Charlotte Gainsbourg on Sex, Suffering, and Becoming a ‘Nymphomaniac’

“Perhaps the only difference between me and other people is that I’ve always demanded more of the sunset, more spectacular colors when the sun hit the horizon. That is perhaps my only sin,” says Joe in Lars von Trier’s sexual odyssey-cum-character study Nymphomaniac. It’s an admission shared by the film’s leading woman—a self-proclaimed nymphomaniac played with quiet brilliance by Charlotte Gainsbourg—but one powerfully echoes Trier’s own sentiments, as he once again utilizes the women of his films as a conduit for his own psychological inclinations and expression.

Stacy Martin Talks About Sex in Lars von Trier’s New Film "Nymphomaniac"

Landing a role in the most infamous movie of the past decade—Lars von Trier’s four-hour epic, Nymphomaniac—isn't a bad way to start your acting career. In her screen debut, 22-year-old British model Stacy Martin spends the majority of her time groaning, moaning, and doing weird things with a set square. Dark, depressing, and funny all at the same time, it follows the often brutal sexcapades of a woman (played by both Martin and Charlotte Gainsbourg) from birth to the age of 50.

I met Stacy in Soho, London, where we drank free coffee and spoke about sex addiction, porn doubles, and the awkwardness of shooting sex scenes with Shia LaBeouf.

Nymphomaniac Appetizer - Chapter 1: The Complete Angler VIDEO

Lars von Trier, who has refrained from doing press following his 2011 Cannes gaffe, has been teasing his latest work, the two-part sexual epic "Nymphomaniac," with a lot of ingredients: a sly poster, a mysterious website, and four tantalizing clips.

"Nymphomaniac" opens in Denmark on Christmas Day. U.S. distributor Magnolia has yet to announce a stateside release date.

Gainsbourg’s "Beginnings" VIDEO

The inner workings of an artist’s creative process are an endless source of intrigue. That’s why filmmaker Chiara Clemente launched a series of episodes last fall, entitled Beginnings, exploring early inspirations for iconic artists like Yoko Ono, Mario Sorrenti, and Carolina Herrera. Clemente, who notes that her love of art can be traced to her childhood tiptoeing around her father’s paintings, is back with the next installation of the Sundance Channel series, the first of which airs tonight. This time around, the subjects include shoemaker Christian Louboutin, perfume editor Frédéric Malle, photojournalist Benno Graziani, and actress-slash-singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. Style.com got the exclusive first glimpse at the Gainsbourg episode, in which she talks about her early interest in acting and singing, inspired largely by her parents, Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. “The first attraction to becoming an actress wasn’t really acting. It was more to do with the film crew, the set, being a child in that atmosphere. It’s like the perfect holiday,” says Gainsbourg, who recently starred in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. “Apparently, my mother says that she knew I wanted to become an actress.

Listen: ‘Paradisco’ by Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck - Video

Do you like Charlotte Gainsbourg? Do you like Beck? Of course you do! So stop staring at the clock and make your afternoon go faster by listening to this new collaborative track between the two excellent artist

‘Paradisco’ is the latest track available for listening from Gainsbourg’s upcoming LP of live and unreleased material Stage Whisper, due out on December 13. It’s both written and produced by Beck, and also features drum programming from Cole M.G.N. — best known for playing guitar with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti and Tweeting things like “Playing these $50g guitars is making my hands sweat…” The song is a fantastic blend of Gainsbourg’s ethereal brand of electro pop and Beck’s vintage–y aesthetic and, without the latter’s normally apocalyptic outlook or the former’s referencing to MRI scans, it is very suitable for a weekday afternoon. For something more visually stimulating, watch this cray cray video for 2009 Gainsbourg/Beck collab ‘Heaven Can Wait’ — featuring a dinosaur in a bathtub, Spongebob costumes and skateboards resting on cheeseburgers:
