Since launching back in 2003, Campbell Milligan and Chris Searl’s Australia-based Monster Children has developed a global cult following thanks to its blend of surf and skate culture and focus on art, design, music and photography — not to mention a lauded list of contributors that includes everyone from Spike Jonze, Mike D, and Jason Lee to Hedi Slimane, Anton Corbijn and more. Now, after dropping a celebratory tome back in 2013 and introducing “Longform” with Mark Gonzales last year, MC is launching its 50th issue.

Raindrop Cake Is America's Next Big Food Craze

Step aside, cronut. There’s a new dessert coming to town that’ll be making a splash this weekend. Meet the raindrop cake, a dessert inspired by Japan’s Mizu Shingen Mochi. Described by creator Darren Wong, it’s a “light, delicate and refreshing raindrop made for your mouth.” And like rain, the water and agar-based creation is calorie-free and lacks flavor until eaten with accompanying molasses and roasted soybean flour. Raindrop cake will only be available at Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg starting this weekend for now, but you can learn more about the dessert here.

adidas Reissues the AS 350 for the Very First Time

The adidas AS 350 was arguably one of the rarest models to come out of Herzogenaurach. Originally a Japan-exclusive, the tennis sneaker was released under the AS Series back in the late ’70s and early ’80s, but unfortunately the silhouette hasn’t been brought back from the archives since then. For spring/summer season adidas‘ SPEZIAL line has unveiled a remake of the ultra-rare shoe, one which features a similar perforated toe and premium leather construction. The heritage design also features contrasting black leather accents and gold foil labelling along the side panel. Finished off with tonal lacing and a gum outsole, look to purchase the adidas 350 SPZL at select Three Stripes accounts across the globe.

Air Jordan 1 Retro KO High OG Sail/Varsity Red

Originally released back in 1985, the KO take on the Air Jordan 1 has enjoyed some solid drops in recent years, appearing in a “Shadow” make-up just last month after “Bred,” “Militia Green,” “Royal” and “Rivalry” editions had surfaced in 2015 and 2014. Now the underrated ’80s classic is back again — this time in a Sail/Varsity Red combo. True to the OG, a canvas upper is once again paired with Vandal tooling while red accents — in this case — pop on an otherwise white execution.

LA's Button Mash Combines a Bar & Restaurant With a Retro Game Arcade

Games arcades often ban food and drink from their premises in fear of soiled joysticks and grubby buttons, but Los Angeles hybrid restaurant Button Mash doesn’t seem so preoccupied with such concerns. Featuring an inspired interior that oozes ’80s-era whimsy, the design for the self-titled ‘barcade’ was conceived by LA design agency Design, Bitches, and draws from influences as diverse as film noir and Postmodernism. Spread over 4,000 square feet, the restaurant is divided into three zones —  a dining area serving Asian fusion food, a pinball room, and a video arcade offering two dozen classic titles such as Tron and Donkey Kong, all of which is connected by a bar.”The design is rooted in multiple LA-centric time periods, with nods to the 1980s and 1990s in material and colour choices, mixed with the local haunt feel resonant in film noir classics like Chinatown,” said Design, Bitches.”These inspirations and influences are intertwined with Postmodern design and pop cultural references to create a timeless experience.”

Clothsurgeon x Selfridges 2016 Collection and Shop Window

British-based menswear label Clothsurgeon has linked up with retailer Selfridges for a limited capsule collection and a shop window installation, to boot. The capsule includes bombers, hoodies, workwear trousers, as well as higher-end basics. Designer Rav Matharu built this collection around the idea of sustainability by upcycling deadstock Scottish wool tartan kilts and French indigo cotton for for Savile Row-style button-downs and waxed MA-1 jackets — all recreated to fit within Clothsurgeon’s singular aesthetic sensibilities. The shop window literalizes the brand name, putting a patchwork bomber built of repurposed waxed hunting jackets at center stage in a strikingly lit surgery room, complete with information on the brand for pedestrians to read.

Meet the Menswear Duo Behind Melindagloss

It’s important to understand that Mathieu de Ménonville and Rémi de Laquintane of menswear label Melindagloss are friends first and co-designers of their label second. As teenagers they would obsess over interior designers Jean-Charles Moreux and Jean-Michel Frank together, study recordings of James Dean reading poetry together, fawn over pictures of Gainsbourg and Birkin at cool Parisian hangouts such as La Louisiane together—and most importantly—have shirts and suits made by the local tailor together.
