James Franco’s Summer Movie Club

For me, summer means time to watch movies and read books. Since we talked about books last week, here are some movies to watch between the blockbusters full of explosions, men in tights, and aliens on the big screens. It’s hard to choose, so I just put down the ones I’ve watched lately. Much love.

Your Alternate List of Best Films to Watch This Summer

What makes a film distinctly favorable towards one season? It has little do with the time in which it is set or that in which it premiered—it’s about a tone and a texture to the picture that feels tethered to a certain seasonal psyche. The hazy languid days of summer call for a warm-hued and more sensuous kind of film that both sparks our excitement but allows us to wallow in a certain dream-like air of mystery and nostalgia for something we’ve yet to touch.

Spike Lee - Red Hook Summer Official Trailer VIDEO

Spike Lee’s much anticipated Red Hook Summer has released its official trailer, the latest in his Chronicles of Brooklyn anthology. The movie revolves around a young suburban black kid from Atlanta who is sent to the Red Hook projects in Brooklyn to spend the summer with a grandfather he has never met. It was self-financed and took 18 days to film. The crew consisted substantially of NYU students, and the cast list of lesser-knowns reads like this: Clarke Peters, Jules Brown, Toni Lysaith, Nate Parker, James Ransone and Thomas Jefferson Byrd. While taking a religious tone, the film honestly resonates Lee’s indie appeal with “old home video”-styled shots and controversial topics of diversity.
