Miley Cyrus by David Sims for Marc Jacobs Spring 2014 Ad Campaign

Marc and Miley -- minus one high profile photographer. Miley Cyrus' smoldering, sulky spring ad campaign for Marc Jacobs dropped Wednesday, Jan. 8, but the look of the stormy shot was ever-so-slightly different from the brand's usual look. That's because Jacobs was forced to tap a different photographer to shoot the campaign, after his usual point man Juergen Teller refused to work with the "Adore You" crooner.

"He just didn’t want to shoot her," Jacobs told WWD on Thursday. In his place, photographer David Sims took the photos -- which were set at a beach and styled by Stefan Beckman -- of Cyrus, 21, and two models, instead. "We wanted this beach with the girls kind of sulky and broody, and we thought it would be cool if it was Miley with what could be two friends, feeling distant and quite dark," the New York-based designer shared.

Model Call: Charlotte Carey

Arriving at the WWD office on Monday afternoon, Charlotte Carey was still recovering from a traumatic experience earlier in the day. In search of the perfect beach spot, Carey had inadvertently stumbled upon something a bit less tranquil: the rare New York nude beach in Rockaway.

Carey, who is repped by Wilhelmina Models, was fully clothed in an expertly torn Bjork T-shirt and ready to talk about her experience in the industry.

His influence is everywhere. Hedi Slimane’s grunge-fueled sophomore collection for Saint Laurent ignited his brand rejuvenation effort and also made its mark on everything from high-street chains packed to the rafters with lumberjack plaids and skinny leathers this fall, to designer advertising, suddenly all moody and black-and-white. Slimane also set a new template for the all-knowing, all-doing modern creative director by accruing wider powers following the exit over the summer of chief executive officer Paul Deneve, who joined Apple. While Francesca Bellettini, an executive director from sister brand Bottega Veneta, took over as ceo, Slimane was handed the responsibility to “supervise all strategic projects for the brand.

Vuitton Confirms Nicolas Ghesquière Hire

Louis Vuitton has named Nicolas Ghesquière — the designer who catapulted Balenciaga to become one of the hottest tickets in Paris — its new artistic director of women’s collections, effective immediately.

“Louis Vuitton has always incarnated for me the symbol of ultimate luxury, innovation and exploration,” Ghesquière said. “I am very honored of the mission that I am entrusted with, and proud to join the history of this great maison. We share common values and a vision.” He succeeds Marc Jacobs, the American designer who stepped down from Vuitton last month after a stellar 16-year tenure to focus on developing his signature brand and ready his namesake company for an initial public offering.

Saint Laurent Fall 2013 PFW

The collection Slimane showed on Monday night didn’t shout, whisper or even mouth the words Saint Laurent. But (blasphemous though it may ring to those who worship at the YSL altar), to do so might not be the designer’s mandate. Word around Paris is that the company brass wants the collection to skew younger in look in the hopes of engaging a younger customer. Consider that done. Surely one cannot miss the ubiquity of Seventies-ish floppy hats around this city, both at the shows and elsewhere — a trend traceable to Slimane’s spring runway. None of which explains his fall collection.

Burberry Prorsum Fall 2013 LFW

Bailey called the show “Trench Kisses: A Collection of Classics and Christine Keeler,” referring to the infamous model and showgirl who nearly brought down the British government in the 1963 Profumo affair. The designer channeled the demure dress of the period, with knee-length skirts, some crafted from translucent rubber, and kitten-wedge heels in animal prints, accented with gold buckles at the front. Chic, slightly boxy mink and calfskin coats came in zebra, giraffe or leopard prints, while some trenches boasted translucent rubber details. One dark red coat had gold bar embellishments at the front and back, while another was dotted with shiny grommets around the bottom. Bailey also played his hand with a heart motif that made its debut at his men’s collection last month in Milan; here he dotted them all over shirtdresses and blouses and plunked big gold hearts on white dresses for evening.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 RTW

The Seventies are a sartorial moment in time that Marc Jacobs loved and loves to relive. So it should have come as no surprise that he chose to mine the decade again, except that this time he explored the polished side of the retro genre with simple, covered-up dresses and tailored separates that highlighted the responsible side of the youthful Marc by Marc girl. She’s grown up and gotten a job, perhaps even one that requires a suit, such as the cute navy pinstriped cropped style worn by Catherine McNeil. It would not be the Seventies without the signature ruddy color palette — shown here in shades of orange, red and blue as well as some graphic, colorfully clashing prints — and at least a little glam. The short satin numbers toward the finale hinted at a party, but not as much as the models’ wild curly mains and glossy red lips, both worn with every look to infuse the collection with disco spirit.”

