The Year in Fashion: In Praise of Young Independent Designers

As this wholly unpredictable year in fashion draws to a close, there suddenly appears to be no such thing as a long-term career as a name-in-lights creative director of a house anymore (always excepting Karl Lagerfeld, that is). The way things are shaping up, maybe we’re looking at a whole new world where hot names and their teams will be booked like bands at festivals. They’ll strut onto the house stage, play a couple of killer sets, and then exit, in time-honored music business mode, before the encore, leaving the audience baying for more—and wondering where their next gig will be. Basically, that’s what Raf Simons did at Christian Dior.

Menswear New Love Affair with Homeware

Menswear brands trying out homeware isn’t particularly new. Acne Studios launched a furniture collection in 2011, remaking and distorting Carl Malmsten’s New Berlin Sofa. Rick Owens launched his furniture in 2013, having previously exhibited the works in 2010. At the time, Wallpaper magazine referred to them as “more like monumental totems” than actual furniture, but they still count as part of the realm of homewares.

Hedi Slimane - Mr. Provacative

It has been a year since Mr. Slimane, who made his name designing skinny suits for skinny men more than a decade ago, took over as the creative director of Yves Saint Laurent, in what has proved to be the most contentious undertaking of a brand reinvention in recent memory. Every week there is a new uproar, from spats with critics to the relocation of his studio.

Cathy Horyn Reviews Saint Laurent

"And the controversy is good for Saint Laurent. But mainly it was clear to me how strong the name is. In terms of design, the clothes held considerably less value than a box of Saint Laurent labels. Without the label attached to them, Mr. Slimane’s grunge dresses wouldn’t attract interest — because they’re not special. But a box of labels is worth a million.

Hermès stands in sharp contrast to the Saint Laurent show and its lazy values.“
