Rainy Season - Morpheus x Reader

[Spoilers for Brief Lives I guess?]

SUMMARY: Fed up with Dream's stubborn and at times childish attitude, you leave Dreaming. But when Morpheus's sorrow makes itself known, Matthew has to fetch you before the kingdom completely floods.

WORDCOUNT: ~ 1.7k

It’s a tumultuous morning in the Dreaming. Even if none of the dreams and nightmares are privy to the ongoing feud, they know something is wrong. It’s as though the air in the kingdom, the marrow of their bones, turned bitter last night. Their skin is crawling but the sun is shining as it did yesterday. They birds chirp the same song they had throughout centuries. And yet, against their better judgment, something is terribly out of place.

To be honest, you don’t even remember how all of this started but the damage is already done.

A frustrated scream ripples through your chest, "The world doesn't revolve around you!" You're fuming. There's only so much patience one person can hold and recently, Morpheus had proven himself exceptional at trying to reach its limit until he, unfortunately, succeeded today. "For someone who's supposed to know every thought ever entertained, you sure can not look past the tip of your own nose."

Today I started packing up to move back into the dorm and start my third year at the university. I didn't know where to start so the first things I packed were 3 The Sandman volumes and Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.

Will it help me learn psychometry, psychiatry and neuropsychology? No. Will it help me not lose my mind reading awful textbooks? Definitely.

Rainy Season - sneak peek

[Brief Lives spoilers I guess?]

Repetitive tapping on the window diverts your attention from the dishes you were washing. Seeing the black bird sitting on the outside windowsill, you quickly wipe your hands against the dishrag and jog to open the window.

"Matthew?" you ask in surprise.

He wastes no time pleading his case. "You gotta go back to him. Everything's gone to shit."

You furrow your eyebrows. Leaning against the wall, you cross your arms on your chest. "What do you mean?"

The raven hops closer to you. "It's been pouring nonstop since you left. He's just standing there, soaking wet and he won't talk to anyone."

"How bad is it?"

"How bad?!" Matthew screeches. "The House of Mysteries is so flooded, Abel is fishing."

It sounds like 'bad' is nothing more than an elegant euphemism. A weird sting appears in your chest - did your departure really mean that much to him?

"I'm assuming that's not a usual feature."

"Yeah," he answers sarcastically.

Matthew glares at you in anticipation. Perplexed, you rub your arm without thinking much about it. Right, it's the mature and responsible thing to do but at the same time, why do you have to be the one to cave in every time you two fall out?

The raven cocks his head. Something about the look in his eyes changes as though his frustration has faded away or grown into desperation if not powerlessness.

"Alright, let's go," you say with a sigh. "But no promises. I still have pride and self-respect and he's still a stubborn..." you take a deep breath, "nevermind. Let's just go."

Returning customer - Morpheus x Witch!Reader

SUMMARY: That strange, brooding customer is back and, just as you wished, no children or curses are involved. Your new neighbours make themselves known.

WORDCOUNT: ~ 1.4k

“Sir, unless you provide me with proper documents, I can’t sell you a Liverstone. That’s the law,” you explain slowly. There is hardly a simpler way to get your point across. Nevertheless, the man seems to miss it entirely. In turn, his lack of understanding makes you miss the bright ringing of the doorbell as someone has just walked into the store.

“Come on, lady.” Here comes another pitiful shot at haggling. “Do I look like a maniac? I’m not going to do anything stupid or illegal with it.” Interesting that he would suggest such a course of events when you haven’t even pointed to a suspicion of this kind. People often say that it is the thief who is most afraid of being robbed. Perhaps folk wisdom isn’t always wrong.

Imagine Dream and Desire having a competition over who can make you part of their kingdom. - Part 2

1100 words left.

You're about to read through the 'method' part of the article, when someone sits across from you. A rosy, sweet and spicy aroma hits your nostrils. Surprised and slightly annoyed at the disturbance, you look up.

