more Frank Quitely artwork.
JLA: Earth 2 by Frank Quitely and Grant Morrison, with Colors by Laura Martin.
There are those who say that Mr Frank Quietly’s art is ‘ugly’ and ‘lumpy’ - they are completely missing the point; Mr Quietly’s art is the illustration equivalent of that homely old character actor who comes onscreen, absolutely makes the movie, then walks away leaving the latest bright young things to look pretty dull by contrast.
If I meet someone who criticizes Frank Quitely’s artwork, I immediately realize that I have encountered a fan who is new to the medium, and does not understand the artform. Frank Quitely is arguably the best of his generation. He’s certainly at the forefront of modern artists in the field.
Looking at his early work for newspaper strips in Scotland, his foundations are in storytelling and body language, not action, muscles, and babes with big boobs. His draftsmanship in general is pretty much peerless amongst his contemporaries. And it’s quite telling that he works almost exclusively in pencil at this point. His work is clean and elegant. The figures and especially the faces are -at first- idiosyncratic. But, after a while, you start to just adjust to it and you realize how good he is.
In my opinion, Frank Quitely is the modern equivalent to Barry Windsor-Smith. He’s technically brilliant in all areas of comic book creation, but his main interests seem to be in rendering body language and non-verbal story telling. Just like Barry. He’s about as fast as Barry was too, to be honest.
Crime Syndicate of Amerika: CUI BONO by Frank Quitely, with Letters by Ken Lopez, Colors by Laura Martin, and a Script by Grant Morrison.
Last thing I'll say about the Crime Syndicate before I'll shut up is this. Grant Morrison seeded the idea that on Earth-3, evil wins. The Justice League may lose battles but ultimately they win the war. The villains always lose. And really good villains like Lex Luthor or The Flash's rogue have some sort of flaw that will always prevent them from totally winning. On their own turf, not the Crime Syndicate. Justice League's powers are just insanely good at crime.
right. that was one of my favorite aspects of that story. It was sort of built into the nature of that second earth that evil always wins... similar to the nature of the main DC universe, wherein good always ultimately prevails.
that and any time Morrison and Quietly get together on a project it ends up pure gold.
My favorite part of it was the palpable despair that Luthor and Joker felt about their fight against the Crime Syndicate of Amerika. Luthor was still Luthor. Desperate to prove to the world that he was the real Superman they had been searching for. And he still kept losing.
That moral reversal was what made the JLA: Earth 2 book so, so good. And, it is what weakened the credibility of the Crisis on Multiple Earths film for me. The animated feature did away with the best part of the whole thing in favor of a straight forward good guys versus bad guys punch-em up. There were good moments, to be sure - James Woods as Owlman absolutely stole the show - but the movie lacked the moral nuances of the Graphic Novel, and I was bummed.
On Earth 3, being “bad” is what being “good” on Earth 1 is. So Ultraman being himself on Earth 3 was still a version of Superman, just with an inverted morality. That nuance was lost in the animated feature. And I was bummed out by that. It’s kind of the turning point for me when the DCAU films started to be more hit and miss.
I mean they included flashbacks to all their backstories save Superwoman. Even Johnny Quick's girlfriend got an origin. Maybe I'm biased cuz Superwoman in particular is one of my favorites but it seems sexist to me. Oh well can't cry about it. Just gotta read more of those dastardly Crime Syndicate comics.
Yeah, the Crime Syndicate is a way cool group of baddies and you can look forward to Owlman being the cut-out villain of the day tomorrow and Power Ring on Friday.
Still looking forward to reading Forever Evil, but sorry to hear Super Woman got the short shift in the story department...
Have you seen the Crisis on Multiple Earths animated feature with Gina Torres voicing Super Woman? It’s a great watch.
Crisis on Multiple Earths was a lot of fun, and Dwayne McDuffie’s voice is sorely missed. And as good as Gina Torres was as Super Woman? Well, James Woods as Owlman was AMAZING.
But.
