ok so this whole ‘varric and anders were friends’ thing thats circulating the dragon age fandom atm is really interesting cos on the one hand yeah they were buddies i mean varrics the only one except for hawke who can really get along with all the companions but on the other hand the way varric tells cassandra ‘dont remind me i introduced them’ the moment she mentions ‘the grey warden anders’ really shows that he no longer considers anders a friend and his tone is really very bitter

basically what im saying is yeah they were friends but if anders shows up in inquisition dont expect varric to welcome him with a hug and some friendly banter

What more Varric’s home is and has always been Kirkwall. That is his home. Yes Anders is his friend at one point, I mean the man even tries to give the dwarf his most priceless treasure. However, that means nothing after what Anders did. Right or not, Anders attacked a part of Varric’s home, he set off a chain of events that wrecked what Varric held dearest, his Kirkwall.

In 2 when you ask your companion what they think about Anders, Varric says he is tired of mages and Templars. He is upset that this had even started, never mind having to finish it. And yes, he would blame Anders a little, because Anders was the one who took out Elthina, their compromise. Varric is a very neutral source in Dragon Age 2 and he likes that neutrality, Anders upsetting it was stupid and wrong to Varric

There is also dialogue in Inquisition where Cassandra asks about Kirkwall and Varric is incredibly bitter over the fact it has been years and the city is still not the same. Yes the city can be rebuilt, but people can take longer or are never healed.

What Anders did was destroy Varric’s home and sanctity, he destroyed the one thing Varric had pride in besides Bianca. His friend attacked his city and that speaks of how broken their friendship would be after Dragon Age 2.

It is not completely obvious if the narration in the Keep is supposed to just be a general overview or actually in character for Varric, but if it is in fact in character, then yes, Varric would be bitter and make Anders out to be not so nice.

One can’t blow up a piece of your home and expect to remain your friend.