It's strange. They're strange but not in the wrong way. Blond hair, red suit, heavy jewellery - they look out of place in a small cafe filled with university students drinking vegan chai lattes while swearing at engineering software. The stranger smiles and you doubt you’ve ever seen a more show-stopping person. There’s something unordinary about their features: they’re neither male nor female and yet both of them at the same time; the person across from you has the potential to be whatever you want to be.

~Morpheus, in the forest, with a crystal~

~The Doctor (whichever you like), in the TARDIS, with an hourglass~

Avatar

You can only guess what Morpheus had in mind when he said he had something to show you because he sure is silent during the hike through the forest, walking a few meters ahead of you. Despite two silver moons hanging high in the sky, it's hard to see the crowns of the pine trees making up the forest. Their black needles simply merge with the starry sky, yearning to become one with the pink and green faraway nebula.

The only reason you were yet to trip over your own feet was the strange species of flowers that grew as a ground cover. They resembled foxglove but at the same time nothing like the flowers you had seen back home. First and foremost, the flora of this queer forest was glowing. The tiny purple 'lanterns' lit the way between the pine trees.

Looking at Morpheus's back, you can't help but get the impression that he's looking for something. What exactly he's after, you can't even begin to guess. Moreover, it's not like he had given you even the smallest of hints before making you hike through this strange woodland realm.

Suddenly, he stops walking. Leaning down, he seems to be plucking something from inside of the bell-shaped violet flowers. You crane your neck to see what got him so interested but the solution to this mystery is soon presented to you:

Morpheus turns around. There's a round, glowing crystal in his hands. It reminds you of a garnet. At first, he doesn't say anything. He reaches for your palm, putting the gem in your hand and closing your fingers around it. The crystal feels pleasantly toasty to the touch.

His dark eyes bore into yours. The purple reflections of the glowing flowers dance across his irises and for a moment you wonder whether he has ever looked more wondrous than now. "Whatever darkness dares to look at you, may you always tread in light, my love," Morpheus says in a firm tone.

Gently pulling your hands towards his face, he places a warm kiss across your knuckles.

You can't quite put a finger on it but you have a feeling it's more of an oath rather than a wish.

Unwanted Guests: Crescendo | Morpheus x Reader

[WARNING: kidnapping, spoilers for 'Season of Mists']

{'Unwanted Guests: Diminuendo' - No longer in possession fo the key to Hell, Morpheus must think of another way to get you back.}

@padsfirewhisky was worried something else would have happend, so I'm doing just that hihi

SUMMARY: You had left to take care of a few things in the Waking World shortly before Morpheus reluctantly welcomes various envoys interested in the key to Hell. He doesn't think much of your absence - that is until Azazel reveals a vital detail.

WORDCOUNT: ~ 1k

Missing someone was not an unfamiliar sensation to Dream. In fact, there were a lot of people he missed, although one might wonder whether he didn't actually miss how serene life appeared when they were next to him. The case of you was only marginally different - your absence made Dreaming feel unbearably empty on top of this well-known loneliness weighing him down once more.

Morpheus thought that for the time being, making his palace smaller would cure the sorrow of his heart even slightly but no matter how closely the white walls came towards one another, it was still so... empty. The castle had been gradually shrunk to maybe 1/3 of its original size and yet his steps echoed throughout the long halls as though his own home betrayed him to constantly accentuate your absence. With a defeated sigh, he had to accept that it wasn't the vacancy of the palace that bothered him but the unfillable hole in his heart left by a vital piece you had taken the day you left for the Waking World.

I’m planning on getting a small tattoo of the word Endless on my arm (mainly for the sandman lol) and I was wondering what you think Morpheus’ reaction would be seeing it on me after I got it for him? (I think he’d be obsessed/fluffy and I want to see this scenario so bad). PS. If you decide to write this thank you so much!!!

A/N: This has immaculate dark!Morpheus vibes, so I'm going to stick with that. On a side note: I've scarcely updated lately but I'm making the most of my break before the next term starts.

The tattoo feels itchy. You move around your arm a bit trying to ease the uncomfortable feeling. It doesn’t work as well as you’d like it to. Maybe putting on more Tattoo Goo will help but that is going to have to wait.