Riccardo Tisci Signs on for Three More Years at Givenchy

According to WWD, Riccardo Tisci, who has revved up Givenchy with his bold and daring designs, has extended his contract with the French house. Noting that the label is shifting into “expansion mode” to capitalize on the buzz surrounding both the designer and the brand due in large part to the duality created by his sweatshirts and tees, his renewal marks a partnership that was first forged back in 2005. Givenchy officials declined to comment on the reports, but more concrete details should be apparent very shortly.

Marc Jacobs To Collaborate Next With H&M?

With all the recent news and speculation regarding H&M and Givenchy and later denials from both camps. People close to the project have indicated that Marc Jacobs will be the next collaboration with H&M. Mr. Jacobs demand for complete secrecy regarding the project has some wondering if the Givenchy rumors were to throw people off. We are hoping that this is the case and look forward to MJ x H&M in 2013!

Nicolas Ghesquière to Leave Balenciaga

WWD writes: "The designer and the fashion house are citing a 'joint decision to end their working relationship' effective Nov. 30."After assisting Jean Paul Gaultier, and working on knitwear at Pôles, Ghesquière originally joined Balenciaga, at age 23, to create, "among other things, funeral clothes for the Japanese licensing market," according to the Times. He was named creative director of the brand two years later, in 1997.

Speaking about his rocky start at Balenciaga, Ghesquière recently told the Sunday Times: "Yes, we did have a size issue. We started very skinny, it's true. Strangely, we didn't have fit models at all to ... begin with — just to give you an idea of the size of the company. So we did fittings on the girls at the studio and they were often quite petite. I had a tendency to think good cut and small size, but it should be a good cut in big sizes, too."

As WWD points out, "The news of the separation comes only a month after Ghesquière staged one of the most acclaimed shows of the spring 2013 fashion season." And just as Kristen Stewart found her footing as the ambassador of the brand's Florabotanica scent.

Véronique Leroy Ready-to-Wear S/S PFW

“The Belgian designer, Véronique Leroy, added a soupcon of kink — lots of mesh tube skirts and peekaboo cutouts — to her Mormon-inspired parade of demure boxy tailoring with a Fifties allure. The combination yielded one of her most polished and on-trend collections in years.”

Kanye West to Skip Paris Fashion Week

Kanye West will not show his womenswear line, DW, at Paris Fashion Week this season, WWD reports. Karla Otto, the singer-designer's publicity firm, confirmed the news but will not say if this means the line itself is discontinued.

West has yet to comment on his absence, though he has made it abundantly clear that he was unhappy with the critical response to his initial two showings in Paris. In March, he went so far as to ban fashion critics, including The New York Times' Eric Wilson, from previewing his second collection. Wilson challenged West's decision, telling him it was a great opportunity to explain his point of view, to which the designer responded to the critic, "If they don't understand it, they don't understand it." Ironically, the Fall 2012 collection in question ended up scoring decent-to-solid runway reviews. Rolling Stone found it a marked improvement over his debut.

Hedi Slimane May Bring Haute Couture Back to YSL

Raf Simons may have gotten all the buzz this past couture week, but now it’s Hedi Slimane‘s turn.

WWD got a sneak peek at an interview inVogue Paris’s August issue with YSL’s newly minted creative director, Hedi Slimane. In it, he reveals that, despite the fact that he’s never designed womenswear, let alone couture, he might be the one to bring it back. He says, “Haute couture is a legitimate subject for Yves Saint Laurent and could resume one day,” but that “the priority today is to revamp and redeploy the luxury ready-to-wear.” To that end, the issue will also mark the unveiling of the ready-to-wear label’s new name and logo: “the Saint Laurent Paris name spelled across a square black box.” Interesting.

Back in the day, Yves Saint Laurent rivaled the house of Dior as one of Paris’s most prominent couturiers. He remains the only one of the house’s creative directors to design couture, but it sounds like he may not be the last–and that YSL-Dior couture rivalrycould see a revival.

Slimane also says his first meeting with YSL chief executive officer Paul Deneve was in November, so we guess those rumors dating back to March 2011 were just made up.
