We're sharing a case from our recently completed exhibit: Ansam/Together: Building a Haitian History Collection at the University of Miami, for #LibraryWonderland "The current exhibit on Haiti is the result of an ongoing collaboration or “tèt ansam” of librarians, community leaders, activists, faculty, and students who endeavor to preserve the Haitian cultural heritage. The method of collaborative work or “konbit” is an inherent component of Haitian communities and has been the curatorial approach to documenting the Haitian experience through rare books, manuscripts, oral histories, and University of Miami archival collections that are available for research, study and creative inspiration. The cooperative spirit of “tèt ansam” is woven within the themes of the independence story of the first black republic that abolished slavery in 1804 by overcoming tribal, linguistic and cultural differences of the enslaved people from the African continent who were forcefully transplanted to the “new world”. -Beatrice Skokan, Head of Manuscripts & Archives Management, Curator of Caribbean Collections _______________________________ #SpecialCollections #LibrariesOfInstagram #Haiti #HaitianHistory #RareBook #Exhibits https://ift.tt/2RUL1au
We checked our schedule and realized it’s time for another Pan Am post! Some of you may be shocked to learn that “back in the day” Pan Am kept extensive timetables like this one that kept track of all of its flights and destinations. So if you wanted to book that holiday trip to Florida, there was no internet and no convenient website to keep track of it all for you. Want to learn more? We now have hundreds of these timetables digitized and they’re all available for you to peruse in our Pan Am digital collection, which you can find on UML’s website. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we have digitized over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. Check back regularly as we take to the skies with Pan Am. #fabflyingFriday #UMLdigitalexhibits #PanAmericanAirways #PanAmonInstagram #timetables #stayingonschedule #panamnhprc https://ift.tt/2BWb4bx
Veteran’s Day is right around the corner, so we wanted to share this amazing photo with you that we found in our Pan American World Airways records. This was the sixth graduating class of Army Air Corps cadets who enrolled in Pan Am’s aerial navigation course here at the University of Miami in 1941. The graduates included 81 U.S. pilots as well as 10 from Britain’s R.A.F. (Royal Air Force), which represented a 95% completion rate, reflecting the talent and experience of Pan Am’s instructors. Pan Am trained thousands of personnel to aid the war effort and over 200 employees’ lives were lost. As we honor our veterans this weekend, we encourage you to read more about Pan Am’s role in WWII and other military operations by visiting our new digital exhibit page “Valiant Ventures”, which we’ve posted to our Cleared to Land site. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we have digitized over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. Check back regularly as we take to the skies with Pan Am. #fabflyingFriday #UMLdigitalexhibits #PanAmericanAirways #PanAmonInstagram #VeteransDay #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #iglibraries #ig_libraries https://ift.tt/2RNiKCm
It's Friday afternoon and we are trying to clean up for the weekend, but we don't want to leave you hanging, so it's nice when we have our Digital Projects Librarian on the line for a #PanAm post Pan American Airways ushered in the Jet Age in 1958 with its new fleet of jet propelled aircraft and revolutionized commercial aviation. Pan Am was eager to demonstrate just how quick its service was by competing with a local laundromat in Denmark where dry cleaning was apparently slow back in 1961 and could take more than 48 hours to get it done. Here, a shirt was flown from Copenhagen to New York City, dry cleaned and flown back to Denmark in a record 41 hours & 50 minutes! Even Amazon would be hard-pressed to compete with that. Read more about Pan Am’s impressive feats of aviation in our new digital exhibit “A Legacy Aloft”, which you can find on our Cleared to Land site. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we have digitized over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. Check back regularly as we take to the skies with Pan Am. _____________________________ #fabflyingFriday #UMLdigitalexhibits #PanAmericanAirways #PanAmonInstagram #SpecialCollections #LibrariesOfInstagram #drycleaning https://ift.tt/2qb2RcO
It was the gold stamped elephant skull that caught our eye, something about the lighting in the stacks hit just right to grab our attention for week 3 of #SpineTingling created by @pemlibrary. "Proboscidea. : A monograph of the discovery, evolution, migration and extinction of the mastodonts and elephants of the world" by Henry Fairfield Osborn, 1936-1942. This challenge has been a blast so far. Keep em coming! _________________________________ #LibrariesOfInstagram #SpecialCollections #Bookstagram #RareBooks #Elephants #iglibraries #ig_libraries https://ift.tt/2Cp8pIl
