Hey, what exactly would happen if a Human Soul was shattered like W.D.? Obviously we saw what happened with a monster, Ala Gaster, sans, and Papyrus, but how would that process change for a human going through the same process?

I mean, i can't say 'exactly' because I'm not Toby fox, I can only offer my thoughts XD

But, tbh, I'm not sure if it'd be too different... a force strong enough to rip time and space apart so completely might be even stronger than a human's determination.

Though, I just had the thought that a human might be able to persist more directly despite being shattered, basically haunting the world--and then I realized that's basically the narrachara theory. So uh. Maybe we do know what happens to a human soul shattered across space and time o_o

Bruh why do the skeleton bros live in the middle of nowhere 😂😂

i mean, they decided to live in snowdin, which is basically the underground's middle of nowhere XD

but for real, idk why but it's pretty much always been my headcanon that the bros live pretty far from the city, and i can think of reasons that make sense for them both: papyrus would love to have a big yard to run around and build Contraptions in, and Sans would have better stargazing. They'd also be away from nosy neighbors (or neighbors they risk disturbing with Shenanigans), and the distance isn't really a problem for them--sans can just shortcut, and papyrus would have an excuse to drive in his car.

And of course, in Unexpected Guests it means the blasters have a couple acres to live in, instead of being cramped in a more normal house's backyard =u=;

What are sans and papyrus' jobs on the surface?

I haven't actually decided :"D

There are a lot of jobs that Papyrus could have just fine; at least in Unexpected Guests he has been the ambassador/mascot for monster kind, at least for a little while, but i also like the ideas along the lines of Papyrus running a games/puzzles store, or escape rooms, or is possibly a car mechanic. He has a number of interests and skills that could translate well, but I have no strong sense for any single thing. He might try all of them!

As for Sans, he's the master of picking up odd jobs, so he's likely got an eclectic resume as well. he's possibly the only person who could make delivery gigs pay well, as with his shortcuts he could do a bunch quickly--but that would probably just end up with him doing like 4 times the work, and he's not about that. Maybe he just has one (delivering for grillby's maybe?). Deltarune shows us he's willing to work retail, and honestly he might also actually be good at that too. He wouldn't be phased by customers throwing tantrums at all; in some ways it's not so different from being a sentry and he'd probably still read car magazines when it was slow.

In any case, if papyrus has his own business as mentioned above, it's actually most likely that sans works there too XD

Fun thought, would Undyne and Papyrus like LARPing? XD

YES especially if alphys makes undyne a combat-safe giant sword

they both love a good excuse for a fight and LARPing is one of the best excuses to hit your friends with foam swords I can think of, so I definitely think they'd be into it wholeheartedly.

Like, there's a reason one of the things i've drawn them doing is jousting on the backs of the special attacks:

Nah, gaster just seems like a scientist who would always be busy with work and is a very serious person. I feel like he would never have an emotions similar to love

(Old ask)

The thing about scientists is that while there seems to still be this perception they're all cold and logical and can't see the beauty of the world, the truth is most scientist study their given field because they love it. Their love and fascination with a topic is what drives them to become a scientist in the first place. I've met so many who were incredibly excited to talk about how cool their research was, and their enthusiasm can be infectious ^^

So in gaster's case, I imagine he was curious about anything and everything, and loved the process of discovery to the point he'd forget about other responsibilities. He was hardly a cold and dispassionate person, but often failed to consider interests besides his own...

i believe chara is not a demon (mythological) but a daemon (computing)

babbybones mentioned this idea during the stream today, and I had never heard of the concept of a daemon (computing), so they kindly explained that a computer daemon is just a background process, and how they thought it related to Chara. But, that gave me Thoughts.

so here’s the wikipedia definition of a daemon:

In multitasking computer operating systems, a daemon (/ˈdiːmən/ or /ˈdeɪmən/)[1] is a computer program that runs as a background process, rather than being under the direct control of an interactive user.

