Peter Schlesinger's Photography Brings You Into the '70s World of Andy Warhol and Grace Coddington

Peter Schlesinger has always been behind the scenes, snapping candid moments of his close friends who were, more often than not, famous celebrities and artists. The photographer has inadvertently produced one of the fashion and art world’s finest portraits after spending time with friends like Anna Wintour, Manolo Blahnik, Cecil Beaton, Kathy Huberland, Reto Guntli, Dom Hamilton, Rex Reed, Anna Piaggi, Amanda Lear, Laura Faber, Tina Chow, Fran Lebowitz and of course partner Eric Boman in cities like London, Paris and New York throughout the ’70s.

The California-born photographer fell in love with the art scene when he moved to London with his lover David Hockney in the late ’60s. Scenes like Robert Mapplethorpe on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, Grace Coddington at a café in Paris, or Andy Warhol in the backseat of a taxi were all but an average day in Schlesinger’s world where the glitz and glamour of stars were shed among intimate circles.

Take a look at some of Schlesinger’s work in the gallery above, which are featured in his book A Photographic Memory 1968-1989. You can purchase Peter Schlesinger’s book online for $50 USD.

'635' by Willy Vanderperre Features His Entire Instagram in Book Form

Known for his hard-hitting style, Dutch fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre has just partnered with IDEA Books to release a photo book of his works as filtered through the square crop of Instagram. The book is titled 635 to reflect the total number of photos on his Instagram profile which has been featured in its entirety, three photos per page across 220 pages. Much like the fast-paced social media platform it pays homage to, 635 was also edited, designed and printed in a mere 10 days. “I thought it was incredibly modern, and so now, a perfect reflection of our time,” Vanderperre said to AnOther. I found the whole experience very liberating and fun, because there was absolutely no time to scrutinize over the placement of images, or adjust things, and go back and forth to the printers. It was all highly spontaneous. I hope everyone likes it as much as I do.” With only 300 copies produced, buy one here for £45 GBP (approximately $69 USD).

Robert Clayton Documents Post-Industrial Ruin of Britain in "Estate"

British photographer Robert Clayton has unveiled a collection of photographs from 1991 entitled Estate. Prompted by the re-election of a Conservative government in Britain earlier this month, Clayton delved into his archives and discovered an array of shots of a council estate in Birmingham, decimated by Margaret Thatcher’s government during the early 1990s. Estate exhibits a Britain in flux, a working class community struggling to make ends meet and a polarized society that Clayton expects to return. Speaking to iD Magazine, Clayton himself admitted that he had only recently realized the poignancy of the work from early on in his career. Estate is a book available to pre-order from Stay Free Publishing and forms an exhibition at  LA Noble Gallery this month.

Beauty of Abandoned Architecture in Aurélien Villette's 'Spirit of Place'

Photographer Aurélien Villette has a knack for finding immense beauty in decrepit, abandoned buildings. The French shooter has been traveling the globe in search of empty palaces, churches and other pieces of architecture, compiling his captures into a compelling series entitled “Spirit of Place.” Although many could imagine the sad truths hidden in these images, we find the spaces where man’s creations have been left unkempt — allowing Mother Nature to work her magic.

Villette’s unique works are now available in a hardback book courtesy of teNeues for $75.

The Instant Wall Art Book "Share"

Fifty international artists come together in the pages of this brilliant book entitled “Share,” for reasons that will soon become clear. Each artist puts together a piece of art, the art is printed on the pages of the book, tearable marks are added to the pages, and voila. It’s a book “That Isn’t For You”, but to be read and shared with others, allowing the pages to be torn from the spine one at a time, ready for display. The clever creators behind the concept? New Heroes and Pioneers, a Scandinavian book publisher and curator team. With work described as “insightful, witty, thought-provoking, reflective and diverse;” as far as the artists go, well, they’re mostly unknown and unpublished. Not for long. Pick up the book now.

Louise Bourgeois - Ode à L’oubli (2002)

The first installment of MoMA’s new online project Louise Bourgeois: The Complete Prints & Books includes Bourgeois’s fabric book Ode à l’oubli. In 2002, at the beginning of her 90th decade, Bourgeois constructed the book’s linen binding and pages out of 60-year-old, monogrammed hand towels from her 1938 wedding. Then, working from one page to the next for six months, Bourgeois cut, arranged, and stitched her own used clothing and textiles to form 32 fabric collages. Fragmented and reconfigured, these personal artifacts conspire to be remembered as forgotten.

Hedi Slimane - Sonic

Featuring fifteen years’ worth of photography from Slimane’s archives, the book documents the designer’s connection with music scenes from London to New York, and acts as a kind of year-by-year reference book to his men’s and womenswear collections, so intertwined with the musical underground and its legends. And because every bible needs an altar, the book coincides with an exhibition at La Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, showcasing selected works from the book.

An Intimate Look Inside The Lithuanian Disco Scene

From 2000–2010 Andrew Miksys photographed youth in village clubs along the back roads of Lithuania. Most of the venues Miksys explored are located in Soviet-era Houses of Culture where he sometimes found gas masks, Lenin paintings and other discarded remnants of the Soviet Union. As a Lithuanian-American from Seattle, he was intrigued by the history of the discos and the teenage culture in these European post-war communities. The images portray a new hopeful generation in a swirl of uncertainty, fog, and disco lights.
