A House Is Not a Home by Julia Felsenthal

To tell this story right, I have to go back: to tween-y afternoons spent in the company of a stack of Architectural Digests, flipping first, always, to a section called Great Estates for Sale. What did my future hold: a Tuscan villa? An English manor house? A Caribbean aerie? When it came to 12,000-square-foot homes, I wasn’t picky.

For my 9th birthday, I wanted more than anything an upholstered armchair in navy blue canvas, one that hinted at cozy mugs of tea and long winter afternoons and great novels, even if it mostly only served as substrate for piles of dirty clothes. Another year it was miniature gargoyles, scowling little hunks of stone carved into bookends and paperweights that had to be mail-ordered from a medieval reproduction emporium

The World's Youngest Master Penman Talks Passion & Commitment

Words in today’s world are facing a crisis: so often represented by emotionless pixels on a screen devoid of the author’s quirks of personality, there is less and less of a need for the tactile art of handwriting. As such, it is an exceedingly rare quality for one to not only champion the discipline of calligraphy, but to devote their entire life to the discipline of penmanship. Jake Weidmann is one such person, but what makes him even more unique is that, of twelve accredited master penman in the world, he is the youngest by three decades. In the video above, Weidmann provides a glimpse into his often months-long process of creating elaborate works of calligraphy, the ardor and toil that is necessary to achieve such a position, and the power of the pen that remains in an increasingly isolating world of electronic devices.

Aaron Kai "Vices" Exhibition at Above Second Gallery

Hawaiian muralist and artist Aaron Kai is set to unveil his newest exhibition titled “Vices” at Above Second Gallery this weekend. “Vices” takes inspiration from the “vices” of our generation. Often viewed as sinful or immoral to society, vices hold an aspect of elevating sub-cultures, a notion Kai aims to explore with his signature style of wavy post-pop art that embraces whimsical designs and bold colors. The exhibition will appropriately be held in the multicultural, metropolitan setting that is Hong Kong, an indulgent city of both virtues and vices. Kai will be in town for meet-and-greets and will also be offering unique dead stock pieces for sale. If you’re in Hong Kong, be sure to stop by the Aaron Kai “Vices” exhibition’s official opening May 22.
