I think the reason tumblr gives off the vibe of being “more” embarrassing is because older websites like dA, FFN, and LJ didn’t have a strong capacity for sharing content. Your squee-filled dA journals about how much you hated your math teacher had an audience only of people who followed you or stumbled across your page, and could not be injected onto feeds of people who don’t know you.

God knows there are plenty of old forum posts by me full of rude, ignorant, immature statements floating around out there but because they are on old low-traffic sites without tagging systems I think the only way they have the potential to be dredged up is if I ever decide to run for a public office.

Not to mention that old, cringey shit on LJ and FF.net and dA had a much smaller chance of being screenshotted and made viral by whatever Buzzfeed intern happens to be browsing a tag on their lunch break.

when was the Great Tumblr Blackout? i know i’d been here for some time before then

i tried googling "tumblr blackout" but all i got was hashtag blackout (which is rad), but googling "the great tumblr blackout" returned this article from december 2010, which, yeah. (i joined in november 2008 right after obama won.)

I just dreamed I was in a spy thriller with barack obama.

2008 proto tumblr called, i couldn't find this at first bc i didn't tag it, a lot of old shit on my blog is untagged but searchable now thst tumblr finally has an okay search function. (yourblog slash search slash words)

i joined tumblr in november of 2008 so actually all my bush blogging was when he was already on his way out.

i wish i had written more of this dream dowm but tbh i can never remember my dreams long enough to write much down.

Tumblr’s lack of moderation has gotten so bad that those who have a stance even slightly opposing the hivemind’s are apparently deserving of the hate, death threats, and doxxing sent their way. The people on Tumblr are so dead-set on their views that they refuse to even see the opposite side, demanding people not follow them if they have x political views and refusing to even speak with those who do. There’s no voice saying “hey maybe that’s not a good idea” because most people are scared into staying silent about it. There’s no moderating force, and that lack of one causes Tumblr to grab at increasingly more disgusting and radical things until their platform is an unhealthily extreme one. 

There’s no debating happening here. There’s no exchange of views. There aren’t even real conversations, just mindless agreeing between two people about the same points repeated nonstop throughout the day. Words lose their meaning. The opinionated get buzzwords thrown at them. Those who aren’t in certain groups are told they’re valueless. Tumblr is just a screamspace, a place to be coddled and a place to grow egotistical. There is no “science” or “reason” behind much of what Tumblr says, it’s just spoken because others are bound to agree with the same point stated in a slightly more extreme way and so few will question it. On this website, fame is everything, the self is everything, and a disregard (if not hatred) for others is encouraged. 

That’s the problem with this website.

Having friends on tumblr is really great. I often refer to you guys in real life as “my friend from england/australia/california/new york” and it makes people think I’m very well traveled when really I’ve just spent a lot of time on the Internet.
