Thoughts on Romance from the Road Victoria Crayhon

This work is an ongoing project that uses photography to document text interventions on roadside marquee signs. I place phrases on movie and motel marquee signs, many of which I find through research but also in the course of my frequent long distance travel by car. I use my own sign letters and then leave the scene with the words left intact upon the sign. Before I depart, I make a photograph from the sidewalk or roadside. I then make large-scale color prints as documents of the sign in its environment. The photograph becomes the sole remnant of the project as the letters inevitably disappear or are taken down. The work addresses the effect of media and technology upon human memory and desire.

Laura Plageman - Response

Photographer Laura Plageman’s series “Response”is compiled of landscape photographs taken by Plageman which are then made into large prints that are then physically altered and re-photographed. The resulting photographs portray an abstracted landscape that draws on the chaos of nature that makes these images so interesting. “My process unfolds through observation and experimentation - I let the image and its materiality dictate its direction. Playing with paper and with light in unplanned and organic ways, I look for new ways to perceive the space, form, and context of my subjects,”explains Plageman. The complexity of the photographs guide viewer’s eye not only through the actual image of the landscape, but also the texture and the dimensionality of the actual paper being photographed.

Scott Hazard - Photo Constructs

In a world with a seemingly endless amount of stimulus available, most of us are concerned with our own business, unable to let some of the more subtle aspects of the world reveal themselves to us at times. Taking note of these details might help us better appreciate or gain an enhanced understanding of the world we live in. As Walt Whitman wrote in the preface to Leaves of Grass, “The greatest poet dilates any thing that was before thought small…with the grandeur and life of the universe. He is a seer.” My work temporarily removes or alters the viewer’s existing frame of reference to provide an opportunity for a different presence of mind, a distilled frame of reference.
