So, going back and looking at this screenshot for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. (Please note that this was a screenshot that was released long before Dark Moon was released.) This shows Luigi fighting some golden ghosts that are shaped like Greenies in the Secret Mine. However, the only golden ghosts shaped like Greenies in Dark Moon were the Golden Greenies (repetition of a word is fun!)

The Golden Greenies were used to replace the Speedy Spirits from the first game. Judging by this early screenshot, however,  It seems to show that the Golden Greenies weren’t originally intended to replace the Speedy Spirits. But were just gonna be normal ghosts that would attack Luigi.

Crazy, huh?

Hate to be a downer, but this screenshot actually is an event that made it into the final game. There's a hockey puck hidden in the snow bank and if you shoot it into the goal net 2 gold greenies appear for a ghostly game of hockey equipped with goalie masks and hockey sticks.

So this is actually not a beta screenshot, although to the development of the Greenie's originally being gold... that's anyone's guess.