I immediately thought of the narrachara theory. They work in the background, performing a service in such a way that you don’t even realize they’re there. And, also of note, they act without “the direct control of an interactive user.” Chara is not under our control, something they make quite clear in the murder run, but it’s still present on a neutral/pacifist run too.

now, the other connection i made was to the discussion of the heart in the machine. Based on the same reasoning as the linked posts (though i don’t agree with everything in the second link), it’s my headcanon that the heart is chara’s, and its power has been used as a backup generator for the lab.

folks in the chat agreed these were interesting connections, and i offered to add the elaboration on to babbybone’s original post. but then, as i was writing this all out, i decided to read about daemons as they appear in ancient greek thought, and, well……

Daimon or Daemon (Ancient Greek: δαίμων, “god”, “godlike”, “power”, “fate”)[1][2] originally referred to a lesser deity or guiding spirit such as the daimons of ancient Greek religion and mythology and of later Hellenistic religion and philosophy

(wikipedia again, emphasis on ‘guiding spirit’ mine)

So uh. They might also be a daemon in the (old) mythological sense too???

there’s no way to know if toby intended these connections by having chara call themself a ‘demon’ in their creepy speech at the end of a murder run. There’s no way to tell if it’s further validation for the narrachara theory. But it’s certainly Something, and aligns with many headcanons we fans may have about the first fallen human.

If it’s all just coincidence, it’s one that sparks the imagination for sure…

I’m very confused so I’ll need some elaboration from you but: do you think Chara is evil or not?

No, not 100% the way some people seem to think. If they are the narrator (and I think they are), then there’s absolutely no way they’re pure evil (they’re too silly).

But I do think their outlook on life and behavior can be influenced by how you act, and in a murder run, you show them that power and control are the only things that matter. and even then, they don’t believe you should be above consequences for what you’ve done. so like... they can definitely be malevolent and destructive. but only because you chose to lead them there.

they weren’t like that when they were alive. ^^;

Having the man who speaks in hands literally speaks in hands is honestly a really funny pun, intentional or not

Oh yeah, the connection between Gaster using wingdings, which has hand symbols in it, and him potentially sign language, has been a thing since the very early days of the UT fandom; many refer to it specifically as Hands. And in fact, my favorite cover of Gaster's theme is called sign language:

It's funny, because Wingdings is language made of signs. so it's a multi-level pun, it's great :>

Hey, do you have any headcanon of what the main cast families are like (aside from sans and papyrus)? For example, how do you imagine undyne's family? and alphys's?

For the most part, no--I don't like speculating without anything to go on, and for most of the main cast there aren't really even inferences to make beside the basic "well they probably have parents and families somewhere out there" :'D

But, I do have a few small thoughts on undyne and alphys. Alphys' family didn't really understand her interests or make much of an effort to, but were still generally supportive as long as she was happy and not causing trouble. Undyne, on the other hand--we do have dialogue from the phone calls that hints she was a pretty troubled kid who didn't shape up until asgore started training her. Between that and a line she says if you've killed some monsters (something like "do you think it's fun when people... don't come home?"), it's not unreasonable to headcanon that one or both of Undyne's parents were killed by a fallen human.

But, that's about all I've got ^^;

Hi undertale fans. I have a (hopefully) fun question for anyone who knows ASL:

How would you sign ‘determination’ as it’s used in Undertale? Would you just use the same sign as ‘persevere’? Could you somehow reflect the fact it’s a pun (de-termination) by combining signs?

asking for... science reasons :>

if flowey didn’t kill anyone in any resets and therefore didn’t fight with sans nor had any conflict with him, would they get along like how flowey gets along with papyrus ?

I think they could, but it's not as simple as Flowey simply not having done anything evil...

Because even if you don't take Sans' "you'd be dead where you stand" threat seriously, after a few neutral runs Flowey will warn you not to tell Sans anything about you. This implies that if not for his promise to Toriel, Sans really might have followed through on that threat after all.

This is because, presumably, Sans' reports about the timeline exist regardless of whether you go through a murder run. those tell him that a being with the power to control time will destroy the world. The only solution he can see to this is to try to destroy it first--kill, or be killed. So when Flowey shows up, and reveals he has the power to reset, well, he's a threat regardless of his actions. As far as Sans can tell, this is the creature that will end everything eventually.

I think it's toriel's promise that makes Sans rethink this very grim, pessimistic outlook on the possibilities, and that's what I went with in Unexpected Guests. Sans isn't inherently eager to kill or fight, but he'd trapped himself into thinking it was the only option. Talking to toriel, listening to and getting to know her, got him thinking and ultimately gave him an out. He's still pessimistic about the chances of the timeline coming to an end--but he's willing to give Frisk a chance to prove that pessimism wrong, and really, he'd much rather make friends.

