Numismatics is the study of currency, money, and its uses thereof. U.S. Currency is noteworthy for several reasons:

(ha! “note” worthy! Get it? It’s another of my famous puns. You lucky, lucky bastards…)

Anyways: -Did you know that US currency is the only money where the notes are all the same size? People in Europe refer to USD as “Monopoly Money” for that reason. Seriously.

-Since 1969, the largest denomination in circulation of US currency is the $100 Note. On top of that, there are far more people in the U.S. than there are $100 notes. Consequently, whenever you use a $100 note, most people would be smart enough to verify the authenticity of the note!

So, starting from the top:

-Yup. The first issuing note of $100 from the U.S. Treasury featured Lincoln on the note. It was in 1862, one year before his assassination, and in the midst of the Civil War.

-The next series was put into Circulation in 1870. It featured Senator Thomas Hart Benton (Missouri) on the note. He was most closely associated with the “Manifest Destiny” idea of westward expansion. Also, do you see where it says “GOLD” all over the note? US Currency is ensured in value by our stores of gold bullion, which are kept in places like Fort Knox, Kentucky or the Federal Reserve Bank, in NYC.

-1914 Was the first time Benjamin Franklin made his appearance on the note. That is Independence Hall on the back (it is where the Liberty Bell is: in Philly.)

-1966 Was the next series. I kinda like the typography on that note. It is kinda cool looking. It also has a new seal of the US Treasury, and the Latin has been replaced with English. It was issued because of a bunch of changes internally, and because of a decrease in the amount of currency in circulation.

-Series 2006A was the next release of the note. It was actually released in 1996, but was renamed the 2006A because it underwent numerous changes to stop counterfeiting efforts.

-the most current version of the currency from 2009. Current Currency designs are often subject to recalls, modifications, and so forth. (Current Currency is the correct terminology. it is also alliterative, with the same root for each word. Do you KNOW what that means? It means that I have given you lucky bastards TWO examples of my stunning word-play, in only one post! You guys hit the freaking jackpot with me!) The 2009 series was DESIGNED in 2009, but was released in 2011, recalled and replaced with an uncolored version (some kind of problem with creasing), and the next series is set to be released in October of 2013.

It is actually kind of interesting, when you read about it. Also, look at world currency pictures at some point. They’re often quite beautiful. Another thing to look for: in the UK, Coins issued with the Portrait of the Queen are issued with her age correct for the date of issue. So, the first coins released under her reign showed a young woman. Now, they show her to have aged quite considerably.

“Money doesn’t buy happiness” ok and poverty buys what exactly

where is the lie

Out of poverty creates strength and compassion. It’s weird how that works.

i sure wasn’t feeling the strength when i was skipping class because i was too weak to walk there after going 2-3 days without food, and i definitely wasn’t compassionate when i was checking every time i walked home to see if there was an eviction notice on the door. stop trying to fucking make it seem like a good thing.

Poverty is not a virtue.  It doesn’t make you a better person.  Poverty doesn’t make you “strong and compassionate” it makes you insecure and stressed the fuck out.  Poverty makes it so you can’t live your life without the everything being undercut by fear.  It makes you hard and angry.  We need to do away with the bullshit myth that being poor is somehow better for you as a person.  You know who wants you to believe that?  Rich people, so you don’t question them.

^^^^

Poverty literally kills you

Money can’t necessarily buy happiness, but poverty can absolutely prevent it.

Agreed.

Money does not buy happiness. Money just gives you choices. Poverty means your entire life is focused around food and shelter, and that is it.

A Bit of Trivia: Fan of The Fifth Element? Next time you watch it, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for copies of Viz’s old ‘96 release of Osamu Tezuka’s Adolf (better known now as Message to Adolf, currently released by Vertical, Inc) as well as volume 3 of Sho Fumimura & Ryoichi Ikegami’s Yakuza classic Sanctuary. Good to know that even in 2263, people still care about the classics!

Whoa!

This movie just earned some major cool points in my book. Nice choices, I especially love Adolf.

A bit more trivia: Luc Besson based the sets, costume designs, worlds, and even vehicles designed by the late Jean Giraud, aka "Moebius". Giraud brought multiple lawsuits to bear, but Besson had more money for lawyers. The movie still does not give proper credit to Giraud's 'Incal' and 'Air Tight Garage' work published in Heavy Metal, in France.

Some Chris-Craft boats -the Top one is from 1947 -the next is from 1957 -I don't know the year for the last one, but the model is called "Commander" Remember those beautiful boats from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"? Chris-Craft is the American-Made version, and they date back to the 20s or 30s. These babies are worth a LOT of money, and they are highly collectible. Personally, I like looking at them like this. I have experience with being on and around boats, and I can tell you a few things: -That dark, beautiful wood is a jungle hardwood called "Teak". Really expensive lawn furniture in the South is made from it, and people with enough money put it on Boats. It looks really pretty, and it holds it's color for a long time. It's just good material. It's also a Jungle Hardwood. That means it costs a lot of money. A board about 10 feet long and 1.5 feet wide, cut from a single tree with no knots or anything can cost around $10,000.00 I'm not kidding. Those Chris-Craft boats not only had Teak, Pine, and Oak. They also had Chrome all over it. The number one corrosive element for Wood and Metal is salt. Salt water is in the ocean. That means that whenever the boat goes out into the ocean, you have to wash the entire boat down with fresh water, and soap it about once a week. The boat also has to be dry-docked during the winter months. Not just the water temperature. The bottom of the boat (the Hull) has to be scraped off and completely repainted. As the boat runs through the water, it collects crap like barnacles on the hull. These slow the boat down, and corrode the hull. (They gotta come off.) So, in conclusion: Chris-Craft boats are too fucking expensive to ever want to rationally buy. But, they're really pretty.
