Headcanon :: Size Matters
Groot rather enjoys being small.
He is aware that he is a greater asset to his team (his branches) when he is of considerable size, especially if it allows him to take the brunt of an enemies onslaught. And for that, he will always choose growth.
But exceptional size comes at a cost. The weight of his mass slows Groot down, makes it harder for his atrophies vocal chords to create sounds like words other than the most familiar. Even his joints become less supple, hardened and stiff, as if petrified like the great trees on earth. Daily life can be… tiring.
Ah, but when he is small, Groot is as a sapling, flexible and filled with the vigor of new life. The world is a different place, but no less amazing. Even his teammates become more accessible to the Flora Colossus, once he is conveniently sized for their comfort and attention. Groot can’t help but appreciate the doting he receives.
So… as he often tells Rocket, there is truly nothing so wrong with being small. It all depends on the perspective.
