the Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 5 # 50 by Francis Manapul, with Inks by John Livesay, Colors by J.D. Smith, and Jim Shooter wrote the Script.

find trade reprints of the Manapul/Shooter Legion book if you can, because it is one of the better Legion books I have ever read. Shooter made a name for himself writing the Legion back in the ‘70s, and he returned to the title on the condition that Francis would pencil the book, and it was a really great trip. Reading the Legion by Shooter will make you realize why he got popular in the first place. And Francis was the perfect fit for the tone of the book.

the Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 5 # 37 by Francis Manapul, with Inks by John Livesay, Colors by J.D. Smith, and this issue kicked off the return of Jim Shooter as the writer of the Legion. He and Francis would collaborate until this volume’s finale, issue # 50.

I am reblogging this because most of the comics fans I know that have never gotten into the Legion give a version of the same answer as to why they never took an interest: there is a LOT of Legion backstory out there. It's like jumping into the Uncanny X-Men, as a new reader. It can be hard to figure out if you are gonna like the series or not, especially when you feel like it will somehow obligate you to read 50 years of backstory to know what is going on.

Well, Jim Shooter and Francis Manapul collaborated for the Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 5 #s 37-50, and it was with the specifically stated intent of being new-reader friendly. If you are looking for a jumping on-point, this run is an excellent choice. You can worry about reading the Great Darkness Saga some other time if you really want to do so, but these 14 issues were an awesome ride.
