Six months ago, I made the jump from a cramped efficiency to a proper pad. Now that I had a place worth sprucing up, I grabbed Hulger’s arcing, eco-friendly Plumen compact fluorescents (they last 8,000 hours) and strung them from the ceiling. Whereas other CFL bulbs throw off a harsh white light, these have the warm yellow-white glow of incandescents. In other words, I swagger-jacked the bare-bulb style of my favorite Brooklyn bars but went one better with some green cred.—GQ Editor Andrew Richdale
