written by Stan Lee art by Don Heck, Dick Ayers, & Stan Goldberg
I always liked it when Doom was portrayed as a good and fair ruler to the people of Latveria. Sure, Doom is an absolute jerk in person, but I always liked the idea of him being a freely chosen leader for his people. It makes his homeland that much more of an impediment for people that oppose him. Rather than as a small Eastern-European nation full of cowering peasants, I like to think of Latveria as sort of like Transylvania meets Wakanda, with Doom’s tech behind everything. Like his version of a perfect society. A feudal lord living with his adoring and well-cared for subjects. a model of Machiavelli’s proposed outlines for effective leadership.
naturally, disobedient servants and malcontents would be dealt with using Doom’s typically efficient and merciless methods. but I like the idea that everyone else in Latveria is happy about living there.
