Simon Davidson ‘Salt and Smoke’ Exhibition

It’s easy to imagine that Simon Davidson grew up playing with a lot of Hot Wheels in the sandpit. As a photographer, he’s built a career taking pictures of cars and capturing a beauty most would miss. ‘Salt and Smoke’ is the name of his new exhibition, which you can check out for free at Bondi Pavilion Art Gallery from February 28 to March 11.

From the lunar-like landscapes of Bonneville salt lake in Utah and Lake Gairdner in South Australia, to the tiny burnout pads dotted around Australia, Davidson has clocked up some serious mileage (and a thick layer of dust) shooting hot-rods, muscle cars and the plumes of smoke they leave in their wake. Teetering a fine line between destruction and creation, there’s something wild about the phenomenon, which sits somewhere between performance, fetish and sport.

Davidson’s images are equally beguiling. With obvious affection he captures these rev heads and their noisy, pimped out rides in a stunning new colour saturated light. In such a macho culture of man and machine, Davidson manages to find fragility in the soft clouds of smoke and unnerving stillness of salt lake in that moment before the dust storm.

Now There’s a Rumor That Christopher Kane Is Going to Dior

"No grain of gossip is too small to grow into a mighty story," writes theIHT's Suzy Menkes today in an article titled "We Are All Guilty for This Mess," and she's right on both counts. Except one could argue that this game of fashion musical chairs isn't a "mess," but rather a carefully planned bid by fashion executives for maximum suspense and press coverage

‘Composition with Double Lines and Yellow’, 1932 Piet Mondrian

This is one of the earliest of Mondrian’s so-called ‘tram-line’ paintings. Before 1932 he had used single lines but he began pairing them in order to achieve a sense of optical movement. He also began to extend the coloured areas over the edge of the canvas. In this painting, Mondrian created a perfect balance between the colour and the horizontal and vertical lines, so that no one element dominated. He painted with great precision, although he did so intuitively by trial and error, not through mathematical calculation.

Dior's New Site; Black Lip Balm; Parisian Polishes

MAKEUPDior's new Backstage website is an explosion of all things beauty. You can check out new colors, view runway footage, look at specific photos (like this one) to highlight your favorite looks, and (most importantly) buy stuff. There's also bangin' theme music, but put it on mute if you're sneaking a peek from the office. [Racked Inbox]

LIPSThe beauty look at the Pucci show at London Fashion Week included one surprising element: black lip balm. The custom balm was created by makeup artist Lisa Butler, who liked the "black currant" effect the balm had worn over lipstick. This isn't a look you should go too far with, though...Butler says she's anti-black lipstick. Nobody tell Abby from NCIS. [Beauty Counter]

NAILSChanel made makeup inspired by Las Vegas, and OPI's new line was inspired by the New York City Ballet. Next up: newbie brand Mattese Elite has created six mostly glittery polishes named for and inspired by Paris. Shades include Embrasse Moi (fuschia glitter), Je T'Aime (gold), and Mon Amour (red glitter). Not included: a color called Voulez Vous Couchez Avec Moi Ce Soir. [Birchbox]
