Versace Launches E-Commerce Site

Versace is moving into new digital shopping digs, finally giving guys stateside the chance to get in touch with their inner Italian rocker playboy. The e-commerce site has a host of Donatella's designs for men up for grabs, from flashier runway pieces to more everyday slick suiting, mixed media topcoats, and iconic moto jackets. Designed aesthetically in line with the brand's brick and mortar shops, specifically Versace's recently opened NYC SoHo boutique, the site features a mosaic of black and white imagery overlaid with saturated colors that walks the line between classic and cutting edge — just like the Italian house.

Another Black Friday has come and gone. There were crazy-good discounts, 12am start times, mile-long lines and a few violent incidents to boot. Now that all the dust–and buyers euphoria–has cleared, see how the country fared on the year’s biggest shopping day, by the numbers.

$11.4 billion: Total money spent by shoppers at retail stores and malls on Black Friday, according to the AP.

$52.4 billion: Total money spent by shoppers over the Black Friday weekend, according to theNational Retail Fund.

226 million: Record-breaking number of shoppers who visited retailers or shopped online over the weekend, reported by the NRF.

90: The percentage of shoppers who, according to a survey conducted by the International Council of Shopping Centers, planned to buy items for themselves or their families, compared to 10 percent of shoppers who said they planned on buying gifts for others.

20: The number of shoppers injured after a woman fired pepper spray into a crowd in order to clear a path to a crate of Xbox video game players at the Porter Ranch Walmart in California, according to CBS News.

$398.62: Average money spent per customer, reported by the NRF.

$15,000: Estimated amount of debt for the average American household, according to Capital Insider.

12AM: The time when Target, Best Buy, Macy’s and Kohl’s opened their doors on Black Friday, earlier than ever before.

200,000: Number of signatures an online petition garnered, urging Target to let their employees spend Thanksgiving Day dinner with their families, not their employer.

1:15AM: The time when dozens of rabid bargain hunters stormed the Soho Hollister store, breaking through the door and looting armfuls of clothing, reports the New York Post. Apparently, they had begun lining up outside the store hours earlier, not realizing that this particular location wasn’t opening until the next day–and clearly they were not pleased by the miscommunication.

One: The number of gunshot victims. A man and his family were confronted outside a Walmart in San Leandro by a group of men who demanded they hand over their purchases. When the family refused, one of the thieves pulled a gun and shot the man, who is currently in critical but stable condition, according to Patch.com

Two: The number of suspects still being sought after gunfire erupted at a shopping center in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There were luckily no injuries, reports the BBC.

One: The number of stabbing victims. A man was stabbed after a fight broke out in front of a Macy’s department store at the Arden Fair Mall, reports the Washington Post. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One: The number of men found dead at a Target in South Charleston. The man collapsed from an apparent heart problem, reports the New York Daily News. Scary: Shoppers ignored the fallen man, even at times stepping over his body.

Watch the Great Black Friday Two-Dollar Waffle Iron Riot

What's the funniest thing about this video of people nearly rioting over a $2 waffle iron at Wal-Mart? Probably the bit where it embodies everything awesome about America, including a horrible economy, aggressive consumerism, mindless violence and a complete lack of concern for one's fellow human beings. And let's not forget internet rubbernecking and smug class hatred, sure to arrive soon in comments on all the finest sites on the web! Happy Black Friday, everyone!

Black Friday: Skip It

This Friday will be Black Friday – the biggest sales day in America.

In my experience, Black Friday is never worth it. I think shopping should be a slow, relaxing, and pleasant experience. You should be able to casually peruse things and take a day, maybe even a week, to come to a decision. If you’re lucky enough to meet a salesperson who is knowledgable about what they’re selling, you should enjoy a chat a learn something about what you’re buying.

Black Friday is the opposite of this. It encourages impulsive shopping and feeds bargain addictions. Salespeople rarely have time to speak to you and people are often scrambling around for whatever they can grab. It’s better, I think, to stay at home and spend time with the family. Enjoy your comfy slippers, have some coffee, and maybe help bake some cookies. Come next Monday, there will be a ton of sales online anyway, and shopping from the comfort of your own home will be more pleasant than standing outside of a boutique at 7am.

If you insist on doing Black Friday, I suggest going to the stores today or tomorrow. If you see something you like, ask one of the Sales Associates if they’ll put it on hold for you until Friday. I’ve found many are willing to, and some will also happily take your credit card information and charge you Friday, thus allowing you to pick up the garment on Saturday, after the madness has ended.