“I’ve got something to show you,” you announce cheerfully. Morpheus raises his eyebrows curiously. If he did notice your strange fidgeting, for some reason he is unwilling to mention it, yet.

This might seem like an odd request, but I'm gathering up my courage to ask anyway.

Could you perhaps do a writing where the reader is a very good person, but has a horrific past.

Corinthian comes to her town, she sees him being a menace or maybe murdering someone, although she's very much afraid of him she thinks he needs a friend. The Corinthian *shocked at this behaviousr* ends up becoming friends with her after sometime and visits her every year until she passes away and every year, he leaves flowers on her grave. Perhaps he meets her grand daughter one day too?

Just a thought for a drabble, if you have time.

Meanwhile, I'll be nose deep in you masterpieces on the master list! 😍

Corinthian isn’t religious, so rituals of any sort are quite unfamiliar to him. Despite that, he does have a few of them, even if ‘rite’ is not necessarily the word he’d use, like the way he goes about his victims - the stalking, the loving, the carving. Or the way he’d visit this one grave every year.

The sunlight of early spring glides across the grey tombstone. The day is cool but the marker is probably warm to the touch. Lanky weeds grow around the grave, although they are not tall or dense enough to consider the memorial neglected. There are numerous lanterns placed around it. An enormous willow tree proudly stands not too far from the grave. Some of its long branches brush against the grey stone. In a place like this, one’s rest can truly be peaceful.

"Train of thoughts" - Morpheus x Reader

A/N: made the trip back to my hometown today (5-hour train ride yikes) so here's what I've been thinking about. Choo choo.

The sound of the train speeding along the tracks is loud enough to muffle the conversations of the passengers. For people gathered in one place for long hours on end, they appear to be completely disinterested and uninvolved in each others’ lives. It’s quite funny, actually - that people silently agree to ignore the presence of their bedfellows. Whether they like it or not, in a poetically lonely way they are now parts of strangers’ stories.

The train is passing a village, the sound of its travel undoubtedly heard by the citizens of the settlement of brick houses, cattle and fields as far as the eye can see. The noise of the train wakes up a three-month-old baby in one of the cottages. His mother hasn’t slept in long weeks. On the other hand, the passengers are also aware of the country life unfolding before them. Little Kate stares at the cows in the field with her nose slammed against the window. She’s seeing them for the first time in her life. For that imperceptible moment, as long as the brick houses are in sight, the strangers of the two worlds are companions in each others' lives.

Hi could I request kissing in the rain with Morpheus after a fight?; thank you

“Is my love not good enough for you?”

In all of his passions, Morpheus can quickly come on a little too strong. Although, ‘little’ should be treated as a diplomatic euphemism. There’s an element of mindless obsession in him, an endless chasm that deepens the stronger his affection is. It scares you. Not because he’s changing into a violent beast of rotten flesh and unrequited love but because you don’t know how to handle it - for every nugget of gold you might think about, Morpheus shoves entire pounds of red diamonds into your hands. While such devotion sounds wonderful on yellowing pages of vintage romances, the reality is quite underwhelming: you feel burdened, pressured, as though there is a debt you have to repay him. And this imagined debenture is slowly but surely killing your love for him.

Read last night #9 of The Sandman, which is basically the story of Morpheus and Nada. Aside from Morpheus/Ka'ickul being quite messed up (he literally goes 'marry me or burn in Hell'), I've been haunted by the idea of putting my very own Slavic spin to that story + a happy end.

So uhhh essentially Chorsiniec x Zorza

Kupala Night (Midsummer) | Dream of the Endless

Recommended listening: Slavic Folk Music Playlist

SUMMARY: Sit around the bonfire on the shortest night of the year to listen to a story about the god of dreams and his beloved queen. All that we do on Kupala Night - the wreaths, the fern flower, the bonfire jumps - will then become clear.

