The Costs of Starting a Fashion Brand: Decisions & Designs

Job security, steady income, foreseeable career path, savings, what do these all have in common? They are all just a few of the sacrifices one can expect when starting their own brand. The daunting task of giving everything up and starting your own label holds many risks, but the rewards can provide you with something more than just monetary satisfaction. You are your own man. It’s generally not about the money to begin with, most are borne out of a passion and as a hobby to make something that is new and refreshing. This digital age that we live has leveled the playing field where more people can take the plunge as online stores have eliminated the costs of opening up a brick and mortar. According to The Business of Fashion, the fashion in itself amounts to a $1.5 trillion dollar industry.

HYPEBEAST Trade: Mike Cherman of ICNY

Lying in the street, cold, bloodied and alone, Mike Cherman had the inkling of an idea. Insert a roll of reflective material and he had the concept for a brand. Born out of necessity, ICNY is Mike’s retort to the self-posited question “how could I have avoided being hit by that car?” An avid commuter cyclist, Mike’s premise for ICNY was to create stylish and functional clothing that would keep him visible when riding at night. His visibility is on the rise. Following a successful concept collection, Mike recently released his spring/summer lookbook and continues to add retail accounts seemingly daily. We recently caught up with the 23-year-old creative director at his literally frigid Brooklyn studio to discuss design dreams and why he dropped out of art school. Read on for the interview and check out ICNY online.

The San Francisco Guide to Menswear

Something is happening in San Francisco. Bars in the Mission, ones like Zeitgeist with their expansive selection of local drafts and welcoming backyards, are swarming with sharply dressed men, embodying a new era for menswear in the city that brought us decades of iconic looks.

These are no longer the bearded hippies of the Haight, nor are they the mustached machos of the Castro. The new San Francisco man is quirky in his Warby Parker glasses, selvedge denim, and a rugged quilted vest. He smells of musk and drinks local craft brews. This isn’t a new phenomenon in major American cities, but it is interesting to see the momentum of quality boutiques catering to the men of Google, Apple, and Facebook, who have invaded the city, creating a menswear destination that rivals Tokyo or New York. After chasing this zeitgeist, we compiled some of the best shops in the Bay Area.

Nicola Formichetti Officially Launches #Dieseltribute VIDEO

Nicola Formichetti recently assumed the reins of Italian lifestyle label Diesel as their first-ever artistic director. His efforts have been largely to provide a reboot to the 35-year-old label via his groundbreaking vision. While his true injection of creativity won’t come until his first full-scale collection in Fall/Winter 2014, his initial efforts are seen through the launch of the #DIESELTRIBUTE capsule that revisits some of Diesel’s most iconic and classic designs. In true Formichetti fashion, the entire creative behind #DIESELTRIBUTE was shot on an iPhone together with various apps to help create an entirely digital campaign that continues to push the boundaries of communication in fashion. Different platforms such as Tumblr and Instagram each enjoy their own materials that play to their respective advantages while Formichetti utilizes another eclectic series of models found through his worldly travels. NEIGHBORHOOD x Dice Magazine Preview VIDEO

Cars, tattoos and chicks play the stage for the 6 minute preview video for Dice Magazine‘s upcoming collaboration with NEIGHBORHOOD. Set to the soundtrack of the aptly chosen Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the video paints a movie-esque picture of a sun-setting scene in the middle of Americana and follows a brief narrative of taunting lust and rivaling egos. The video hints at the collaboration at hand with cameos of the joint-effort’s branded varsity jacket seen throughout, and sets the tone for the official release to come. With efforts like this put into play early for the project, we can look forward to something good from the pairing come its launch. For now, enjoy the short above.

BRIGHT Tradeshow 2013: Brixton 2014 Spring/Summer Preview

This summer, Berlin’s BRIGHT Tradeshow saw SoCal label Brixton showcase a range of its upcoming headwear releases for the Spring/Summer 2014 season. A departure from this summer’s drops, next year’s collection eschews bright and colorful florals in favor of a workwear aesthetic that includes chambray and corduroy construction, leather branding patches, suede brims, and even the appearance of a rain camo-adorned trucker cap. The highlighted designs also include the likes of a classic top hat whose timeless shape and construction are juxtaposed with a bold turquoise colorway. Look for these and more to be available directly from Brixton’s own web store in the early months of 2014.

Supreme Is Suing Married To The Mob for $10 Million

Supreme founder James Jebbia is suing Married To The Mob for $10 million over trademark infringement. In 2004 Married To The Mob launched their 'Supreme Bitch' t-shirt, which featured an appropriation of Supreme's logo to act as a comment on a male-dominated streetwear subculture. "'Supreme Bitch' is one design of many; one slogan of many. And the use of the design has always been to make fun of the misogynistic vibe of Supreme and the boys who wear it,"
