birthday Party. It’s one of his favorite nights of the year, and he spends the weeks before it closeted in his apartment, soberer and happier than he usually is, making matched sets of little paintings of the Musain or caricatures of everyone or handcarved soap dishes.
It’s just that this year, he and Enjolras are dating.

Happy one year anniversary!
keep the cushions and the couch too, ok pal?
Not to be an unbearable plot tease, but I'm editing/rewriting a chapter from Hunger Pangs book 2, and while I adore all of my characters equally, Vlad and Ursula getting to know each other properly might actually be some of my favorite moments.
His realization that he can pester Ursula to tell him more about random historical events as they actually happened, not how they are portrayed in history books, is so, so sweet. He's like an excited labrador who just found a dinosaur bone.
Ursula's very much not used to this kind of attention.
She's used to people only being interested in her power. And here's a werewolf who couldn't give less of a fuck about exploiting her magic for his own gain, and a vampire who wants to ask her what textile production was like circa the fall of the Ecrecian Empire.
jenny & jeff! 300 words
Teddy cannot believe that he is friends with two brainiacs who like reading. He can't believe it because he's dumb. He's not good at school. He doesn't know how to write essays or analyze Martian poetry or do geometry in base 12 or any of that. And how does anyone keep up with all the reading Hephaestus gives them???
No one else has to get extra tutoring from Xavyn, or meditate with Professor Hephaestus in his study. (Everyone's casting wheel is, like, actually a wheel. Teddy's looks like the wheel of a bike after getting run over by a garbage truck.) Thank God Teddy is funny. Or at least Jenny and Eigan think he is. The least he can do is be entertaining while they go on to become rectors...make 'em laugh... Who else in the cohort can do a spot on impression of Hephaestus?
Jenny cannot believe she's friends with Teddy, who doesn't seem scared of anything or anyone, and Eigan—a prince. A prince! Eigan is so regal and proper and knows exactly what to do or say in every single situation. It's second nature to him—he could never look stupid. He was standoffish during those first months of the rite, and Jenny was intimidated by him. (A prince!) But once he got used to them, he was so kind.
Also, Jenny can't believe both of her best friends on this trip are...boys? Not like that matters, but every boy in high school looked at Jenny like she was this stuttering, socially-awkward, nerd. And she absolutely was. But she was taller than a lot of the boys too. She's so thankful that Teddy is taller than her and that Eigan's horns go over her head by an inch. She feels like she blends in when she's with them. She doesn't have to slouch.
Eigan cannot believe that he feels closer to two Terrestrials than he does to Forn. Well, not all the time, but much of the time, lately. But he would never tell Forn that, of course. His twin brother and the future king of Mars would be highly concerned if he heard Eigan talking this way about unruly creatures from Earth. (Forn completely understood why their Uncle Hephaestus voted against Terrestrial Enlightenment.)
When Eigan discovered his apprentice cohort would be comprised of Terrestrials, he asked a royal librarian for readings by the scholar Crucibus. Crucubius was Eigan's grandmother's strange brother, and also the father of Professor Hephaestus, but most importantly, the preeminent anthropologist of Mars. Eigan understands what Crucibus finds so compelling about humanity when he looks at Genevieve and Theodore. No one on Mars is as glowing as Jenny is when she talks about a novel she loves. No one on Mars is as fierce as Teddy when faced with an adversary. Eigan was always taught to value acute reason as the highest virtue...but lately his friends have made him question that.

Tres Horny Boys + Avi and Killian I’ve been obsessed with TAZ for roughly a month now and let me tell you something, it’s silly and stupid, but also unbelievably good and well written and sad and what the fuck I love it
Image description: digital art of assorted Adventure Zone characters. The first image shows a group hug between Taako, Magnus, and Merle, with Taako being a slim elf with brown skin and short blond hair, Magnus being a tall and chubby human with pale skin, ginger hair, and many scars, and Merle being a stout dwarf with dark brown skin and a white beard.
Magnus is smiling peacefully with one arm around Taako and another on Merle’s head, and Taako looks tired, but he’s smiling back. Merle’s chuckling as Magnus knocks his glasses askew. The next image shows Merle smiling and outstretching his arms welcomingly, followed by Magnus holding Steven the Goldfish and smiling.
Next is Avi, an olive-skinned human with black hair in a ponytail, crossing his arms and winking with a confident expression. The final drawing is a shoulders-up drawing of Killain, a green-skinned orc with long reddish-brown hair and an ear piercing. She’s grinning confidently. End description.
This came across as a real “family” episode, not just because we wrote it that way but because it was actually the first we shot without Gina being on set every day. The other cast members were genuinely uncomfortable at her absence. A lot of the emotions you’re seeing on screen were real.