WORDCOUNT: ~ 3.1k

Pronunciation guide: - Ludomiła [loo-doh-me-wa] - Siestrzemiła [sh-eh-st-zh-eh-me-wa] - Chorsiniec [hore-shi-ni-etz] - Zorza [zoh–zh-ah] - Dalebor [dah-leh-bore] - Mirosława [me-roh-swa-vah] - Racibora [rah-tsi-boh-rah] - Swarożyc [sva-roh-zhitz]

The night has fallen a few hours ago but the darkness that befits those strange hours can not find its home among pine trees and oaks as great bonfires light up the black, endless sky. The pyres of the midsummer night burn with a certain viciousness as though they wanted to prove to the white, elegant stars that there is another flame, another force they should reckon with. A smell of smoke and ground cover fills the nostrils of everyone gathered. The late June wind is warm as it gently tugs on their thin clothes. Cicadas chirp shyly, their summer song is barely audible above the cracking of burning wood and the laughter of people.

Since we all know Morpheus is a proud touch-starved being who doesn't want to admit he needs attentions and cuddles, what about a fic where he uses his cat-form to get his s/o attention, and then he reappears in his normal form once he's got it? or maybe reader is sad and he doesn't know how to comfort her, so he just does it as a cat, making her company until she feels better, or they just go for a trip in the dreaming (of course reader knows it's him)

The bedsheets dip under the new weight. Curled on the far too big bed, you don't bother turning around to see the trespasser simply because you're perfectly aware of his identity. Or, perhaps, you are too exhausted to show interest.

It's one of those days when nothing feels quite right for seemingly no reason like a shoe that uncomfortably grazes your heel each time you take a step - not enough to make you bleed but just right to make your foot sore. Today everything felt heavy and weary, the lack of an obvious rationale making your state all the more frustrating. Can’t you just pull yourself together?

Welcome to Moon Siren Horticulture! - Morpheus x Witch!Reader

SUMMARY: Running a plant shop known among deities and occultists just can not be a simple job. One day, the strangest client shows up looking for a remedy for a curse.

WORDCOUNT: ~ 1.5k

Dirty hands, strong smells that gave you a perpetual migraine, cuts from thorns all over your hands - running a horticulture store was a physically demanding job that became only more challenging when one considered a clientele of occultists, deities and pure madmen. The other side of the coin was the curious and hardly practical methods of payment you so often received like phoenix feathers, dragon scales, mermaid tears or sasquatch fur (you were never quite convinced about the authenticity of that one). Despite having no use for them, you had kept the strange artefacts patrons of the store had given you. It seemed like the more responsible thing to do rather than abandon them in the middle of nowhere for regular people to find.

oh goshhh i just wanted to drop by and say- wow you're a fantastic writer! your Sandman fics drew me to your account, and i just finished reading your Pillars of Eternity fic duo- and wow i am speechless. i cant even begin to say just how well thought out the fic is, and how alive it really feels! wisdom is such a cool character, (and profoundly interesting), so is every other character we meet. im rooting for morpheus and wisdom too. thanks op!! <33 ur a wonderful writer!

I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying Pillars of Eternity! At first, I wasn't sure whether it would be welcomed because of the sheer amount of original lore I'm packing in there, so it's absolutely wonderful to learn that the truth is quite the opposite.

I'd like to take this chance and do a small sneak peek/announcement for the third instalment:

A/N: Just a PSA - this is comparably worse than Gilded Cage, whatever demon possessed me back then has taken a sabbatical.

"Silvered Perch" - Dark!Morpheus x Reader

WORDCOUNT: ~ 2.4k

What a strange thought it was, that your life was not always like this: drowning in jewels, silk, delicacies which names you couldn't pronounce, wonderful creatures bowing low each time they saw you and most of all - an entity the strangest of them all who wanted to bend over backwards to keep you happy. Would it be a little too on the nose to say it felt like a dream?

Morpheus made sure to keep the word he had given you, so not too long after you settled down in Dreaming the news of a wedding spread across the realm. Although none of his subjects had the faintest clue as to who you were, they seemed to put trust in the integrity of their king and welcomed you more than warmly. To them, it seemed quite obvious that whoever is worthy of being the bride of Dream of the Endless, had to be at least a little bit exceptional - an expectation you weren’t sure you could ever fulfil.
