“Stone Cold Crazy”, live at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, featuring James Hetfield singing with Queen and Tony Iommi (from Black Sabbath) playing.
“Damage Case & Too Late Too Late”, with Lemmy. Live.
James and Lars look like little kids getting to hang with their hero.
“Sabbra Cadabra”, live in Manhattan 1998.
This is the last time Jason played with the band as a member.
“Whiskey in the Jar”, live at Slane Castle in Ireland.
Garage, Inc., 1998
This was a cover song compilation album. I previously mentioned that the $5.98 EP should be skipped because it’s on here. All of the singles I listed previously? The B sides of those singles show up here. I’m not shitting on it. This is a great record with a lot of good tracks. A decided improvement from Load & Reload.
Lars Ulrich is a MASSIVE Motorhead fanboy. He was *literally* the president of the fan club. He partied with Lemmy backstage once when he was like 15-16, and puked on Lemmy. Lars WORSHIPS Motorhead. (You should too, to be honest. Lemmy is a God!). Two Motorhead songs show up on this record. Of the two, Metallica does a better version of “Damage Case”. Something about their version of “Overkill” bugs me.
The Misfits show up too. Cliff Burton LOVED the Misfits. Picture a shitty VW Bus in the late 70s-Early 80s San Francisco. Ok, is it shitty and sketch as fuck? Yeah, that was Cliff’s ride. He also used his hands to drum on that resin steering wheel. Lars and James used to hear him coming from blocks away. Cliff apparently beat that steering wheel so hard that it had dents in it. They could hear Cliff coming down the block. Blaring the Misfits and beating the fuck out of the steering wheel of his shitbox VW Bus.
The “Turn the Page” cover came about because Lars heard Bob Seger’s version and knew that James would kill it. And Lars was right.
“Whiskey in the Jar” is a classic Irish Bar song. Like, going back to the 1700s classic. Metallica’s version is their cover of Thin Lizzy’s version. Yes, Thin Lizzy. That shitty “The Boys are Back In Town Again” song that everyone hates. Irish Band with a black singer from the 1970s. Black Irish guy fronting a rock band from Ireland in the 1970s... Dude had a set of nuts on him.
So, yeah, Metallica’s cover of “Whiskey in the Jar” is their version of Thin Lizzy’s version.
I own this record on vinyl. It’s a banger.
Metallica plays “Whiskey in the Jar” every time they’re touring Europe, starting with Slane Castle in Meath, Ireland. It’s a crowd roaring good time.
The singles are great. “Whiskey in the Jar” is the standout.
The other tracks you should hear are their cover of Ozzy’s lovesong - Black Sabbath’s “Sabra Cadabra”, their cover of Motörhead’s “Damage Case”, and lastly it should be noted that James sang the vocals for “Stone Cold Crazy” at the live Freddie Mercury tribute concert.
“Sabbra Cadabra”, covered by Metallica.
Performed live in NYC, Thanksgiving 1998.
