“Earn It.”, by Barry Windsor-Smith & Chris Claremont, with Letters by Tom Orzechowski.

In my opinion, this is the definitive statement on Wolverine’s morality. Two words: “Earn It”. Be worthy of respect. Be better. Earn your place in life. Earn it.

If Spider-Man’s essential message is “with great power comes great responsibility”, than Wolverine’s message is simple, “don’t dwell on the fuckups. Just be better. Earn the life you want.”

Earn it.

Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 # 205, “Wounded Wolf”, scripted by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith.

this is the issue where Wolverine fights Lady Deathstrike in the snow, while protecting Katy Power from Deathstrike and the Reavers. this issue also tells the origin of Lady Deathstrike, and it has some of the best fights you will ever see illustrated. Brutal, gory, and beautiful artwork throughout.

the ReColored version is from the Hardcover reprints of LIFEDEATH and LIFEDEATH II, and the new colors are by Thomas Mason. the last image is a finished cover concept that Barry and Chris ultimately decided not to use.

As usual with Barry, he is not a fan of people changing his artwork. you can mail him stuff to sign for $20.00 plus postage but I do not suggest sending him the hardcover where Thomas Mason’s colors appear. He will probably sign it, but it will piss him off, so please do not.

…And there’s the beautiful title page splash.

Wolverine, Vol. 2 # 37 Cover, TPB Cover and the Page 8 splash by Marc Silvestri, with Inks by Dan Green, Letters by Pat Brosseau, Colors by Glynis Oliver, and a Script by Larry Hama. New colors for the TPB cover by Thomas Mason.

Wolverine and Puck get sucked into a wormhole or something and wind up fighting Lady Deathstrike and a bunch of Nazis during the Spanish Civil War. Ernest Hemingway guest-stars in the book. Lots of fun.

Modern coloring helped in no way.

Yeah, and Barry HATES the new colors too. Like, he won’t sign the hardcovers that reprint those books.

Gotta love the fact that both the published and rejected cover concepts are basically just examples of Barry flexing his figure drawing on everyone else in the comics field. And he is STILL spoken of with a god-like reverence.

Bonus:

The title page process. All Barry.

Character Design sketches and models for Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers.

“And I become the storm, channelling its force into the ranks of chaos… transforming their numbers into self-imposed barriers… Striking as the Lightning Strikes… And Whirling as the Wind…”

Opus, Vol. 1, Pages 62-63. Barry Windsor-Smith compiled the two volumes of ‘Opus’ as a retrospective of his career as an artist, illustrator, and storyteller. The bottom left of page 62 identifies the Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers designs as being from 1986. My guess for the reasoning behind signing and dating it as being from 1990 is that he was looking for old drawings and he found this in 1990. “Opus, Vol. 1” was the first time this drawing (Pg. 63) was published.

Wolverine Vs. Lady Deathstrike | Marc Silvestri

When was this???

<p>Wolverine, Vol. 2 # 37 cover, with Inks by Dan Green, and a Script by Larry Hama. this is one of my favorite classic story arcs. Wolverine and Puck get sucked through a wormhole and team-up with Ernest Hemingway against Lady Deathstrike and the Nazis during the Spanish Civil War. Seriously: Ernest Hemingway is in a lot of this 3 issue story arc. Great read.

Thanks for the info! That’s awesome :D

No worries!

It’s Saturday, please go to your LCS and look through the quarter bins for these issue #s 35-37 of Wolverine, Vol. 2. Probably will be in the quarter bins, or check the back issue bins in general. They are from the early ‘90s, so they should be cheap.

My preferred version is the black and white reprints from the Essential Wolverine. Volume 2 of the Essential Series has all of the Larry Hama/Marc Silvestri run, and it ROCKS.

I think an omnibus of the Larry Hama/Marc Silvestri Wolverine was recently published too, and it is very worth owning.

Whatever your budget, please support your local comic book store!

*shameless plug time* And, um, you might wanna follow me for a bit. I am pretty sure you will like my blog, especially if you like what WestCoastAvengers does, because his blog rocks and he and I have been following each other for a while now!
