Thor vs Superman by Bruce Timm
Purely opinion. Thor is Marvel’s closest analog to the Superman. By analog, I mean that there is very little that Thor or Superman are said to be “unable” to do. Thor is as powerful or strong as he needs to be, just like Superman.
That being said, I like the drawing.
And in a fight, I’d give the edge to Thor because of his powers are based in both magic and a different plane of reality, whether that be DC or a Marvel Universe, Thor is still a God. And more important than his physical strength is the various abilities he has with Mjolnir. Over the years, Mjolnir has been used in so many different ways that it needs it’s own tumblr to keep track of them.
I’d say the Sentry would be THE fighter against Superman.
The Sentry is many things. Ultimately, he is the product of a gimmicky stunt from 2000 that Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee managed quite well. Once Bendis put him on the Avengers, a second mini was produced with Jenkins writing for John Romita, Jr. Those two minis and Bendis’ Dark Avengers established the Sentry as what he is today: A Miracleman/SHAZAM pastiche who’s alter ego is a drug-addicted paranoid schizophrenic.
That makes the Sentry a whopper of a problem… But not the equal of Superman or Thor.
I get what you’re saying, but I completely disagree.
Likewise.
Avengers: Assemble
Somebody swallowed teeth after this image took place. Well, a lot of somebodies. Most of them not in this image. Whatever. Go read Siege.
Ares vs. the Sentry by Olivier Coipel
People give me weird looks when I say that the Sentry is the best character created in the last 15 years.
What makes me say that is the fact that a great character does not necessarily have a scary power set -but the Sentry's powers just allowed him to rip the actual God of War in half like he was stick of celery- its not necessary. What makes him great is that he is a lens. He is a magnifying glass on the characters around him. Look what happened when he was on the Avengers:
Steve Rogers got Bob Reynolds to help, Tony Stark used him to help enforce the Registration, and Norman Osborne used him to enforce his rule of the country. Steve wanted a secret weapon to help the most people. Tony wanted a secret weapon to win an argument. Norman wanted a secret weapon to control the world.
He is a lens.
Tom Hanks once told someone that Fame does not change you, it just magnifies who you are. Bob Reynolds was a stupid junkie that stole a formula that magnified who he is 1,000,000 times. The result is that he is a character that does the same thing to everyone around him. It is why he locked himself up. He knew that people would want to him to help, and that it would become the situation at the end of Siege. He knew it, but it happened anyway.
Joe Quesada is freaking awesome. -Creation Process for Amazing Spider-Man #700 -Origin #3 -Origin #2 -Origin #1 -Ultimate X-Men #1 -Supreme Power cover -Connected Siege Variants -Wolverine: Origins #5 (Joe has done a LOT of Mucha inspired work)
