Action Comics, Vol. 1 # 844 and Batman, Vol. 1 # 655 had Variant Covers drawn by both of the Kubert Brothers. Adam and Andy Kubert going exclusive for DC Comics was big news back in 2006. Adam was gonna draw Superman, with a Script by Richard Donner and Geoff Johns. And Andy started his tenure on Batman, with a Script by Grant Morrison. To celebrate, the brothers did variant covers for each other’s books.

Andy’s variant cover for Action Comics was Inked by Jesse Delperdang, and Colored by Moose Baumann.

Adam was working in mixed media a lot around that time, and he did all of the Action Comics covers for his run in this same style, on that same sepia/brownish butcher paper. All of his Superman covers were published as-is too - just mixed media on brown paper. Pretty stuff. His Batman variant is one of my favorite images he’s ever created.

Adam Kubert’s cover artwork for his “Last Son” storyline in Action Comics, with a Script by Richard Donner and Geoff Johns.

This story, is -basically- what Richard Donner wanted to do for his third Superman movie. the studio disagreed, Donner got fired, and we got Richard Pryor as a computer hacker guy instead. Last Son is the series where Christopher Kent debuted in the comics. Adam got very, very sick during his time working on this book, so there was a 4 month hiatus in his run. 844-846, and then 4 months later was Action 851, and everything that happened in the Phantom Zone in that issue was in 3-D. The story concluded with Action Comics Annual # 11, which had a regular and a variant cover, both by Adam.

Action Comics Annual # 10 is a gem. An absolute gem:

-a Silver/Bronze Throwback Cover, illustrated in Pencil by Adam Kubert, with Inks by Joe Kubert.

-“the Many Deaths of Superman” was a short story told entirely from Lex Luthor’s point of view, and it features him fantasizing about all the different ideas he has to kill Superman. And Arthur Adams illustrated it!

-Rags Morales illustrated the Origin of Non. Non -for those wondering- is the giant, mute Kryptonian Criminal that helps Zod fight Superman in Richard Donner’s “Superman II”, starring Christopher Reeve.

There was other stuff in this pamphlet of joy too, so please go track it down and see what I mean!

Superman and Lois Lane | Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

Not sure if I’ve ever said this before but this moment—this KISS—is one of my favorite kisses ever in any Superman property. I think it’s because HE can’t get through it. It’s just too hard. And so she is actually the one comforting him here and kissing him. They are both trying to stay strong for each other and he is having a hard time so she just steps up with that Lois confidence to try and make him OK. It’s painfully sad and it’s not the happy ending I long for (and thankfully got in other media and comics) for these characters but it’s just so beautiful and poignant. Chris and Margot’s tender chemistry was just so profound. I genuninely can’t think of another superhero movie with a romantic moment this simple and yet so clearly about the sweet pleasure and pain of love.

I have my issues with the Richard Donner Cut, but the portrayal of Lois Lane was wonderful.

To date, Richard Donner is the only guy to direct a good, live-action Superman movie.

Christopher Reeve is who I see in my head when I picture Supeman. And Superman sounds like a mixture of Tim Daly and Christopher Reeve. Well, Superman sounds like Tim Daly and Clark Kent sounds like Christopher Reeve.

I honestly never liked Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, but that is just me.

I agree about the kiss though. It is this kiss, and the one from All-Star Superman # 03 that stand out as the best Super Kiss moments between these two.