It's week 2 in the #SpineTingling challenge that we are sponsoring with @pemlibrary for October. You may not be too surprised to learn that we have quite of a few books about pirates in the Caribbean. A phrase that we still manage to say with a straight face, four years on. These particular pirate books caught our attention for the skull and crossbones anchor and for the vibrant white call numbers. These are always a reminder of library days gone by and denote books move from our general stacks or another library's. We'll admit that floating call numbers in photo do give the chills 😱. Hope the LC call number system doesn't haunt our dreams... ____________________________ #SpecialCollections #LibrariesOfInstagram #bookstagram #pirates #PiratesOfTheCaribbean #IgLibraries #ig_libraries #rarebooks https://ift.tt/2QFW71W
Did you know Pan American Airways did more than just fly planes? They also played a key role in helping America get into space. Pan Am’s Guided Missile Range Division, later renamed the Aerospace Services Division, was Cape Canaveral’s primary contractor to service the base from its inception in the 1950’s well into the 1980’s. We found this cool photo in our new digital collection showing a Pan Am fire truck on the Atlas launch pad in July 1959. No wonder Pan Am made an appearance in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey! You can read more about GMRD’s role in the Space Race by reading our new digital exhibit “Valiant Ventures”. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we are digitizing over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. It’s perhaps no coincidence that “Poltergeists ; an introduction and examination followed by chosen instances” by Sacheverell Sitwell, 1940 has appeared in several of the first #SpineTingling posts for the October challenge created by our brilliant and spooky friends @pemlibrary. @hornbakelibrary @pittarchives glad we’re all sharing the same haunting. Our Poltergeist comes courtesy of Jackie Gleason, who amassed a library of titles related to the occult and paranormal. More of his books are visible in the background and will be seen throughout the month. __________________________________ #JackieGleason #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #ghosts #poltergeist #TheyreHere #publishersbinding https://ift.tt/2P8stlN
Perhaps this would've been better suited for a #MorbidMonday post, what with all the poison talk at the end of a cookbook...but it works nicely as #TuesdayTips. Whether you keep your rat poison a bit too close to your baking ingredients, or you mixed up your chemistry set ingredients, it's always good to know how to counteract poisonings. We won't make any claims to these antidotes working; maybe @scihistoryorg has some thoughts?. Thankfully "Pilot Lights Cookbook" complied by the Pilot Club of Miami, 1956 has many tasty recipes from club members. ____________________________ #Cookbooks #Poisons #Antidotes #Recipes #PilotClub #SpecialCollections #LibrariesOfInstagram #Bookstagram #RareBooks #CulinaryHistory #IgLibraries #Ig_Libraries #PortOfMiami https://ift.tt/2zt7CEo
Missing our Pan Am posts? So did we! Our staff has been busy sprucing up the library’s Cleared to Land site and we’ve designed some new exhibit pages we think you’ll really like. We’ve already posted one exhibit page called “Welcome Aboard: A Look at Service in the Stratosphere”. Stay tuned as we serve you up even more content! With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we are digitizing over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. We're so excited to announce #SpineTingling, a new @iglibraries challenge that we're sponsoring in October with @pemlibrary! Every Wednesday of the month, we're challenging libraries to show off their most spectacular, intricate, and weird book spines, as well as skeleton/spine images, and any other spine-related riffs. We hope you'll join us in highlighting that part of the book that entices us to take it off the shelf & have a peruse! Hint: the last Wednesday falls on Halloween, so keep an eye out for spooky spines! #WednesdayChallenge #bookspines #iglibraries #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #rarebooks #iglibraries #ig_libraries https://ift.tt/2x1iHdi
Coming off of Labor Day, our friends @utsaspeccoll @transportationlibrary @laborarchiveswa have issued the #nohiddenlabor challenge for September to highlight and celebrate all aspects of US and International labor. Our first share comes from the Pan American World Airways Inc. collection (ASM0341) from "In Focus: A Briefing for all Management" January 29, 1985. Pan Am and the Transportation Workers Union (TWU) were involved in negotiations over raises and ensuring that Pan Am honored previous agreements for pay raises. TWU called a strike on February 28, immediately after the cooling off period expired. The strike lasted through Mach 1985. _______________________________ #laborhistory #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #PanAm #PanAMNHPRC #strike #TWU #iglibraries #ig_libraries https://ift.tt/2NQMb4H
