Berni Wrightson’s cover art for Marvel Graphic Novel # 22: “the Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky”, by Susan K. Putney.
Well, gijoe-forever, pull up a chair for second or two.
Despite what Bernie drew, he was a sweetheart of a guy. Apparently, he met Susan K. Putney at a comic book store he frequented, and they hit it off as friends. As a favor to her, Bernie pitched the project to Marvel for their prestige bound Marvel Graphic Novel series. (The Death of Captain Marvel was one of the first in that series. X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills was another one.) Oversized and printed with a square binding. That’s “prestige bound”. It might have been a hardcover first. I forget.
Anyways. If you get a chance, you should search my archives because Bernie drew the shit out of this book. And that’s about the end of the positive feedback that it got. It didn’t sell particularly well, and it was not part of the Spider-Man continuity at the time. It’s a pretty book that Bernie worked on to help his friend get her career going. I have not heard of Susan K Putney in the comics world except in reference to this book.
