Summer fun with the X-Men by Kaare Andrews in an interconnecting series of variant covers from Unknown Comics that was also published as a Marvel Signature Print as a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive (2024)

Kaare Andrews is better at doing 90s X-Men than Jim Lee ever was.

His characters look unique. They don’t look like a guy copying every popular artist that came before him and then mashed together. Kaare’s work looks like he grew up loving this stuff, but has a unique take on them.

Why do I shit on Jim Lee? Because his work is dull. It sells unbelievably well, and his success is a high water mark for the industry. But his work looks like it belongs on a lunchbox, not telling a story.

Amazing Fantasy: Infinity Comic Prelude #1 (2021)

by Kaare Andrews

Goddamn.

Wolverine gets thought of as a cliche these days. But then you read stuff written by people that know how to write him you get reminded why he’s so popular.

This was a gut punch.

Chris Claremont said it perfectly in an interview. Wolverine is a failed Samurai. For a samurai, the only thing that can regain one’s honor after failure is seppuku. Suicide. But Wolverine cannot die. So he is forever tortured as the imperfect man that is trying to be better. Maybe the best character concept in the last 50 years. It easily becomes a cliched action movie story, but the core concept is solid gold. And scenes like this prove it.
