Spawn, Vol. 1 # 179, illustrated by Mike Mayhew, with interior colors by Andy Troy, and a script by David Hine.
Back in 1982, Fantagraphics published The X-Men Companion. This book printed interviews by Claremont, Cockrum, and others, giving you a behind the scenes knowledge of the X-Men, by the creators who were making the books.
The cover was provided by Michael Golden
Some years later, Art Adams created one of his many amazing homages to classic Marvel covers. I’m not exactly sure when, but I first found it posted in 2012 over at the site of marvel1980s. I instantly fell in love with it, and even made a post about it on my blog. It’s a killer piece.
Which takes me to today. I was reading Axel in Charge, over cbr and saw this is going to be the Art Adams variant to Uncanny X-Men 600
On one hand, its an awesome piece of Art Adams X-Men work, and I’m glad more people are going to see it.
On the other, This is Uncanny X-Men 600, and Marvel didn’t even commission a brand new piece of art for their most monumental X-men book ever, by an artist with such historical significance to the line of titles. The art provided should have been more special. It should have been original.
But that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
I kinda wish that Marvel went with the Golden version, as awesome as the Arthur Adams reinterpretation is. If Marvel was gonna publish an older cover, at least use the original version. Just my opinion.
Also, the colorist put yellow trunks on Colossus.
And that detail bothers me a lot more than it probably should.
At least then, it would have been drawn by the guy who had the creative vision for the image. This situation reeks of calling it in, on all fronts. How did it keeping getting through the approval process? Also, I did not notice the yellow shorts until you commented on them.
Those yellow shorts stick out bad now that you mentioned them…
Exactly my points.
Mike Golden has been doing more digital work as of late anyways. So asking him to recolor his original art would have been awesome.
But, I must confess, I would love it if Dean White, Dan Brereton, Richard Isanove, Mike Mayhew, or Marte Gracia colored the Golden Art. All of those guys are phenomenal artists and colorists in their own right. I would love to see a painterly take on the colors is my point.
Art Adams has more direct history with the X-Men, which I totally get. So, why not use Art's recreation of his Classic X-Men cover? I mean, if they want a vintage cover redone by Art Adams, pick the one that Art did in the first place!
I don't think the situation was "called in". I think this cover is the result of Marketing making a decision that supersedes editorial influence. Mike Golden is awesome, but somebody crunched the numbers and decided that the Art Adams cover was a better selling point. I will be fine with it, so long as they change his shorts. It looks really off. My attention is specifically drawn to them, and it should not be, and that is why I mentioned it in the first place. As soon as you posted the cover I noticed the yellow trunks and it just struck me as odd.