With all that in mind! When Flowey controlled the timeline, as long as he didn't tell Sans about his power to reset, they could be friends--Flowey himself says he befriended everyone in canon. I bet they pulled all kinds of pranks on people, and at times when they felt more contemplative, Flowey might ask Sans questions about time travel or philosophy and such. I don't think it'd be quite like Flowey's friendship with Papyrus because the brothers are different people, and I do think flowey would get as annoyed with sans' puns as papyrus does XD but, they could almost certainly find some common ground and not by just standing on the same patch of dirt

But Sans would have reason to be wary of Flowey no matter how nice he'd been so far... <:/

At least, that's what I think is going on ^^;

What type of resets did frisk do during their time in the underground? Sans has a bunch of trauma but the dialogue in the story with frisk suggests that they haven’t done many resets

Frisk only ever did a couple neutral runs, including several incomplete attempts as they figured out what they needed to do to spare every monster; it's one reason their true pacifist ending means so much to them.

But yeah. Flowey is right there, and has openly admitted to countless resets in canon. Frisk could do 0 resets at all, and Sans would still have reason to be wary of that power.

But Flowey doesn't have to have done anything either, at least in my headcanons--because Sans' trauma mostly comes from Gaster's fall and the consequences of that, including knowing what resets mean for his life and future. It should also be noted that I don't headcanon that Sans can actually remember resets--at best, he gets vague feelings and deja vu. so it doesn't matter how many resets frisk or flowey do--he'd be the same amount of depressed, and have the same nightmares :"D

I love how you’ve done the flowey and frisk dynamic it’s so good!

Hehehe, thank you! I like the idea of them having this weird friendship where flowey is genuinely trying to be better but can't help but remain a jerk, and frisk knows who he is and isn't afraid of him even if he brings back bad memories sometimes. after everything they've both been through, it's fun imagining them getting into normal kid shenanigans, at least as far as 'normal' for them goes.

ultimately, they also bond because they're the only people they know of who understand the power of the reset from first-hand experience, and it's nice not to be alone.

Is chara going to be in the story?if yes what role will they receive. Will they be evil and only want genocide like how most of fanon portrays them? Or will they be like flowey or even given a redemption arc? I'm so sorry if this annoys you

heheh... now what, in all my blogging and comic-ing here, would suggest i'd go with the fanon version of chara...? nah, as chara themselves relay, it's the player who pushes things to their edge in a no mercy run--so, conversely, I think in a true pacifist run, you have the power to remind/show chara that not all humans are bad. it's possible they share the memories of asriel finding them when you realize 'someone else' needs to be saved, and i'm fond of the idea that they help you hold on to that final 00.0000000001 HP.

i am a fan of the narrachara theory--there's good evidence for it--and taking that into account it's impossible to see chara as a 'demon' who only craves destruction. the winter alarm clock dialogue and the concept sketches toby has shared on twitter only reinforced my feelings that chara was just a kid... a troubled kid who'd gone through too much when they fell, had too many expectations placed on them, and loved the monsters so much they were willing to suffer even more for the chance to free them.

but, for that reason, now that the monsters are free, chara is kind of taking a well-deserved rest and letting frisk make their own choices. that isn't to say they've completely moved on... but, they're taking a backseat unless frisk needs their help again. they have made the faintest of appearances back in Act 1 of Chapter 6:

and this may not be the last time they make themselves known as well :>

What is undynes and toriels job?

Btw love the comic keep it up ❤️

Tbh, I haven't given it a whooolle lot of thought for either of them >>; so let's see what I can think of off the top of my head XD

based on the neutral endings, I can see undyne taking up being a fitness trainer, or the gym teacher at toriel's school once it opens; she maybe also has one of those over-the-top stunt YouTube channels with papyrus where they cook ridiculous recipes, build obstacle courses, spar, and rope alphys into helping them blow stuff up. But that's probably not her main job XD she'd also probably love being a stunt double or something. I think I've seen firefighter suggested as a way for her to fulfill her desire to protect people, but considering hotland's not good for her, maybe a search-and-rescue or coast guard-type position would be good. That might be her long-term career, but for now she's maybe just got a more basic job to earn some cash.

As for Toriel, it's canon that she starts a school on the surface, so that's what she's working towards even if it's not open yet. It'd be kind of cute if she partnered with Muffet and QC, the snowdin shopkeep, to do bake-sale fundraisers in the meantime. Another possibility is working with Gerson to write a definitive history of the monster kingdom for human audiences; it is littered with far too many puns.

That's my thoughts on it! ^^
