Under the Radar: Summer's Other Must-see Movies
Traditionally summer at the movies means an abundance of spandex, Lycra and other stretchy fabrics that allow our heroes, both super and self-made, to comfortably leap buildings, battle baddies and make hasty exits.
And while those blockbusters are the bread and butter of the season, we're also interested in movies where no characters wear latex suits, unless it's ironic, and nary a skyscraper-leveling alien shall be seen. Yes, many other fine films operating under the mainstream radar are worthy of our attention and should you be of the ilk inclined to mix big-budget, epic, good-versus-evil battles with smaller-scale, quietly powerful films that manage to whisper to us while the other movies are happy to shout, this list is for you.
So follow us along the path less travelled as we investigate a handful of titles that are must-sees in their own ways and follow topics ranging from infidelity, time travel, young love, thievery and summer camp and whose characters are more likely to be sporting corduroy than capes.

Moonrise Kingdom
Studio: eOne
Release date: May 25
Buzz: It's Wes Anderson and for some, that name alone will engender enough interest that nothing more needs to be said. For those who need a little more encouragement, Anderson's latest follows two youngsters in the first blush of puppy love who run away together and send the townspeople on a wild chase to find them. With Anderson regulars Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman joining new collaborators Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand and Edward Norton, this one looks like another sweetly melancholic, retro journey from one of the most inimitable directors around.

Hugh Dancy plays doctor Mortimer Granville who stumbles upon the invention of the first vibration, all in the name of medical science, as he tries to cure female hysteria. The Intouchables
Release date: June 1
Studio: Alliance
Buzz: After actor Omar Sy beat The Artist breakout star Jean Dujardin at France's version of the Oscars, scoring the Cesar for best actor thanks to his work in this moving story, it was clear The Intouchables was a movie that spoke to people. Filmmakers Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano tell the story of Phillipe (Francois Cluzet) an aristocrat who hires ex-con Driss (Sy) to help him after a paragliding accident has ended with him confined to a wheelchair. With a whiff of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, this one looks powerful and all sorts of uplifting.
We Have a Pope (Habemus Papum)
Studio: eOne
Release date: June 8
Buzz: Award-winning Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti takes a look at an extreme case of stage fright in this dramedy about a newly elected pope (Michel Piccoli) who refuses to step out on the balcony at the Vatican and greet his adoring worshippers. Clearly daunted by the responsibility and scrutiny that come with a duty he never asked for, Cardinal Melville starts speaking with a non-believing therapist (played by Moretti himself) as he tries to get to the root of his refusal to take office. Taking a humourous look at the inner workings of papal traditions isn't easy and we're very interested to see what Moretti comes up with.
Safety Not Guaranteed
Studio: Alliance
Release date: June 15
Buzz: Aubrey Plaza hits the big-screen as one of a trio of reporters who goes out on assignment to find the kooky man who put out a newspaper ad seeking a companion for time travel, with an important warning that doubles as the film's title. The kicker is that this one is based on a true story - kind of - and indie stalwart Mark Duplass (Cyrus, Jeff Who Lives at Home) plays the man in question who believes he's been able to go through time once before and now wants to bring someone along with him. Equal parts quirky, heartwarming and funny, Safety Not Guaranteed seems like a slow-burning summer gem.

Lola Versus
Release date: June 1
Studio: Fox Searchlight
Buzz: You always hear that it's best to write what you know and real-life couple Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister Jones know about dating ups-and-downs (just look at their 2009 flick Breaking Upwards) and give their lead character Lola the shock of her life when her fiance breaks up with her mere weeks before their wedding. Now that her world has been shaken up so drastically, she's forced to reevaluate just what she wants in life, in relationships and what it means to be single and searching on the cusp of 30. With the always-compelling Greta Gerwig as the titular character, you can bet this one will be full of honest laughs and realistic performances.
Take This Waltz
Studio: Mongrel
Release date: June 29
Buzz: Sarah Polley has been in the business a long time and emerged as a fiercely talented director with the heartbreaking Away From Her in 2006, signalling a flare for behind-the-camera work as well as acting. She returns towards the end of the summer with a sun-dappled Toronto-lensed romance about a married couple who seem happy until one of them is tempted by an attractive neighbour and the notion of routine versus romance starts to shatter their bond. Featuring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby and Sarah Silverman, we can't wait to see what Polley has cooked up for us with Take This Waltz.
