Rediscovered Photos From the 1970's Hollywood Skate Scene

Photographer Hugh Holland was in the right place at the right time, he says. That place was LA and the time was 1975. "Skateboarding was happening in many places, but not like in California," he says over the phone from LA, where he still lives at 74. "To me, it seemed like this was the center of everything." Hugh's photos of long-haired, golden-skinned kids gunning down Hollywood's hills and tearing up its boulevards document the very origins of skate culture.

Over the course of three years, Holland took thousands of photos of the scene as it changed from an unruly after-school activity to a professional sport, complete with competitions, endorsement deals, and helmets. Glowing with late-afternoon California light, the images sat unsorted in boxes at his house for decades. But earlier this month, they went on show at Blender Gallery in Sydney (Hugh: "So many of these Australian surfers looked just like the kids in my pictures!"). And Hugh is still sifting through his crates.

Nike Made a Toronto-Themed Sneaker Called The 6

As if our egos weren’t swollen enough already, Nike has just released a cool new edition of its classic Air Max 1 that pays tribute to Toronto. Dubbed The 6, the minimalist sneaker was designed by a Canadian, and includes all sorts of practical new features northerners will appreciate, like rubberized outsoles and military-grade leathers to protect against harsh elements. Why do we deserve such a high honour from the sneaker gods? In Nike’s own words: “Recently, the city of Toronto has earned pop-culture accolades, thanks to a cultural renaissance that spans sport, music and entertainment.” The shoe will be available December 6 at Nike.com and select Toronto boutiques including Lost and Found, Community 54, Nomad and Capsule Footwear.

Yohji Yamamoto x adidas Tennis: The Roland Garros Collection

Looking toward the 2015 French Open, adidas Tennis and Y-3 exhibit the adidas Roland Garros Collection by Y-3 in a new video featuring tennis players Ana Ivanovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, as well as designer and living legend Yohji Yamamoto. The collection combines Y-3’s distinctive aesthetic with adidas’ innovative performance technology. Yamamoto discusses the concepts behind the performance wear, offering such insights as “you need some chaos which has to be swallowed by new power.” I’m not sure what that means but it sounds cool, and definitely embodies the spirit of the stylized, slow motion video.

A Look Inside the Jordan Hangar in Los Angeles

Newly opened by Jordan Brand is the Jordan Hangar court in Playa Vista, Los Angeles. The futuristic court features the official logos of LA Clippers stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, as well as a fragmented graphic print design. Meant to be a permanent fixture in LA, the court is essentially SoCal’s compliment to New York’s Terminal 23 and will serve as a facility for both Griffin and Paul, as well as a performance basketball space for the community, high school competitions, and future Jordan Brand events. Besides the court itself, the space includes custom-built bleachers, locker rooms, product displays, and even a gaming lounge.

Nike’s Newest Collection Looks Runway Ready

Fleece doesn’t exactly scream “high fashion,” despite a recent trend among top men’s wear designers to insert athletic-inspired elements into their collections. But a new line of Nike active wear has elevated the utilitarian sports fabric. The Nike Tech Fleece Collection, available Aug. 29, features five pieces of casual sportswear made from Nike’s reinvented fabric — a plush foam core sandwiched between layers of smooth cotton jersey, which is both warmer and lighter than standard fleece. Cut in slimmer silhouettes with minimal topstitching and seaming, the jackets, sweatshirts and sweatpants have a modern, clean look that is as ready for the runway as it is for the gym.
