On Writing.

“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ― Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” ― Ernest Hemingway

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.” ― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” ― Stephen King

“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.” ― Robert Frost

“Read, read, read. Read everything — trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it. Then write. If it’s good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.” ― William Faulkner

“Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” ― Anton Chekhov

“Tomorrow may be hell, but today was a good writing day, and on the good writing days nothing else matters.” ― Neil Gaiman

“Writing is like sex. First you do it for love, then you do it for your friends, and then you do it for money.” ― Virginia Woolf

“I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things I’m afraid of. ” ― Joss Whedon

“The scariest moment is always just before you start.” ― Stephen King, On Writing

“Write the kind of story you would like to read. People will give you all sorts of advice about writing, but if you are not writing something you like, no one else will like it either.” ― Meg Cabot

“A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.” ― Thomas Mann, Essays of Three Decades

“My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres; it’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you’re lucky.” — Alan Moore

“Art, as I see it, is any human activity which doesn’t grow out of either of our species’ two basic instincts: survival and reproduction.”

Douglas Adams wrote that the reasoning behind Alien Abduction is equivalent to High School seniors playing pranks after graduation. I am inclined to believe in that theory. An interstellar being came all the way to Earth, just to pick up a couple of cows, hikers, hippies, and hicks? I don't think so. I think it's far more likely that an advanced civilization thinks our planet is full of dumb monkeys that can't even get a manned space-flight beyond our own moon, and we've been the dominant species for about a hundred thousand years. I think the aliens are coming here to heckle us, is the point.
